T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IVEN L. HAINES, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Guyahoga Falls, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction-Clutches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clutches, and especially to that type employing friction jaws which grip a rotary member for the purpose of driving another rotary member, such as a pulley or the like.
The object of the invention is to improve the general construction and arrangement of such clutches. More particularly to provide an improved positive fulcrum adjustment for the levers which operate the jaws. Also to improve the construction of the jaw and the manner of mounting the same on the pulley. Also to provide an improved safetyhand wheel device for operating the clutch. Also to make a well-balanced clutch, in which the friction on each jaw will be equalized, and in which the parts when assembled are conveniently supported, and are readily accessible.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the clutch. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the pulley and spider. Fig. 1 is a plan of the adjusting ring. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are details of one of the fulcrum blocks. Fig. 8 is a side View of one of the jaws, and Fig. 9 is a section thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a shaft or other driving member on which is mounted a friction wheel 7 the hub 8 of which is extended on one side and sleeved over the shaft, to which it is fastened by a key or otherwise. The hub 9 of the pulley 10 is mounted on the sleeve, with an interposed bushing 11 for wear, and this bushing may be perforated for oil or grease.
The spider arms or members 12. which connect the pulley hub and rim, are grooved lengthwise as indicated at 13 to form guides for the long double ribs lt on the back of the webs 15 which are integral with the segmental jaws 16, which are retained in position on the spider by bolts 17 which are slidable in slots 18 in the spider, so that the jaws are movable-radially to engage or disengage the clutch.
The jaws are connected by cross pins 20 to levers 21, which extend crosswise through openings in the spider arms and are fulcrumed on blocks 22 (see Figs. 5, 6 and 7,) slidably mounted in recesses 80 in the spider arms on the side opposite to the shoes, and said blocks are capable of slight radial movement for adjustment, being retained by bolts 23 which extend through openings 81 in spider arms.
Each fulcrum block has a projection or shoulder 24 arranged to fit against a positively acting adjusting ring 25 which is seated in a circular seat 26 formed in the arms of the spider. The inner edge of said adjusting ring is provided with a series of cam surfaces 27 which bear on the shoulders 2a of the fulcrum blocks, the cams corresponding in number to that of the blocks, and the ring may be turned to adjust the fulcrum blocks in or out, to properly position the levers with respect to the gripping jaws and the friction wheel. The ring has camgrooves 62 into which project bosses 61 on the fulcrum blocks 22 for positively adjusting the fulcrum blocks either way, when the ring is turned. The movement of the ring is effected by a pinion 28 which is attached to the spider by a bolt 29 and which may be turned by a wrench applied to the projecting hub 30, which is held by the bolt and to which the pinion is fixed the pinion engaging teeth 31 on the adjusting ring.
The inner ends or projections of the fulcrum blocks fit in sockets 32 formed in the lever arms 21, and said ends have trunnions 63 on opposite sides thereof which extend into grooves 64: in the side walls of the sockets Springs 33, bearing against the pulley hub and seated in sockets 3a in the lever arms, serve to reduce or prevent vibration of the lever arms.
The outer ends of the levers are connected by pivoted links 35 to a sleeve 36 which is sleeved over a stud 37 fastened by bolts 38 to the end of the sleeve 8, said stud being concentric with the shaft. The sleeve 36 may be shifted on the stud 37 by a hand wheel 39 which is held on the sleeve 36 between the shoulder a0 and a ring 41, and the hub of this hand wheel is provided at its inner end with a guard disk 42 which pro- 'ect-s outwardly beyond the lever connections and so prevents the hand of the operator being struck by the rotating parts. It will be understood that the sleeve 36 rotates freely in the hub of the hand wheel, but may be shifted axially to throw the clutch in or out. 'When shifted outwardly, the links draw the outer ends of the levers inwardly, and the centrifugal force acts to lift the shoes 16 from the friction wheel 7 and so release the clutch. When the hand wheel is shifted inwardly, the levers draw the shoes inwardly to contact with the friction wheel, and the adjustment of the fulcrum blocks is such that the'shoes will grip the wheel when the links 35 are in or just beyond the center line so that the shoes are locked in contact. By turning the ring 25 the fulcrum blocks may be nicely adjusted to .give an effective grip. The whole pulley is supported on the hub 8 of the friction wheel, giving a large,
and wide bearing. The jaws 16 are prefergrip the wheel, fulcrum blocks adjustab'ly mounted on said member an adjusting ring mountedon said member and operatively engaging said blocks, levers bearing on said blocks'and connected to the jaws, and means to operate said levers.

The combination of a rotary friction wheel, a'rotary member, radially movable jaws mounted on saidmember, fulcrum blocks adjustable radially on said member, an adjusting ring mounted on said member and having cam surfaces-jbearing against "said fulcrum blocks, means to turn the ring, and operating levers bearing on said blocks and connected to the jaws.
'3. The combination of a rotary friction wheel, another wheel having spider arms provided with radial guides on one side thereof, axially projecting jaws slidable radiallyin said guides and arranged to grip the rim of the friction wheel, levers fulcrumed in said arms and extending across through openings in said arms and connected at one end to the jaws on oneside of the arms, and operating devices connected to the opposite ends of the levers on the other side of the arms.

The combination of a rotary friction wheel, a rotary member having spider arms with openings therethrough, jaws slidable on one side of the arms and projecting outwardly and axially therefrom to grip the exterior of the friction wheel,'levers extending through "said openings and connected at their inner ends to said jaws, said levers having sockets on the outer sides thereof,

The combination of a rotary friction wheel, a rotary member, radially movable jaws mounted on said member and movable inwardly to grip said wheel, leversj connected to the inner end of'said jaws and having sockets with grooves in the sides thereof, adjustable fulcrum blocks on said member outside of the levers and, projecting into said sockets and having trunnions en= gaging in said grooves, means to adjust said fulcrum blocks, and operating devices connected to the levers. r r
