To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN A. Hnss, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful File-Cutting Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful file cutting machine wherein I provide means for holding the cutting tool normally away from the file blank and for immediately returning the same to its normal position after a out has been imparted to the blank.
It further consists of novel means for imparting downward movement to the tool and for immediately elevating the same.
It further consists of novel means for supporting or holding the file blank in position.
It further consists of novel means for imparting rotary motion to the file blank during its passage to the cutting tool.
It further consists of novel means for automatically stopping the feed of the file blank to the cutting tool at the desired time.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at pres ent preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that myinvention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the frame of a file cutting machine, which it will be understood is suitably formed and is supported in any suitable manner, and that the parts are suitably connected or supported thereon, in any suitable manner, and are properly timed to operate with respect to each other. Suitably mounted upon the frame 1. is the main drive'shaft 2, to which motion is imparted in any desired manner. in the present instance said shaft is provided with a fast pulley 3 and a loose pulley 4.
5 designates a belt which is adapted to be suitably positioned with respect to either the fast or the loose pulley, in order to drive the said shaft 2, it being understood that the power is imparted to the said belt 5 from any suitable source or in any suitable manner.
7 6 designates shipping arms which are suitably mounted upon a movable rod 7, which is mounted in suitable bearings 8 on the frame of the machine, and connected with said movable rod 7 is a link 9 which is connected with a lever 10 fulcrumed at 11 to a suitable part of the frame of the machine and which lever, upon its opposite side of the fulcrum, from that to which the link 9 is connected, has secured thereto a rod 12 which is connected with the operating lever 13, which is pivotally mounted or fulcrumed at 14:, at a suitable point on the frame of the machine and which lever extends to a suitable point for ease of access by the operator of the-machine, whereby it will be understood that by moving the said operating lever 13 in one'direction or the other, the shipping arms 6 transfer the belt 5 from the fast to the loose pulley or vice versa.
I 15 designates a shaft which is connected by a universal joint 16 with the drive shaft 2 and which shaft 15 is provided with a gear 17 adapted to mesh with a worm or gear 18 carried on a shaft 19 upon which is suitably mounted, at the proper position,
the cam wheel or wiper 20. The shaft 19 is mounted in suitable relation to and carried by an upright or support 21 which is mounted for vertical movement in suitable guides in the frame 1 and which normally rests in its lowermost position but which is raised by means of a treadle 22, which is in suitable connection with a rod 23, which is suitably secured to the support 21, whereby when the operator depresses the lever 22, the support 21 is elevated through the medium of the rod 23, in order to remove the tool from the work and to insert the file blank and remove the finished file from its holders.
I will now describe the construction for reciprocating the tool for forming the cuts on the file blank.
Adjustably mounted on the support 21 is a head 24: which, as here shown, is provided with segmental slots 25 through which pass the bolts 26 in order to adjustably connect or secure the said head 2 1 to the support 21. The head 24 is provided with suitable shoes or guides 27 for receiving the tool plunger 28, it being understood that said plunger is so mounted in said head that it may be suitably reciprocated and guided in its movement and, as here shown, the said plunger is provided with a lug or tappet 29 which is in suitable position with respect to the cam wheel or wiper 20, on the shaft 19, in order that as the cam is rotated, it will strike and so raise the lug 29 and the tool plunger and will thereafter release the same in order that said tool plunger can move downwardly or be lowered to impart a cut to the file blank. Suitable means is provided for causing said tool plunger to move downward or to be lowered in order that the tool carried thereby may impart a sufficient blow to the file blank, in order to impart the cut thereto, and as here shown, I have provided a suitable spring 30 which, in the present instance, is formed of rubber and which bears against the tool plunger 28 and also against the end of a screw-rod 31, which is in threaded engagement with the extension 32, on the head 24, whereby it will be understood that by rotation of the said screw rod 31, the tension of said spring 30 may be adjusted and by providing a nut 33 on the screw rod 31, I can lock the said rod in its adjusted position and so holdthe spring 30 under the required or desired tension. The action of this spring 30 is such that when the cam or wiper elevates the tool holder and plunger, the said spring 30 is compressed so that when the cam releases the lug 29, the tension of the spring 30 causes a quick downward movement of the plunger, and causes the tool to properly strike the file blank imparting the desired cut thereto.
