SIGNALING DEVICE.
My invention relates more particularly to devices of the character referred to in which air pressure isused for operating the sound producing device such asa wind horn. l
' in devices of the I character described where used on automobiles, motor boats or like conveyances a large bulb is usually provided to supply the air current for operating the device, gutthere are certain disadvantages inthe use of such a bulb due to its comparatively large size and inconvenience 5 be any desired source.
of manipulation. Furthermore, devices of this character are usually capable of producing but a single sound or tone which it is apparent may not suit the various occasions. inwhich such a warning s gnal is to be em ployed. 1
a In the present intention I provide simple means for controlling such adevice to secure various degrees ofactuation thereof. For a better understanding of'rny invention reference may. be had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 illustrates diagrammatically an application-or my invention and-Fig. 2 illustrates a detailed construction of a valve device for controlling, the passage of air through the horn.
In practising my invention-l preferably" provide a horn or hell 1 connected to a source of air 2, by the conducting tubes 3- 41 5. The air pressure may be supplied'by any means, but I preferably connect a chamher 2 to a pump G-through the medium of a conducting pipe 7 having a check valve 8 interposed. The pump ,6 may be operated in any desirable manner and Ihave shown it conneqtedto the shaft 9 of an automobile engine, although it apparent that the source of power for opera Specification of Letters Patent.
the'pressure exceed a predetermined amount, or any of the'well known regulating means to prevent excessive pressure in air chamber 2 may be employed. I have shown means for maintaining substantially a constant pressure in air chamber 2 comprising preferably a piston 12' and spring 13 so adjusted that the pressure in tank 2 remains substantially constant as will be apparent.
For sound producing devices I preferably employ a pair of reeds1-l-l5 constructed in a'well known manner and adapted to produce a sound through bell or horn 1 when the air pressure is relieved by the opening of valves 16-17 respectively. To control said valves 16-17 I provide electromagnets 1819 having armatures 20-21 respectively 1 and operatively connected with said valves 16-47 respectively, two types of magnets. on the one signaling device being shown for the sake of convenience and simplification.

Application filed April 15, 1912. Serial No. 690,972. 2
Any source or" current may be used for oper-- 15;
ating these magnets and I have shown a battery 22 connected incircuit with said magnets and controllingkeys 232 4. Magnet 19 is so arranged that when energizing circuit is closed through its wind n it maintains its armature 21 attracted an valve 17 opened, while. magnet 18 isso arranged that it will automatically vibrate its armature, this being brought about by means of the interrupter? contacts 20 which open each time magnet 18 is energized. In other wordswhen a direct current circuit 18 closed through magnet 18, due to. the interrupter 20' it will automatically vibrate its armature in a well lrn'own manner, thus "operating valve 16 r'ad'causing an intermittent opera tion of reed 14E.
Although I have chosen to illustrate my invention with two different operating types of magnets 18.'19, I contemplate using various combinations thereof andas is apparent willreadily suggest themselves.-
For controlling the magnets 18-19, keys 23= -24}are provided, each key being adapted for diiierent control of the magnets and causing a variable operation of the signaling horn. For instance with key 23 depressed to close contacts 25 and 26, magnet is enei lzed open v lve M 2 i 1,134,2oe'
circuit to open valve 16 and allow the operation of reed L1, thereby producing a different tone in born 1' as I preferably arrange the two reeds to chord. It is apparent that either one or the other of said magnets may be cut out of circuit by means of switches 2829 so that a single tone may be produced if desired.
Now by means of' switch 24 a difierent operation of the horn will be secured as will be apparent from the following; For in-. stance'if key 24 is depressed to close contact.
springs 30-431 but not far enough to interrupt normal contact 31, a circuit through magnet 19 is closed, causing an operation of reed 15 vand-producing a distinctive tone,
and upon further depression of key '24, nora bly illustrated'the valve 16 and its c'on- I trolling mechanism and using like reference characters to indlcate like parts.
pair of magnet spools is constructed to cause a. comparatively slow operation of armature 20. and to this end I provide copper sleeves 33 for the cores of the electromagnets, thereby causing the magnet to'retain its armature for. a short period after-the circuit through its winding is internuptedp Although I have disclosed certain applications oi my invention it is apparent that many 1 changes and modifications thereof may be made, also various ways of'connect ing the magnets and controlling keys in circuit will be apparent, and therefore I do not desire to be limited to the exact structure as disclosed but aim-to cover all those changes and modifications-as come within the spirit and scope of the appendedclaims.
lVliat I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a signaling device of the class de scribed the combination with a sound pro- E1ectro-' magnet 18 which comprises preferably a ducingwind horn, of air ducts and a source of air pressure connected therewith, electromagnetic controlling means for; each of said air ducts, and a manually operable switch ing lever and suitable connections for operating one or bothof said electromagnetic controlling means to produce different sounds from said horn. v
2. In a signjalingdevice of the class described the combination with a. sound pro ducing wind horn, of air ducts and a source of air pressure connected therewith, electromagnetic controlling means for each of sald air ducts, a manually operable switching lever having different degrees of actuation and suitable connections whereby one or more of said electromagnetic controlling means are operated and whereby difierent sounds may be produced by said horn.
3. In a signaling device'ofthe class described, the combination with a sound producing wind horn, of air ducts and a source of air pressure connected therewith, a valve in each of'said ducts,electro1nagnetic controlling means for each of sa d valves, a
manually operable switchinglever having (liflerent degreesof actuation whereby one means are operated and whereby different sounds may be produced by said horn.
4. Ina signaling device of the class described. thecombination with a sound producing wind horn, of air ducts and a source of air pressure connected thereuitlra valve in each of said ducts, electromagnetic controlling means for each of said valves, a manually operable switchinglever having different operating positions and suitable connections whereby when said lever is in one position one of said electromagnetic controlling means is operated and when said lever is moved to another of its operating positions another of said electromagnetic control.ling'means is operated, each of said controlling means being adapted to produce a different sound by said horn.
