Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Venn J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in trusses. V The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved truss in which the hernia engaging part proper is substantially rigid and the edges of the body of the truss are suiiiciently rigid to-withstand the stresses to which they are commonly subjected, but yield under unusual stresses thereby making the truss very comfortable for the wearer. Second, to provide an improved truss in which the body of the truss pad adapted to yield to unusual stresses and at the same time has the advantages of a rigid or unyielding truss pad.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices-and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a front view of a double truss embodying the features of my invention. Fig. II is a rear view of one of the truss pads. Fig. III is a front view thereof. Fig. IV is an enlarged detailed section on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of Fig. II. Fig. V is an enlarged detailed section on a line corresponding to 5-5 of Fig. II.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the body of my improved truss pad comprises a convex front wall 1 and a convex rear wall 2, the edges of the walls being permanently united. These walls are formed of rubber. The front wall 1 is provided with a thickened portion providing a boss like projection 3 adapted to engage the hernia proper. The
projection 3 is spaced from the edges of the body as shown in Fig. III, it preferably being nearer to one end than the other, the body being oval, the enlargement being at the small end.
The walls of the body are of comparatively soft rubber and are quite thick and owing to the shape of the body, are sufficiently stiff to resist stresses to which they are commonly subjected in use but will yield under unusual stress.
A coiled spring a is disposed in the chamber of the body under tension, the spring being disposed below the enlargement 3. An attaching plate 5 is embodied within the rear wall, the attaching plate having a cen tral nut portion 6 adapted to receive the attaching screw 7. The attaching plate is embedded in an enlargement or inward projection 8 on the rear wall, which projection is embraced by the bottom coil 9 of the spring l and constitutes a support for the spring, preventing its lateral movement within the bottom.
The body is provided with fabric linings 10 which prevent under wear of the spring on the rubber. The body is also provided with a fabric covering 11 which is cemented thereto, giving it a finished attractive appearance and also making it agreeable to the touch and protecting. the rubber. The rear wall has a vent opening 12. The truss pads are secured to a suitable support as 13 by means of an attaching screw 14 which is arranged through the slot 15 in support, a spring washer plate 16 being arranged between the support and the body of the pad, as shown in Figs. IV and V.
I have illustrated and described my improved truss in detail in the form in which I have embodied same in practice and which I have found to be very desirable. I have not attempted to illustrate various modifications or adaptations as I believe that the disclosures made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adopt the same as conditions may render desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A truss comprising a chambered body formed of rubber and having convex front and rear walls, the edges of the walls being permanently united, the front wall having r a thickened portion providing a boss-like ing plate embedded in the rear wall of said body, there being an inward projection on the rear wall in which said plate is embedded, the said inward projection being embraced by the bottom coil of the spring and constituting a support therefor, a support, an attaching screw having threaded engagement with said attaching plate, and a spring washer disposed between said support and the rear wall of the body.
2. A truss comprising a chambered body formed of rubber and having convex front and rear walls, the edges of the walls being permanently united, the front wall having a thickened portion providing a boss like projection, the edges of the projection being substantially spaced from the edges of the body, the edges of the body being sufii ciently stiff to resist stresses to which they are commonly subjected in use, but yielding to unusual stresses, a coiled spring disposed within the body under tension, said spring being located centrally below said enlargementin said front wall, an attaching plate embedded in the rear wall of said body, an attaching screw having threaded engagement with said attaching plate.