I have found in practice that in cutting round files or rat-tail files, it is essential that the tool, afterstriking the-file blank, be
immediately removed from the engagement therewith, in order that rotation of the file blank may be permitted, and to this end I have provided means for the quick elevation of the tool plunger and the tool from the blank, immediately after each out. As here shown, this consists of a spring 34, here the adjusting nut 35, and when the spring 30 imparts the downward movement to the tool plunger and tool, the-nut 35 is so positioned that it will descend and suitably compress the spring 34, and as this spring 34 is suitably proportioned with respect to the spring 30, it will not prevent the proper downward movement of the tool but will be compressed by the said nut 35, so that immediately upon the out being imparted to the file blank, the said spring 34:, through its compression, at once elevates the tool plunger 28 and tool suitably out of engagement with the file blank. It will of course be understood that the tensions of the two springs 30 and 34 are adjusted, in order to accomplish this desired result, and in order that the spring 3 1 will normally hold the tool suitably away from the file blank and will immediately return the same to its normal position, after the downward movement, caused by the spring 30, has caused the tool to impart the tool and how I have provided the means for imparting the downward movement to the tool and also the means for elevating the 'tool from the file blank, immediately after each cut.
I will now describe the means or method of feeding the file blank laterally through the machine, in order to be properly positioned with. respect to the cutting tool. Passing around a suitable pulley carried on the power shaft 2 is a belt 37 which passes around a pulley 38, carried by a countershaft 39, on which is a grear 40 which meshes with a gear 41, mounted on a suitable counter-shaft which also carries a gear 2, which is in mesh with a gear 43, carried on the feed rod 14, which latter is mounted in suitable bearings carried by the frame of the machine and in suitable position thereon. It is necessary to provide at acertain time for a slight stoppage of the rotation of the feed rod 14, which can be accomplished in any suitable manner. As here shown, I have loosely mounted the gear 43 thereon and have provided a flange 43 between which and the gear 43 is a leather washer or other suitable device 44 which, While providing a suitable amount of friction between the parts to cause the gear 43 to rotate the rod 44, will provide for a slight dwell or release in the said rod 44, at the proper time, that is to say, the parts just described will properly rotate the rod 44 and cause the carriage 45 to move properly in the machine, but at the same time the tool strikes the file blank to impart a cut thereto, the additional jar will be suflicient to cause cushioning between the leather washer and the gear 43, causing a slight dwell in the rotation of the rod 44. The said rod 44 is screw-threaded for a suitable portion of its extent, and is adapted to be engaged by a movable saddle or engaging member on the carriage 45, the engagement of said threaded portion being accomplished in any suitable or desired manner, and preferably in such a way that the forward movement of the carriage 45, through the machine, will be accomplished by the proper rotation of the rod 44, but by suitable operation of a crank 46, at the proper time, the engaging member carried by the carriage 45, is released from engagement with the threaded portion of the rod 44, so that the parts co acting with said carriage 45 and carried thereby, may be quickly returned to the starting position ready for the next operation. The said carriage 45 carries the file blank holders, one of which as 47, is adapted for engagement with the tang of the file blank, and the other holder 48 being adapted for engagement with the opposite end of the file blank. As here shown, the holder 48 is provided with an opening 49 through which passes the pin 50, the said opening being larger than the said pin which latter is carried by a block 51, adjustably mounted on the arm 52 of the carriage 45, whereby it will be understood that the said block 51 can be moved or adjusted in its position, in order to accommodate various sizes of files.
