Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 191 5.
Application filedApril 11, 1914. Serial No. 831,331.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ARTHUR A. Sonnlunoirnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of llorwoo l, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning Pipes of Corrosive Sediments and the like.
Th. invention relates to devices for facilitating the cleaning of water pipes and more particularly coils, and manifolds of all corrosive sediments, etc, without dismantling the pipes, coils, or manifolds, and, if an automatic heater is used, without dismantling the heater.
In localities wher hard water is used the water pipes often become clogged due to corrosion or precipitation caused by the ingredients of the hard water. This is particularly true when water is heated,espec1ally in the well known form of automatic heaters.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for permanent installment in one of the pipes of the water heater, which, after the heater or receptacle containing the water to be heated is drained'of all Water, can be filled with acid such as hydrochloric acid or the like, and thereby feed same into the pipe of the heater or receptacle, after which the water pressure may be gradually turned on to force the acid or other agents through the pipe, thereby cleaning them of sediments, or corrosive substances.
Another object of this invention is to provide device of the character described which is constructed so as to form an air cushion to counteract any hammering in the pipes due to the sudden shutting off of the Flow of water therethrough.
The invention consists in constructing and installing a substantially l. shaped tank or receptacle, which is adapted to receive a pipe at the top and bottom of the horizontal portion, the vertical portion having an inlet at the top thereof, and the walls of the entire device tapering toward the outlet pipe forming a natural drain for the contents of said receptacle, through one one of the pipes connected thereto.
In the accompanying sheet of drawing which serves to illustrate my invention and which shows a preferred construction: Figure 1 shows myrimproved device connected to the vertical supply pipe of an automatic water heater. Fig. .2 is an elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section taken through my improved device.
Referring more particularly to the draw- 1 illustrates an automatic water heater .nd 2 the inlet or supply pipe thereof, and the outlet pipe. ll lounted in the supply 2 provide my improved cleaning apparatus which consists of the L shaped casing 5 having a vertical portion 6 and a horizontal portion 7. At the top of the vertical portion 6 T provide a removable plu 8.
The pipe 2 is divided at its point of connection with the improved cleaning device 4-, and is connected to the horizontal portion '7 indicated at 9 and 10.
lit will be noted that the pipe 10 forms a thorough drain for the receptacle which is necessary in this device in order to insure to the user that no poisonous acid has been allowed'to remain in the tanlr. The inner \valls'of tie receptacle r are all shaped so as l to cause the contents of the receptacle to flow toward the outlet 10.
This device is intended for permanent installment and can be brought into use at any time desired.
The operation of the cleaning of the pipes is substantially as follows: The water pressure is first turned off, and then the valve 15 which is in the supply pipe for the heater is opened and the pipes in the heater are thoroughly drained. The valve 15 is then closed and the plug 8 removed from the vertical portion or neck 6 of the device. The receptacle 4 is then filled with hydrochloric acid. This acid runs down through the pipe I 2r p I x r 1,135,058
