Be it known that I, HovsEP H. AsADoo- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented 4certain new Vand useful Improvements in Thread Cutters and Holders for Buttonhole-Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates `to such improvements and consists ofthe novel construction" and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, andthe reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure l of the drawings is a top plan view of part of a Reece button-hole-sewing machine showing my thread-cutting and holding attachment thereon. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. -Fig 3 is a view corresponding with a part ofFig. 2 showing a different position'of lthe movable parts. Theprincipal object of the invention is to cut and hold the thread upon. completion of the operationof stitching a button-hole.
My attachment made with proper modifications may be appliedto different button- 'hole-sewing machines; but it is especiallyadapted for use in connection with a buttonhole-sewing machine of the Reece type, the general structure of which is shown in Letters Patent No. 462,865, granted Nov. 10, In a machine of this type, the stitch-forming mechanism,` throatplate and buttonhole-cutter are mounted upon a frame which has a reciprocating movement relatively to the work-clamp and bed of the machine in the direction of the length of the buttonhole. When the operation of stitching the buttonhole is completed, said movable frame moves forward to the position in which the cutter operates, and -when in this position, the needle-bar and throat-plate are rotated in one direction,

Also in said type of machine, the shaft which operates the needle is driven by means of a clutch from theshaft which moves said frame, and which operates the cutter and rotates the needle-bar and throat-plate, and said clutch is automatically engaged and disengaged by rocking movement of a lever in the operation ofthe machine.
My improved attachment for cutting and holding the thread is adapted for automatic operation in combination with various of the movable parts referred to in the Reece type of machine or with similarly movable parts in other types of machine.
Asl the construction and operation of the Reece machine is well understood in the art, I have shown in the drawings only such parts thereof as are directly associated with the operation of my I attachment.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the stationary bed of the machine and 2 is the carriage or frame, which, inthe operation of the machine in stitching a buttonhole, moves first in the direction of the arrow, 3,

the means for moving said frame not being shown. This frame carries the stitch-forming mechanism, which is operated in the usual manner. The needle-bar, 4, has the usual vertical reciprocating motion, and is rotated at certain times by means of a pinion, 5, thereon engaged by a gear-rack, 6, fixed upon the upright rocker-post, 7, to which a rocking motion is at certain times imparted in the operation of the machine.

Said latch, 19, is thus supported in the path of the rocker-arm, 11, as the same is swung back and forth in pai-taking of the rocking movement of the post, 7, said latch being adapted to yield to permit the free passage of the arm, 11, in its movement toward the front end of the machine; butit is adapted to resist the movement of said arm, 11, in a rearward direction, whereby it causes said rearward movement of the arm, 11, to rock the lever, 19, to force the slide, 17, toward the front end of'the machine, that is, toward the left as seen-in Fig. 2.v This rocking movement of the lever, 19, brings the upper end of the lever, 19, and latch, 19, below the level of the arm, 11, permitting the arm to finally pass over and beyond the latch, as shown in Fig. 2. As soon as the arm, 11, passes the latch, 19a, in its rearward movement, the slide, 17, is automatically restored to its rearmost position by means of a coil-spring, 25, attached at one end to said slide and at its other end to the bed of themachinc. Just before the stitching of the next buttonhole is begun, the rocker-post, 7, operates to rotate the needle-bar and at the same time moves the arm, 11, rearward against, and past, the latch, 19a, imparting a forward movement tothe slide, 17, its extension, 26, and the' cutter and other parts carried thereby,which forward movement by engagement ofthe stud, 41, with the cam, 40, opens the cutter and holder to release the end of the thread, and locks thecutter open by means of the keeper, 37, as above explained.
In Fig. 1 the parts are shown Withy the movable frame, 2, in the buttonliole-cutting position, just after the cutter has been released by the keeper, 37, and actuated by its spring, 34. Width at the end which engages the keeper, 37, to permit the cutter to be released by a comparatively short movement of the keeper.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis- 1. In a machine of the class described, and in combination, a bed; stitch-forming mechanism, comprising in 'part a thread-carrying member; a slide capable of to-and-fro movement and having a slideway at right angles to the line of said movement; a cutter-plate movable in said slideway at right angles to the line of movement of said slide having a cutter adapted to engage a thread extending between the Work and said thread-carrying member; a spring for actuating said cutter-plate in a directionto cut the thread; an automatically engaging keeper for retaining the cutter in its open position against the force of said spring; means for moving said slide to-and-fro; means actuated by movement of said slide in one direction for opening the cutter and permitting the engagement of said keeper; and means for automatically releasing said keeper.