The end of the holder 48 is movable in an enlarged opening 53, in said block 51, in order that the said holder 48 is permitted to oscillate and revolve in an arc, as the end of the file blank rotates. The opposite holder as 47 consists of a suitable member having a recess for receiving the end of the tang, and is connected by means of a universal joint 54, with the end of a rod 55 movably mounted in suitable bearings and which is suitably connected with the carriage in order to move laterally therewith, said rod 55 being provided with a spiral groove 56, it being understood that a double independent rotary motion is imparted to the rod 55 and so to the tang holder 47, in order to rotate the file blank in its passage throughthe machine, in order that the tool is caused to contact properly with the sides of the file blank and impart the proper cut thereto. The double independent rotary motion is imparted to the rod 55, in any suitable manner, and as here shown I have provided a ratchet or ratchet wheel 57, provided with a spline 58, which is seated in said spiral groove 56, so that as the rod 55 is drawn laterally through the machine, by the movement of the carriage, a slow rotary movement will be imparted to said rod 55, through the medium of the spiral groove 56 and the spline 58. In order to provide the additional or second rotary motion to the said rod 55, I have, in the present instance, provided a plurality of pawls which are adapted for suitable engagement with said ratchet wheel 57, and which as here shown are two in number, one of said pawls, as 59, being mounted on the crank lever 60, which is connected with a crank arm 61, which is in suitable engagement with a disk 62, upon one side of the same, by means of a crank pin 63. The other pawl 64 is situated to engage with the neXt succeeding tooth of the ratchet wheel, with that engaged by the pawl 59, and is likewise mounted upon a crank lever 65 which is in engagement with a crank arm 66, which is connected upon the opposite side of a disk 62, by means of a crank pin 67.
A suitable back-lash pawl 68 is mounted at a proper point to engage with the ratchet wheel 57 to prevent improper or return movement thereof, after being moved forwardly by either of the pawls 59 or 64. The disk 62 is mounted on a shaft 69, mounted in suitable bearings, and which carries a gear which is in mesh with a gear 71, carried by the drive shaft 2, by means of which rotary movement is imparted to the rod or shaft 69, and so to the disk 62 which actuates the crank pins 63 and 67, and as these are opposed to each other by their connection with the disk 62, first one pawl and then the other is properly moved forwardly to rotate the rod 55, while the other pawl is being retracted, that is to say, the pawl 59 being in engagement with a tooth of the ratchet wheel 57 will be moved forward to rotate the rod 55, during which time the pawl 64 is being returned to a position to engage with the next succeeding tooth, whereupon the pawl 64 will be moved forward to rotate the rod 55, while the pawl 59 is being returned to engage the next succeeding tooth. Attention is directed to the fact that the said pawls 59 and 64 are so related with respect to the teeth of the ratchet 57 that when returned to their rearmost position, they are not immediately brought into engagement with a tooth but are moved rearwardly slightly beyond the tooth with which the pawl will finally engage with, so that, as the crank-arm carrying the respective pawl moves forwardly, due to the action of the rotation of the disk 62, there will be a certain space of time until the pawl contacts with the proper tooth, in order to again rotate the shaft 55, or in other words, there is a slight dwell to the shaft during which period, prior to the forward movement of each pawl in the rotation of the rod 55, this being timed with respect to the cut imparted by the tool, that is to say, that as the spring 30 imparts a downward movement to the tool plunger 28 and causes the tool to impart a cut to the file blank, the latter is held stationary and immediately the spring 34: has again elevated the tool from its contact with the file blank, the respective pawl 59 or 6% will be in engagement with the proper tooth on the ratchet 57, to again rotate the rod 55, and so the file blank. From this it will be understood that intermittent rotary movement is imparted to the file blank, the dwell thereof being timed with respect to the time of impact of the cutting tool on the blank.
It will of course be understood that suitable springs are provided for holding the pawls in proper position for engagement with the teeth and returning the same thereto. It will be understood that the rotation of the ratchet wheel will cause the rotation of the rod 55 through the engagement of the spline with the groove 56 in the said rod 55.
It will now be seen that I have described a means for holding the blank in position on the carriage, and I have described a means for advancing or moving the carriage in the machine, and I have also described the means for intermittently rotating the file blank during its passage through the machine, in order that the various parts of the file will be properly located with respect to the tool to receive a cut therefrom.
