To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Generating Patterns, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to the generation of patterns, and is of special utility when embodied in mechanism for use in conjunction with the type of pattern generator illustrated in my copending application Serial No. M5567, although I contemplate the use of my improvements in any field for which they are adapted by their nature.
In the pattern generator above referred to, a pattern blank, preferably in the form of a disk, is operated upon by suitable means, such as a cutter, the movements of the latter being controlled by suitable means, such as a follower, engaged movably with a model which is carried along a gage, so that the relative movements between the gage and followercaused by variations in edge the contour of the regions of the model engaged respectively by the gage and follower are communicated to the cutter through its connections with the follower, and the cutter cuts more or less deeply into the periphery of the disk accordingly, the disk and gage being preferably rotated positively at a given ratio of speed so that the model is fed positively, along the gage in synchronism With the rotation of the disk, but not necessarily at the same peripheral speed.
An important object of my present invention is to provide an edge or device to SGIXQ, as a model to be engaged with the followerin the above pattern generator. this taking the place of the sample or model shoe illustrated in my said application, my improved model edge having parts which may represent respectively such model parts as the upper of a model shoe and the edge of the sole thereof, these parts being preferably adjustable so that they can be set in correspondence with the width of avprojecting soleof any desired character, and it is to be understood that this edge device n ray represent a model other than a shoe, the latter being selected by way of example of one use to which my improved edge may be put.
Another important object of my invention is to provide means to feed my improved edge device automatically in operative engagement with the rotary gage and. with the follower of such a machine as the pattern generator referred to above so that the cutter will produce upon the periphery of the pattern blank disk the same contour as if the operator had turned by hand a model shoe in engagement with the gage and follower, and in connection with said feeding means I preferably provide automatic devices to stop the edge at the end of its path of operative movement, and means to per- .mit the manual return of the edge to its pofer to provide a series of movable blocks, v
adjustable independently of each other across the direction of relative movement between the edge device, whatever its shape, and the follower or member by which the variations of the engaged model region are transmitted to the cutter or other means operating upon the disk or other pattern. I prefer to use an edge device extended along a substantially straight axis, and to arrange blocks transversely with respect to this axis, means being provided to secure these blocks in the position to which they are adjusted by the aforesaid contact with the model and where a model shoe is used, I may provide the edge with a face to serve as a gage or track along which the edge of the sole/of the model shoe may be turned, while the upper of the model shoe engages, and automatically sets, the blocks, the latter being arranged to project over the gage-face into position to contact with the upper successively. The forward face of the edge device, i. that part of it which is to contact with the rotary feeder of the pattern generator may be provided with a rack having teeth to mesh with teeth upon the rotary 110 i gage or feeder, and this rack represents the sole edge of the model shoe, while the upper of the model shoe is represented by the noses or ends of the blodks opposite the ends thereof which contabt' with the upper of the model shoe during the setting operation, the blocks being preferably of uniform length where a straight edge device is used, to permit this action.
The various features of my invention will be illustrated and described fully-in the'accompanying drawings and specification, and pointed out in the claims.

In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and description to permit ready and complete understanding of my improvements, the part designated by the reference numeral 1 is a rotary cutter mounted on a shaft 2 carried by a swinging lever 4 supported pivotally at 5 upon a frame 7 which may be secured by the lugs 8 upon a suitable base (not shown), a belt 9 running over pulleys 10 and 11 serving to rotate a driving pulley 12 mounted loosely upon the vertical pivot stud 5, while a belt 13 transmits power to a pulley 14 upon the shaft 2 for the purpose of actuating the pattern generating cutter or operating means 1.

and 17 is a follower device carried by an arm 24 of the lever 4, and the parts above numbered in this paragraph may; and preferably will, correspond in general construction and operation with the parts similarly numbered and described in my aforesaid application Serial No. 415,567, or they may be of other construction suitable to cooperate with my improved edge device now to be deerribed.
