Description

anca sara SAMUEL E. oUasoNs, or 'BUrrfALofNEW YORK.
Letters Patent Nc. 113,404, dated April 4,1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-SPRINKLING- MACHINES.
The Schedule referred` to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
l, SAMUEL E. CURsoNs, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Street- Sprinkling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is lto prevent the wetting of cross-walks as the machine passes over them. Heretofore the water containedin the perforated discharge-pipe and the pipes leading thereto from the tank would continue to discharge through the perforations after til-valve was closed, and thus wet the cross-walks. My invention is designed to remedy this defect.
The invention consists First, in the Acombination and arrangement, with the perforated discharge-pipe ,of a. street-sprinkling machine, of a waste-pipe provided with a stop-cock leading from the discharge-pipe forward, so as to conduct and vdischarge the water contained in the pipes after the tank-valve is closed across and forward of the cross-walk. l
Second, in the combination, with the cock of the waste-pipe and the lever `which actnates the main valve in lthe tank; of connecting-rods arn nged in such a manuel' that the waste-cock will be opened by the same movement of the lever that closes the main `valve, and lvice versa.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure I is an elevation ofthe rear end of astreetsprinkling machine.-
Figure II is a plan view thereof.y
Like letters designate like parts in each of the gnres.
A is the tank.
B, the discharge-pipe.
l), the branches thereof leading to the perforated sprinkling-pipe C.
D is the exterior trough attached to the latter, and provided with discharge-.pipes d df E is the hand-lever actuatingthe discharge-valve located inthe tank.
All of these parts are old and well known.
F is the waste-pipe, connected to the perforated pipe C, and preferably provided with'branches f. It runs forwardly under the tank, and is of such length that when the perforated sprinkling-pipe is near one side of a cross-walk the nozzle of the waste-pipe will project beyond the Vother side ofthe same in` front.
G is a stop-cock arranged in the waste-pipe.v
It is operated by means of a spindle, H, arm I, and connecting-rod K attached to the lever E actuating the discharge-valve of the machine.
These parts are so arranged that when. the main v valve is closed the waste-cock G is opened, and vice versa.
The perforated sprinkling-pipe is preferably constructed with an internal depressed portion or trough,
c, to which the branches of the waste-pipe `are connected. v y
The opcration'of my improvements is as follows:
The machine being about to move over a crosswalk, the main discharge-valve is shut by the operator and the waste-cock opened at the same time. The water contained in the perforated pipe and branches leading thereto, nding an outlet through the waste-pipe, ceasesr to discharge through the perforations of the sprinklingpipe,'and is carried by the waste-pipe over the crosslwalk and discharged beyond the same, thereby enabling the latter to be kept dry. I claim as myinvention* 1. The combination and arrangement, with the perforateddis'charge-pipe of a street-sprinkling machine, of the Ywaste-pipe F provided with a cock, G. substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. llhe combination, with the hand-lever E and cock G of the .waste-pipe, of the spindle H, arm li, and conmeeting-rod K, substantially as and .for the purpose SAML. E. GURSONS.l
Vheretofore set forth.
Witnesses:
EDWARD WILHELM, JN0. J. BONNER.