I have found in practice that it is necessary to provide holders of the character stated for the file blank, since the latter vary quite a little in each blank particularly in the tangs, the ends of which are in different relation to the file blanks, in most instances, and it is necessary to have the universal adjustment of both holders to permit of the proper rotation of the tool on the file blank, while presenting the same properly to the cutting tool. When the file is in the position seen in Fig. 1, it will be understood that V the end of the blank will be suitably held and there will be substantially no motion to the end of the blank in an are but as the carriage moves forwardly carrying the file blank with it, the end of the blank already cut will oscillate or revolve in the arc of a circle, while the said blank is being rotated, and the universal adjustment or movement of the holders permits this action, as will be evident.
A suitable pressure foot 72 is adjustably mounted upon the head 24:, for engagement with the file blank, and in order to hold the same properly in position with respect to the tool between it and the anvil 73, the operation of which will be hereinafter set forth. In order to provide for the automatic stopping of the machine at the proper point when the tang end of the file is ,reached, I have provided a latch 74:, pivotally mounted at a suitable point on the frame of the machine, with respect to the operating lever 13, said latch being provided with a suitable notch 7 5, adapted in the proper position of the lever 13 to receive the same, and said latch having a suitable spring bearing against the same to cause said latch to automatically engage with the said operating lever 13, at the proper time, it being understood that the operating lever 18 must be moved from its position, seen in Figs. 1 and 2, to shift the belt 5 to the fixed or fast pulley, in which position, it will be imderstood that the machine will be in operation, at which time the lever 13 is seated in the notch 7 5 and is held by the latch 74:.
7 6 designates an adjustable stop or release mechanism, carried by the carriage l5, and which is adapted to engage with a suitable part of the said latch 74. when the carriage has been moved forwardly through the machine to 'the proper point, whereupon the said adjustable stop or release 7 6 will remove the latch 74 from engagement with the operating lever 18, whereupon the spring 77 which is in engagement with a suitable part of the lever 10 will pull over the movable rod 7 and with it the shipping arm 6, to cause the belt 5 to be in engagement with the loose pulley 4, and the machine will thus be automatically stopped. It will be understood that the stop or release 76 can be adjusted upon the carriage to the proper position thereon, depending upon the size of the file blank to engage the latch 74 and thus stop the machine at the end of the file blank. I have also mounted a stop 78 on the carriage, which can'be adjustable thereon, and which engages with a suitable portion of the frame of the machine when the carriage is moved rearwardly to a position to again start the cutting. As here shown, this stop 7 8 consists of a bar suitably secured to the carriage 45 and the said stop can be adjusted on the carriage in order that the latter, when re turned by hand, will be brought to the proper position to cause the file to be located properly with respect to the cutting tool ready for the next operation.
The anvil 73 is vertically movable and guided by means of a head 79 which is suitably connected with the plate 80 of the frame of the machine and the end of said anvil rests upon or contacts with the upper face of the anvil support or former 81 and is so positioned thereby and held that the file blank is moved to be properly presented to the cutting tool and with respect to the angle at which the tool is held, whereby it will be understood that the tool will be set at the desired angle and the former 81 will move the anvil to vary the position of the file. As here shown, the said anvil former is provided, at a suitable point, upon its upper face with the upwardly extending or curved portion 82. The said former 81 is suitably connected in any suitable manner with the carriage 45 and held so by means of a screw 83 passing through the plate 84 which plate is connected with the said former 81, whereby it will be understood that said former moves with said carriage and that the different portions of the upper face of the said former are positioned beneath the end of the anvil 73. The said former 81 moves in a suitable recess 85 formed in the bed plate 80 of the frame, so that the said anvil former 81 is suitably guided in its movement and is adapted to suitably support the anvil 7 3.