, In accordance with my invention I provide an edge device of any suitable contour, construction and material, one convenient form 'of this edge device being illustrated at 19, which designates a substantially straight member, preferably made of metal,
provided with a series of blocks arranged transversely of the longitudinal axis of the edge device 19, and in accordance with one feature of my invention the forward edge or face 18'of the device is preferably provided with a rack the teeth of which are present ed in position to mesh with the teeth upon the periphery 'of the-rotary feeder member or pinion 26 of the pattern generator proper, this feeder or pinion being preferably driven positively, as is the part similarly numbered in my application 415,567, by a gear 39 on the shaft 41 carrying the feeder, the gear 89 being in mesh with a gear 42 which is driven by a gear 44 on the vertical shaft (hidden below screw 30 in Fig. 1) which carries the blank support 171 and which serves as a means to rotate the pattern blank disk 16. To accomplish this rotation of the disk 16 and feeder 26, any suitable means may be provided, and in the instance illus trated I have shown a countershaft 31' driven by a spiral gear in engagement with a worm 34 fixed to the pulley 12, the countershaft having a sleeve 35 provided a with a worm 36 in engagement with a gear 37 arranged to actuate the vertical shaft which carries the blank support 171, preferably'substantially in the manner illus trated, and described in any application 415,567. The sleeve 35 may be loose upon the shaft '31 and may have an extension provided with a choking brake 51, so that when the sleeve 35 is not actuated positively the brake will bring it quickly to rest, together with the disk 16 and feeder 26.
Positive actuation of the sleeve 35 may be accomplished in any suitable way and as one form of device for thispurpose I have shown a clutch member 52 mounted upon and to rotate with the shaft 31, and having a clutch projection 56 to enter a recess 57 in the sleeve 35 The clutch member 52 has also a groove 53 to -receive the finger 54 of a shipper lever 55 mounted pivotally at 58 uponthe frame 7, and by which the clutch 52 may be thrown into, and out of, en-
gagement with the sleeve 35. The shipper 55 may be provided, in accordance with one feature of my invention, with a stop pin 155 to be engaged by a coiiperating adjustable stop pin 119 (see Fig. 2) upon one end of the edge member 19, so that when the operative traversal of the edge device 19 past the pinion 26 and follower 17 has been completed, the stop pin 119 will automatically trip the lever 55, throw out the clutch member 52, and the choking brake 51 will bring the pattern blank disk 16 and rotary feeder gage 26 to rest. The operator may then swing the lever 4 toward the right and turn into place, as shown in Fig. 1, the dog 64, the latter being mounted upon a vertical pivbt 66 in the frame 7, and serving when in such amass? position to engage the shoulder 67 upon the lever 4c holding the lever with the cutter 1 well out of engagement with'the disk 16, against the action of a spring 21 secured to the frame at 22, and to the lever 4 at 23, which spring serves normally to draw the lever 4 and cutter 1 toward the disk 16. The dog 64 is provided with a seconda surface 68 which -may lee-engaged wit the shoulder 67, and when so engaged will hold the lever 4 with the cutter 1 in position to shape to a uniform radius'the periphery of the member 16,'thi's being used, after the pattern portion of the disks periphery has been cut, to bring the limb or inopera-. tive portion oft-he disk to a circular shape.
When the pattern is being generated during the traversal of the edge device 19, the dog 61 is out of engagement with shoulder 67, being turned approximately 90 from the position shown'in Fig. 1, in full lines, into the position shown in dotted lines, when the lever 4 will occupy the position shown in dotted lines bringing the shoe 17 into engagement with the pattern edge, and the cutter 1 into engagement with the pattern blank disk 16.
