DAVID CRAWFORD, or ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
SWING.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID CRAWFORD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at primary object of the invention is the provision of a swing specially constructed, whereby the swing may be moved in an oscillatory or swinging movement by a person seated therein.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a swing as specified which has a hinged foot tread, which foot tread is connected to a lever and carried bythe swing, and the lever is in turn connected .to a part of the suspending rope or chain of the swing, so that when the foot tread is moved in an oscillatory manner, the lever arm will be operated for moving the suspending cables or chains, thereby imparting an oscillatory movement to the swing.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved swing, Fig. 2 is a front view of the swing, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation of a portion of the swing.
eferring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the swing body as an entirety, which is composed of a base or plat form 2 having the vertically upstanding front supports 3 and 4: secured thereto, and the vertically extending back supports 5. A seat 6 is positioned within the swing, and extendstransversely therein, as is ordinary in the construction of swings of this nature, and a back 7 is pivotally connected to the seat 6, and is held in various adjusted inclined positions, to accommodate the con- Specification of Letters Patent.

venience of the person seated in the swing, by bars 8, which extend alongthe sides of the swing and to which the back is adjustably connected by means of bolts or the like which are inserted through any one of the openings 9, which are formed in the bars 8.
The forward end of the foot board or platform 2 has a foot treadle 1O hingedly connected thereto as is shown at 11. The foot treadle 10 extends across the width of the swing and has cables or chains 12 secured to its opposite ends adjacent its free marginal edge as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The chains or cables 12 pass. upwardly from the foot treadle and over pulleys 14, which pulleys are supportedby the sides of the swing, and the cables extend transversely across the swing, having their terminal ends secured to eyelets 15, which are formed upon the upper terminal ends of levers 16. The levers 16 are swivelly connected at their lower terminal ends, to blocks 17, which blocks are formed upon the swing construction, and the levers are movable in an arch about their swiveled connections. The levers 16 have eyelets 18 secured to their rear sides intermediate of the ends, to which the swing suspending cables or chains 19 are connected.
The front or forward end of the swing is pendently supported by the swing supporting cables 20, which are secured to the sides of the swings in any suitable manner as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
In the operation of the improved swing: a person seated upon the seat 6 of the swing, moves the foot treadle 10, in an oscillatory manner, pressing downwardly upon the foot treadle which downward pressure thereupon will draw the cables or chains 12 downwardly, and forwardly, rocking the lever 16 and moving it forwardly, which in turn rocks the swing suspending cables 19, causing them to impart a swinging movement to the swing 1. When the foot treadle has been compressed to the limit of its downward movement, the quick upward movement of the feet therefrom, or
,the relieving of the pressure from the foot ,mentum of the swing may be increased until the desired speed ofiswinging motion is obtained. c c r In reduclng the lnventlon to practice, certainfmlnor featuresof construction, comb nation and arrangement of parts may neand back secured to said base platform, a transversely extendingseat supported within said sides, flexible cables for swingably suspending said swing structure, a foot treadle. hingedly connected to the forward In a swing structure, a swing comprising a'base platform, vertically extending sides.