The upper face of the anvil is provided with a suitable groove or recess 86 which is shaped to receive the file blank 87 and permit the same to move therein, in order that each portion of the said file blank may be properly positioned between the upper face of the said anvil 73 and the presser foot 72 and held therebetween when the cutting tool 88 descends to impart a out. By means of the proper shaping of the upper face of the anvil former 81 the said anvil 7 3 is properly located and positioned, in order to receive the file blank and to present the pointed end thereof in suitable position with the cutting tool and in form of file shown, the anvil is lowered as the pointed end is cut in order that all parts of the file blank are present in the same plane at the cutting tool, whereby the latter may always remain at the same angle and the blank is moved properly.
In the construction shown in the drawings, the former 81 is shaped in order to provide for what is known as a rat-tail file and will properly position the anvil 73 accordingly. By this means it will be understood that the file will always be supported by the anvil at a point where the impact of the cutting tool is received thereon and that the position of the former 81 with respect to the anvil varies depending upon the position of the carriage, in order to raise or lower the said anvil or hold the same in suitable position depending upon the shape or character of the file being cut. In order to prevent improper movement of the rod 55, in its bearings, I have shown a bearing member 89 in suitable position with respect to the said rod 55 and I have provided an adjusting rod 90 one end of which is adapted to contact with the bearing member in order to hold the same always in suitable contact with the rod 55 to hold the same against the bearings 91 therefor.
It will be understood that the bearing member 89 is provided, in order to yieldingly hold the rod 55 in such a manner that, while permitting rotation of the rod 55, when actuated by either of the pawls 59 or 64, the bearing pressure thereof will be sufficient to prevent the further improper forward rotation of the said rod 55, when either of the pawls are started upon their rearward movement. This positively prevents undue rotation of the rod 55 and in consequence provides for the proper positioning of the file blank.
Any suitable construction may be employed in conjunction with the carriage 45 for causing the forward movement of the same due to the rotation of the screw rod 44 and having a suitable releasing member in order to quickly return the said carriage to its rearmost position, and in the drawings I have shown the nut 92 having a suitable thread 93 thereon and which nut is carried by the rod 94 rotatably mounted in said carriage 45 and to which is connected the crank arm 46, it being understood that in the position seen in Fig. 9 the said nut is so situated that the screw threads 93 thereon will be in engagement with the threads of the rod 44 in which case the rotation of the rod 44 will actuate the carriage 45 forwardly in the machine. By the proper operation of the crank arm 46 said nut 92 is retracted in the carriage 45 removing the same from engagement with the threads of the rod 44 so that the said carriage can be quickly returned to starting position, that is, to the left in Fig. 1, ready for the next operation, after which the crank arm 46 is again operated to throw the threads 93 of the nut 92 into engagement with the threads of the rod 44. In the construction disclosed, I have shown the carriage 45 provided with a dove-tailed groove 95 on its face adapted to engage with the dove-tailed lug 96 on the side of the frame 1 of the machine, which groove and lug serve as a support of the carriage and guide therefor in its movement through the machine.
97 designates a tool holder properly carried by the tool plunger which is provided with suitable means for the reception and securing of the tool 88 thereto, said tool holder being connected with the tool plunger 28 by means of a suitable screw or pin 98 in such a manner that by loosening the pin 98 the tool holder 97 .may be so positioned that the tool will be held at a proper angle with respect to the file in one position of the tool holder and may be positioned at an angle of 90 with respect to its former position in order that the top out may be applied to the file blank.
I have found in practice in machines wherein the tool plunger is reciprocated and bears directly against the head 24: and side of the upright or support 21, that there is considerable wear of the parts, which permits a movement of the tool plunger and preventing the exact positioning of the tool to impart the cut in the proper place on the blank, and also by reason of the wear, it is difficult to adjust the tool plunger. I have therefore provided, in the present structure, an improved means for mounting and guiding the tool plunger 24:, which is more clearly disclosed in Fig. 12. As will be seen from said figure, I have provided a gib or guide 99, upon one side of the inner portion of the head 24, which is adapted tobe stationarily secured thereto, and a second gib 100 is mounted within the head upon the opposite side of the same, said gib 100 being free from said head and adapted to be adjusted in its position with respect thereto, by any suitable means, such as a set screw 101. Each of the guiding faces of the gibs 99 and 100 are provided, as here shown, with V-shaped grooves adapted 'to coact with corresponding projections on the tool plunger 28 and the sides of the tool plunger are spaced away from the wall of the upright or support 21 on the opposing side of the head 24. By this means, it will be understood that the said tool plunger 28 will be reciprocated in the proper manner, will always be properly guided in its move ment, and that by reason of the corresponding grooves and recesses in the coacting.