In a machine of the class described, and in combination, a bed; stitch-forming mechanism, comprising in part a thread-carrying member; a slide capable of to-and-fro movement and `having a slideway at right angles t0 the line of` said movement; a cutter-plate movable in said-slidevvay at right angles to the line of movement of said slide, having a cutter adapted to engage a thread extending between the Work andsaid thread-carrying member; a spring for actuating said cutterplate in a direction tocut the thread; an automatically engaging keeper for retainingthe cutter in open position against the force of said spring; means for moving said slide to-and-fro; a cam-follower connected with said cutter-plate;`a cam-.plate in the path of said cam-follower adapted to bc engaged thereby when said slide is moved in one direction, to open the cutter and permit the engagement of said keeper; and means for automatically releasing said keeper.
4. In a machine of the class described, and inl-combination, a bed; stitch-forming mechagv anism, comprising in part a thread-carrying Y member; a reciprocatory plate; a cutter movably mounted on said plate and carried thereby, said cutter being adapted to engage a thread extending between the work and said-thread-carrying member; a spring for closing said cutter to sever the thread; an automatically engaging keeper for holding said cutter open against the force of said spring; a cam-follower connected with said cutter; a cam-plate in the path of said camfollovver adapted to be engaged thereby when said reciprocatory plate is moved in one direction, to open the cutter and permit the engagement of said keeper; a lever connected With said reciprocatory plate whereby said plate can be moved in the direction to'open the cutter; a spring for moving said reciprocatory member in the opposite direction; a rocker-arm adapted at certain times toengage said lever and thereby move said reciprocatory member against the force of its actuated spring; and a rocker-arm adapted at certain times to automatically engager and release said keeper.

In a buttonhole-sewing machine of the class described, and in combination, a stationary bed; 'a frame movable to-and-fro upon said bed; stitch-forming mechanism carried by said movable frame including a rotatively mounted vertically reciprocatory needle-bar and needle, an upright rockerpost, operatively connected with the needlebar to rotate the same, and a lever whereby the vertical reciprocating movement of the needle is automatically started at the beginning of the stitching of a buttonhole and lil@ automatically stopped at the end of the stitching thereof, said frame being automatically moved forward and back and said rocker-post being` automatically rocked in one direction during the interval when the needle is idle and said rocker-post being automatically rocked in' the opposite direc-I tion during the stitching operation of the needle; a slideway mounted upon said bed; a slide movable in said slideway parallel with the line of the buttonhole; a cutter movably mounted'y on said slide Vadapted to engage a thread carried by said needle during the forward movement of said frame, while the ver- -tical reciprocating movement of said needle is discontinued; a spring for closing said cutterto sever the thread; an automatically engaging'keeper for holding said cutter open against the ,force of lsaid spring; acamfollower connected with said cutter; a camplate in the path of said cam-follower adapted to be engaged thereby when said slide is moved forward, to open the cutter and permit the engagement -ofsaid keeper; arockerarm fixed upon said rocker-post; a lever Pconnected with said slide adaptedto be engaged by said rocker-arm to impart a forward movement to said slide; a spring for imparting a return movement to said slide; and an arm mounted upon said first mentioned lever and adapted by the resultant needle-stopping movement thereof and forward movement of said frame to release said keeper.

In a machine of the class described, and in combination, a stationary bed; a frame movable to-and-fro upon said bed; stitchforming mechanism carried by said movable frame including a rotatively mounted vertically reciprocatory needle-bar and needle, an upright rocker-post operatively connected with the needle-bar to rotate the same, and a lever whereby the vertical reciprocating movement of the needle is automatically started at the beginning of the stitching of a buttonhole and' automatically stopped at the end of the stitching thereof, said frame being adapted to be moved forward and back, and said rocker-.post being automatically rocked ,inv one direction during the interval when the needle is idle and. said rocker-'post being automatically rocked in the opposite direction during the stitching operation of the needle; a slideway mounted upon said bed; a slide movable in said slide-4 way parallel with the line of the buttonhole, said slide having on its front-end a slideway at right angles to its line of movement; a cutter-plate reciprocatory in said slideway on said slide and having a cutter adapted to engage a thread carried by said needle, during the forward movement of said frame, while the vertically reciprocating movement of said needle is discontinued; a spring for moving said cutter-plate in a direction to close the cutter and cut the thread; Van automatically engaging lreeper for holding Said 4cutter open against the force of said spring; a cam-follower connected with said cutter-plate; a cam-plate in the path of said cam-follower adapted to be engaged thereby when said slide is moved forward to open the cutter and permit the engagement of saidkeeper; a rocker-arm fixed upon said rocker-post; a lever connected with said slide adapted to be engaged by said rocker-arm to imparta forward movement to said slide; -a spring for imparting a return movement to said slide; and an arm mounted upon said first mentioned lever and adapted by the resultant needle-stopping movement thereof and fon ward movement of said-frame to release said keeper. f
