Description

Letters Patent No, 113,569, dated April 11, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS.
The sehedule referred to in these. Letters Patent: and making part of the same.
I, J osnrn A. Ronnms, of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in MedicalOompounds, which I call Gasoic Medicated Cocoa-Butter, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention, which I term gasoic medicated cocoa-butter, is to provide a suitable vehicle..for administering aeriform remedial agents in the form of suppositories, &c.; and
It consists of cocoa-butter suitably impregnated with medicinal gases, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Cocoa-butter, or the butter made Irom cocoa-milk and oil, when impregnated with remedial agents, is very useful in the treatment of diseases of any of the passages of the physical organization which can be reached from without, as the ear, nose, throat, reotum, 85c.
There are several methods of medicating the butter, but the best and most effectual way is by what I call the gasoic process, as follows:
The medicine is distilled and converted into a gas; the gas is then infused through the cocoa-butter in a heated state; after which the impregnated butter can be run into any convenient shape for use as supposi tories or othei wise ,7
The advantage of cocoa-butter in thisconnection is that it melts so quickly that when applied through any passage diseased the medicinal effect is at once felt and the remedy acts directly upon the diseased part.
The advantage of special or local application in many cases, piles for instance, is clearly understood; and as this vehicle, cocoa-butter, can-be impregnated with the medicinal gas of any remedy, its application is general.
This method of administering a remedy is easy,
while the effect of the remedy is immediate, as no time or power of the remedial agent is lost bypassing through the slow process of digestion.
Hypnotics are readily given in this manner with excellent results. Local inflammation, strictures, piles, sore throat, all diseases of the bowels, andall' affections where local application from external passages can be made, are readily and efiectively treated with this new agentgasoic medicated cocoa-butter.