parts, a suitable bearing surface is provided, the only wear therefore which can occur, will be in the coacting faces and this can be quickly taken up by proper adjustment of the set screw 101, the effect of which will be evident.
The operation of the device will be readily apparent.- The parts being in position in Fig. 1, it will berunderstood that the file blank 87 will be suitably positioned in the blank holders 17 and 1-8 and that the end ofthe file blank is resting upon the anvil 73' and held thereagainst by the presser foot 72, the tool 88 having been placed in suitable position to impart an initial cut to the blank. The machine is now started by proper positioning of the operating-leverv or tappet 29 alternately raising the tool.
plunger 28 and releasing the same. By raising of the tool plunger, the spring 30 is compressed, so that when the lug 29 is released the said spring, together with gravity, moves downwardly the tool plunger and the tool imparts a cut to the file blank, while at the same time the spring 34 is compressed, by the downwardly movement of the tool plunger, and tends to immediately raise the tool from its engagement with the file blank. The rod 44 in the meantime is being rotated which causes-the carriage 4:5 to be fed longitudinally with respect to the toolholder and thus causing another portion of the file blank to be presented for a cut. At the same time the rod 69 is being rotated and through the medium of the crank arms 61 and 66 suitable rotary movement is imparted to the rod 55 which carrying the tang holder 17 imparts rotary movement to the file blank. as previously described, it being understood that the'said rod 55 as it moves toward the tool holder will have the additional slow rotary movement imparted thereto through the medium of the groove 56 and spline 58 carried by the ratchet 57. By means of this double rotary movement imparted to the rod 55, it will be understood that it prevents the tool from cutting or forming the teeth parallel line on the file blank, since as the cut is imparted to the blank during the dwell in the time of the operation of the pawls, that as the carriage moves forward, an additional amount of rotary movement is imparted to the file blank, so that the next cut will be slightly to one side or out of'line with the'next succeeding out, and in this way the cuts are in a spiral on the file blank. The adjustable stop 76 carried by the carriage is suitablyv adjusted to the proper position on the carriage depending upon the size of the file blank and at the proper time the said stop contacts with the latch, 74 releasing lever 13 whereupon the spring 77 will move the rod 7 to cause the shipping arms 6 to move the belt to the loose pulley, so that the parts will be automatically stopped. The crank arm 46 is then operated to release the screw threads 93 of the nut 92 of the carriage 15 to release the threads of the rod 4% and the carriage and coacting parts can be immediately returned by hand to starting position which will be automatically determined by the stop 78 car-' The parts will then ried by the carriage. be ready for the next operation.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a file cutting machine which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character stated, a support for the file blank, a tool holder, means for feeding the file blank properly to the cutting tool carried thereby, means for raising and releasing said tool holder, a resilient member of relatively large expansion and compression, a stop against which said member abuts to be compressed when the tool holder is raised, a rebound means comprising a yielding member of relatively short compression and of quick expansion, a support for said rebound means, and means carried by said tool holder to compress said yielding member against its support as the blow is struck and to be immediately elevated by it to lift the tool from the file blank.
2. In a device of the character stated, aholder for a file blank, a tool, means for causing said tool to impart a cut to the file blank, means for feeding the blank laterally in the machine and permitting a dwell in said feeding action, means for imparting a slow rotation to said file blank, and means for imparting an intermittent quick rotation to said file blank.
