Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 25, 1914. Serial No. 853,098.
. improvements in pruning knives, and has for its principal object to provide a knife which is particularly adapted for use on trees and similar plants wherein the bark is apt to become affected.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective knife in which a plurality of tools is combined, thus avoiding the necessity of the possesser having a number of tools.
A further object of the invention is to provide a knife in which the blade is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal thus avoiding the necessity of welding or otherwise attaching the several different portions of the knife together.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the knife constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 from the opposite side, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the handle portion of the knife comprising the usual gripping members 2 and 3, which are riveted or otherwise secured to the handle portion of the blade 4 as at 5.
Formed integral with the handle portion of the blade is the blade portion designated generally by the numeral 6 which comprises the main body portion 7 having formed thereon the lateral extension 8. This blade is sharpened on both edges as at 9 and the lateral extension is also sharpened on its inner edge as at 10. -An angular extension 11 is formed at the free terminal of the blade, and said. angular extension is provided with the sharpened edges 12 and 13 which are arranged to cooperate when the device is in use.
It will be apparent from the foregoing I that in use the curved portion of the knife where the angular extension 11 joins the blade 7, may be used as a gouge in order that the user may determine whether or not a tree is in need of treatment. The straight edge 13 is used to scrape the wood after the bark has been removed when a tree is in need of treatment and the point formed where the edges 12 and 13 meet is to remove the bark and also to scrape the under parts of the roots of the tree when the same is affected. The hook-shaped extension 8 is particularly adapted for use in trimming and cutting off of small limbs and also to reach in the crotch between limbs to permit the user to scrape the wood to remove any disease.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that an exceedingly useful tool is provided which will eliminate the necessity of using or having in the users possession a number of tools, and also a simple and compact device is provided.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A pruning knife including a handle, a blade secured to. the handle, said blade being sharpened on both edges, an angular extension at the free end of the blade, the free form a means whereby limbs may be cut end of the angular extension being inclined from a tree. 10
and sharpened, the angular extension and In testimony whereof I affix my signablade forming a gouge, and a lateral proture in resence of two witnesses;
5- jection formed near the free end of the PHEUS BUELL ROBBINS. blade, said lateral projection being provided Witnesses: with a sharpened edge arranged to coincide 'LEAMAN T. Rename,
with the sharpened edge of the blade to MARYH. ROBBINS.