As already indicated, the rack face 18 of the edge device 19 represents the sole-edge of the model shoe, and the neighboring ends of the blocks 20 represent in the aggregate, the upper of the model shoe, the varying distance between the edge 18 and blocks 20 being a resultant of the curved edge of the sole and the differently curved upper of the model shoe, in correspondence with which curves, the blocks '20 have been set. These blocks may be of any suitable construction,
and may be set in any suitable manner, as
by measuring the width of the projecting sole of a model shoe at any point and adjusting the'corresponding block 20 so that its distance from the rack face 18 will be the same as that of the width of the projecting sole-edge at the point selected. To aid the operator in setting the blocks properlv, scale points can be provided on a suitable part of the edge device, such-as the points numbered 1 to-26 inclusive upon the strip 194. These points correspond to similar stop points for controlling the sole trimming mechanism in the machine in which the pattern is finally to be used. I prefer however, in accordance with a valuable feature of my invention, to provide for setting the blocks 20 by direct contact with the desired model region which the blocks are to represent, and as one convenient construction of the blocks for this purpose, I have shown them as of uniform length, greater in height than in width, and as having,

prevents escape of the blocks 20 upward.
Each block may have also'a downwardly projecting peg 199 preferably to prevent its accidental lateral displacement from the member 19.
The forward ends or noses 200 of the blocks 20 may be supported so that they project beyond the face 191 of the member 19 sufiiciently to be engaged with the upper of amodel shoe, when the sole-edge of the model shoe is turned along the face 191 as a gage or track, and to facilitate this accurate turning movement, Without permitting slipping of the sole edge, the face 191 may be roughened as indicated in Fig. 2. A plate 192 may also be provided to serve as a separator and prevent the blocks 20 from catching upon the upper surface of the Soleedge, which is usually serrated, and thereby preventing it from turning freely.
Any suitable ineans may be provided to secure the blocks 20 in adjusted position, and as one form of device for this purpose I have shown a thumb screw 198 passing through the block 190 into engagement with the endmost block 20 and serving when driven home to compress the blocks 20 and separators 196 in series against the block 190 at the other end of the edge device.

I n accordance with still another feature of my invention, provision is made for the manual or other return of the edge device 19 to its extreme right hand position ready for operative traversal, and any suitable mechanism may be provided for this purpose, one suitable. and convenient device or means being shown as a turntable 70 mounted pivotally at 170 upon the base 7, this turntable having an under cut groove with overhanging lips 72 to receive ,the cooperating part 71 of the member 19, permitting the latter to move freely in a longitudinal direction, but restraining its lateral and ver- By swinging the member 70 awayfrom the pinion or feeder 26, the rack face 18 of the member 19 will be carried out of feeding engagement, and the edge device 19 may be pushed by hand rightward to the'position shown in the drawmgs.
I prefer to provide suitable means to hold the rack 18 normally in positive engagement with the feeder or pinion 26, for which purpose any suitable means may be adopted, and as one convenient form of such means I have shown in Fig. 3 a pin 77 screwed into the member through an aperture in the frame 7 and having a catch sleeve 74 normally pressed upward by a spring 76, so that the sleeve enters the aperture 75 and holds the parts in'the position indicated in -l ig. 3, thesleeve being formed to have a snug lit in the aperture 75.
To release the rack face 18 of the member 19 from the pinion 26, the sleeve 71 may be pulled downward by means of its head 78,
and swung outward to carry the parts into the dotted line position of Fig. 3, the aperture 75 having an enlarged portion 79 to receive the sleeve 71 and permit this swinging movement, which disengages the rack 18 from the pinion 26, and the members will remain in the dotted line position (being held there by the spring 7 3) until the member 70 is pushed toward the pinion 26, when the spring 76 will automatically reseat the sleeve 71 in the aperture 7 5, and the rack 18 will be engaged with the pinion 26 ready for operation.
' To prepare the pattern blank for operation a disk 16 of suitable material, preferably wood, is secured upon the support 171 by any suitable means, such as those described and illustrated fully in my application 115,567, and which need not be described, in detail herein, it being suliicient to say that after the blank support 171 has been revolved to its starting position, determined by the stop 95 entering the recess 97 in said support, the disk 16 with its hub 83 is shipped over the end of the post 80,. being positioned by the spline 17 6, and thereafter the washer 88 is put in place slidingly, its slot 89 receiving a reduced portion of the post 30, the head of the latter being formed as a binding screw. Then the wings 91 are pressed downward in the post slot 93 into position shown in Fig. 1 and may be turned with the screw head of the post 30 to force the screw head against the washer to secure the blank in position.
