Description

iii
CYRUS P. EBERSOLE, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA,
ASSIGNQR TO ELECTRIC SERVICE SUPPLIES COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORA- TION 0F PENNSYLVANIA.
CHANG-EABLE SIGN.
Application filed December 14, 1912.
i all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (lyrics P. EBERsoLn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Changeable Si ns, of which the following is a specification.
lviy invention is a changeable sign adapted for general use but it is designed particulariy for use on street or passenger cars to display the names of streets or other points of destination. The improvements arecharacterized by peculiar means comprising a revoluble wheel automatically shifted by the operation of revolving it into position for operating either of two wheels connected to rollers on which the curtain is wound, the roller on which the curtain is winding being positively driven while the other is permitted to revolve in the relation or different rate corresponding to the diameters of the respective rolls thereon. The mechanism is adapted for positively engaging and driving the rollers, alternately, by turninga handie or journaled shaft in opposite directions.
The principles of my improvements, within which various changes may be made, will e more fully understood by reference to the following description and the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is front elevation of a broken sign in which my invention is embodied, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same with a part of the door broken away to show the interior construction, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken longitudinally through the end of the apparatus comprising the actuating mechanism, Fig 4 is a vertical sectional view taken transversely to that shown in Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. t, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of part of the end of the apparatus shown in Fig. 5.
The improvements, in the form thereof illustrated in the drawings, comprises the casing 1 having the sight aperture 2 for viewing the street name or place of destination displayed on the curtain 3 which is carried by the rollers at and 5, the casing having the rear door 6 permitting access to the inclosed mechanism.
The rollers -1 and 5 have the respective spindles 7 and 8, by which they are journaled at one end in the removable yoke 9 Specification of Letters Patent.

carried by the casing, and the respective sockets 10 and 11, by which they are journaled at the other end on the arbors 12 and 13 fixed to the casing.
Gear wheels 14 15 are journaled on the respective arbors 12 and 13 and have fixed thereto the respective curved bearings 16 and 17 containing the apertures 18 and 19. The rollers and 5 have the dished bearings 20 and 21, adapted for engaging the conforming bearings 16 and 17, and the studs or fingers 22 and 23 adapted for engaging the apertures or sockets l8 and 19, whereby the revolution of either wheel 1% or 15 revolves the corresponding roller 4 or 5.
A ear wheel 24-, having the spokes 25, is journaled on an arbor 26 which is movable transversely in the elongated bearing 27 in the end of the casing, whereby this wheel can be moved into engagement with either of the wheels 14 or 15 and out of engagement with the other.
A toothed wheel 28, which is fixed on a shaft 29 journaled in a bearing 30, is adapted for engaging the spokes or bearings 25, whereby the wheel 24 is thrown into engagement with and revolves the wheel 11 or 15, depending upon the direction of revolution of the shaft 29, which is turned by the crank When the wheel 28 moves the wheel 24 into engagement with and turns the wheel 14, the curtain 3 is wound by a positive action on the roller 4: and drawn off the roller 5, the revolution of the latter being effected by the curtain and retarded by a brake such as the dished disk 32 fixed thereto and the engaging leather. or other frictional device 33 fixed to the yoke 9: when the reversely revolving wheel 28 moves the wheel 2% into engage ment with and turns the wheel 15, the curtain 3 is wound upon the roller 5 and drawn off the roller 4 which is subject to the braking action of the dished disk 34: thereon and the engaging leather or other frictional material 35, carried by the yoke 9; the yoke 9 being adjustable on its bearings 36 by the screw 37 whereby the braking action can be regulated.
As the restraining action of the braking mechanism on the rollers 4 and 5 is communicated to the wheels 14 and 15, it follows that, when the wheel 14L is in engagement with the wheel 24 and the wheel 28 acts upon the latter to shift it into engage ment with the wheel 15, the resistance of M. S EGLINTON.