3. In a device of the character stated, a holder for the file blank, a tool, means for causing said tool to impart a cut to the file blank, means for feeding the blank laterally in the machine and permitting a dwell in said feeding action, a rod adapted to be actuated laterally with said feeding means, and in suitable connection with said holder, means for imparting a slow rotation to said rod when actuated by said feeding means, and means for imparting an intermittent quick rotation to said rod at the proper times.
4. In a device of the character stated, a holder for a file blank, a tool, means for causing said tool to impart a cut to the file blank, means for feeding the blank laterally in the machine and permittinga dwell in said feeding action, a rod in suitable connection with said holder adapted to move laterally with said feeding means, and having a spiral groove therein, means in suitable engagement with said groove for causing a slow rotation of said rod as it moves laterally by said feeding means, and means for imparting an intermittent quick rotation to said rod.
5. In a device of the character stated, a holder for a file blank, a tool, means for causing said tool to impart a cut to the file blank, means for feeding the file blank laterally in the machine and permitting a dwell in said feeding action, a rod adapted to move laterally with said feeding means, and suitably connected with said holder, a spiral groove in said rod, means in suitable engagement with said groove for imparting a slow rotation to said rod when actuated by said feeding means, a ratchet wheel in suitable engagement with said rod, and a plurality of pawls adapted to be actuated to alternately engage with said ratchet at predetermined times to impart a rotation thereto, and to permit a dwell therein, whereby a quick intermittent rotation is imparted to said rod.
6. In a device of the character stated, a holder for a file blank, a tool, means for causing said tool to impart a cut to the file blank, means for feeding the blank laterally in the machine and permitting a dwell in said feeding action, means for imparting a slow rotation to said file blank, a ratchet wheel in suitable engagement With said rod, a plurality of pawls suitably located with respect to said ratchet, and means for actuating said pawls whereby the same alternately engage with said ratchet wheel, to rotate the same and said pawls being mounted in order to permit a dwell in said rotation at predetermined times.

In a device of the character stated, a holder for a file blank, a tool, means for causing said tool to impart a cut to said file blank, means for feeding the blank laterally in the machine and permitting a dwell in said feeding action, means for imparting a slow rotation to said file blank when actuated by said feeding means, a ratchet wheel in suitable connection with said rod, a plurality of pawls in suitable relation with respect to the ratchet wheel and adapted to alternately engage therewith, means for actuating said pawls whereby said ratchet will be intermittently rotated, and means for preventing improper rotation of said rod in the opposite direction.

In a device of the character stated, a holder for a file blank, a tool, means for causing said tool to impart a cut to the file blank, means for feeding the blank laterally in the machine and permitting a dwell in said feeding action, a rod suitably connected with the blank holder and adapted to be actuated by said feeding means, a spiral groove in said rod, means coacting with said spiral groove to impart a slow rotation to said rod, when actuated by said feeding means, a ratchet in suitable connection with said rod, a plurality of pawls in suitable relation with respect to each other and adapted for engagement with the teeth of said ratchet wheel in order to engage alternately with the teeth of said ratchet wheel, means for actuating said pawls to impart an intermittent rotary movement to said ratchet wheel and so to said rod, and a resiliently supported bearing for said rod tions of the face of the blank in the same 4 horizontal plane When positioned to receive the cut.

In a device of the character stated, file blank holders, a tool, means for properly feeding the blank in the machine to present the same to the tool, an anvil adapted to support the different portions of said blank, as they are successively presented to the tool, and a former carried upon a rigid support and slidably actuated for varying theverticalposition of said anvil in order to properly locate the different portions of the faceof the blank, in the same horizontal plane, When positioned to receive the cut.

In a device of the character. stated, file blank holders, a tool, means for properly feeding the blank in the machine to present the same to the tool, an anvil adapted to support the difi'erent portions of said blank, as they are successively presented to the tool, and a pressure foot for suitably holding the file in relation to the said anvil, and means slidably supported on a rigid support for varying the vertical position of said anvil in order to properly locate the diiferent portions of the face of the blank in the same horizontal plane When positioned to receive the cut.