In operation, the parts being in the position indicated in Fig. 1, the shipping lever 55 is moved toward the right, throwing the clutch 52 into engagement with the sleeve 35, the belt 9 having been first started to set the cutter 1 into rotation, and then the dog is turned at substantially the same time that the shipper 55 is thrown, with the result that the follower 17 moves over into engagement with the blocks 20 at the left hand end of the edge device and the cutter.
1 enters into cutting relation with the periphery of the disk 16 at about the same time that the shaft 31, actuated by the spiral gear 33 and worm 31 u pon the main driving shaft 5 causes the clutch member 52 to turn 17 moves forward and backward as controlled bythe blocks 20 which are carried past it and the cutter 1 as controlled by the follower 17 cuts into the periphery of the blank 16.
The cutting operation continues until the required length of pattern surface has been cut and thereupon the stop 119 which has been preliminarily adjusted engages with the stop 155 and throws the lever 55, disengaging the clutch 52 from the sleeve 35,
whereupon the brake 51 brings the sleeve to rest and thus stops rotation of the pattern blank disk 16 and the rotary feeder 26. The operator will preferably then move the dog 64: into its intermediate position with the shoulder 68 in engagement with the shoulder 67, leaving the cutter in an intermediate posltion of engagement with the disk 16, and
bythrowing the shipper lever 55 the disk is caused to rotate until the remainder of its periphery has been shaped to a circle. As soon as the entire periphery of the disk has been thus finished, or such portion thereof has been treated as desired, the dog 6%; may
be turned at approximately right angles to its previous position sothat its short face now engages shoulder 67, which will hold thev lever {1 and cutter 1 entirely out of engagement with the disk 16, the parts being now once more in the position illus .;ed in Fig. 1. The disk 16 may now be moved for use in a sole-rounding machine or Wherever desired, the wings 91 and washers 88 being manipulated for that purpose. The edge device 19 may be left with the blocks 20 arranged as shown, to operate upon a fresh pattern-blank disk 16, or the blocks 20 may be reset to correspond with a model of different contour.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. An attachment for pattern-generating machines; said attachment comprising an elongated supporting member having means to secure said attachment to a patterngen'- crating machine; a series of adjustable edgeblocks; a removable retaining cap having graduations marked adjacent to said blocks to facilitate adjustment thereof; and a retaining member to hold said blocks in adand arranged for limited transverse movement relatively to said supporting member and retaining cap.
2. An attachment for pattern-generating mechanism; said attachment comprising a holder having an attaching pivot; a slide carried by said holder; and a plurality of transversely movable parts carried by said slide and movable bodily therewith relatively to said holder; said parts presenting adjacent ends respectively for engagement with the model, and opposite ends constituting a composite abutment for engagement of the follower of the pattern-generating mechanism to which said attachment may be applied.
3. An attachment for pattern-generating mechanism comprising edge-blocks having rounded noses; a support therefor with a roughened face; and a guide strip between said face andblocks; saidparts serving to aid the operator in turning the shoe-soleand upper, or other model, in engagement with said blocks, to set the latter.
An attachment for pattern-generating mechanism comprising a holder having a member tobe pivoted upon the frame of pat. -s,-rn-generating mechanism, and provided with a spring-controlled stop to fasten the holder in adjusted position; a slideway upon said holder; a longitudinally extended support on said .slideway; and. a variable edge device'carried by said support.
5. An attachment for pattern-generating mechanism comprising a supporting'member having a groove; transversely movable edge blocks, and distance or separator blocks, movable in said groove; a retaining member operating to crowd said edge blocks and separator blocks laterally against an .end piece;
and other retaining members extending into said groove to prevent longitudinal dis placement of said edge blocks, and a removable retaining cap to hold said retaining blocks and edge blocks adjustably in assembled relation.
