- My invention relates to improvements in dental jig pol-ishers adapted to be employed by dentists in the oper-ation of polishing and cleaning a persons teeth in the treatment of pyorrhea, and the object of my improvement is to provide a p'olisher which shall embody simple and mechanical devices for converting rotary motion into reciprocatory motion, and which shall be so constructed that all of the working parts thereof shall be completely inclosed whereby such working parts shall be protected from dirt and dust and be effectively prevented from engaging with exterior objects.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, W. LEE HUNTER, citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Camdi/iovements for Jig-Polishers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dental jig pol-ishers adapted to be employed by dentists in the oper-ation of polishing and cleaning a persons teeth in the treatment of pyorrhea, and the object of my improvement is to provide a p'olisher which shall embody simple and eficient mechanical devices for converting rotary motion into reciprocatory motion, and which shall be so constructed that all of the working parts thereof shall be completely inclosed whereby such working parts shall be protected from dirt and dust and be effectively prevented from engaging with exterior objects. l accomplish this 0bject by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of a dentists j ig polisher embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation of a detail of the same; Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of another detail of the same, and Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of another detail of the same.

T1stud 13 will be caused to move in the cam provided with an outwardly projecting stud 14; that is adapted to move in a longitudinal straight slot 15 provided in an end piece 16 thus to prevent the shaft 11 from turning, the stud 1li being short enough to permit the end piece 16 to be screwed into the end of the casing 5 whereby all of the working parts of the device shall be completely inclosed within such casing 5 thus making a neat and compact instrument and one wherein there are no movable parts exposed to the touch of the person using such instrument. When the shaft 7 is rotated it rotates the enlarged portion 9 of such shaft and causes the stud 13 to move in the cam slot 12`which cam slot may be of a required shape to cause a reciprocating motion throughout a desired distance to be transmitted to the shaft 11, such shaft 11 sliding within the end piece 16 while the stud 141 moves within the slot 15 to prevent the shaft 11 from turning.
Obviously, various kinds of tools, not shown, may be attached to the outer end of the shaft 11 in a well known manner.
What 1 claim is:
1n a dental jig polisher of the class described, the combination with a casing of tubular form which is provided in its cen-y tral portion with a perforated partition that is adapted to serve as a shaft-bearing and further provided on one of its ends w1th a'n internal screw-threaded portion, of a shaftbearing member provided on one of its ends with a longitudinal slot through its wall and with an external screw-thread to adapt it to screw within the internal screw-threaded end portion of said casing; a tool-holding shaft movably disposed to extend through said shaft-bearing member concentricailly with said casing andk provided on its inner end with a cam slot extendin around its periphery and further provide with a stud which projects from its periphery into said longitudinal 'slot to prevent said shaft from rotating while permitting itV to move end- Wise; a rotatable shaft disposed within said said perforated partition to project from the 7 whereby when the shaft 7 is rotated the other end of said casing, the inner end of 1 said rotatable shaft being provided with an st named v rg p 1,134,041' i shaft; and means forcornmunicating rotary 10V motion to said rotatable shaft.
