GUIDE FOR LOG-TURNERS.
Application filed. June 11, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. PELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for Iiog-Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
The main objects of this invention are to cushion the impact of the toothed bar of a log turner, commonly called a nigger, at the ends of the floor plate or guide and thus avoid violent shocks and injury to the machine, to facilitate assembling and renewing parts, and generally to improve the construction and operation of devices of this class.
It consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter particularly described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing like characters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view and horizontal section on the line 1-1, Fig. 3, of one form of device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a front end elevation and partial section on the line 33, Fig. 1; and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are similar views of a modified form of the device, Fig. 4 being a plan view and horizontal section on the line 4l4, Fig. 6, Fig. 5 a side elevation, and Fig. 6 a front end elevation in which certain parts are broken away.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the device comprises two side members a, two end stops or bumpers b and 6, two rods 0 guided in the side members lengthwise thereof and connecting the stops or bumpers b and b, and spiral springs d, interposed between the ends of the side members and the stops or bumpers and normally holding them apart. Each side member a is formed with a horizontal base plate 6, and at right angles thereto and along one side thereof, with an upwardly extending vertical guide plate 1. The parts of the guide are assembled as shown, with the vertical guide plates f parallel with each other on the inner sides of the horizontal base plates e, so as to confine and guide the toothed bar of the log turner or nigger, indicated at h in Fig. 1,

in its various movements. The plates e, which are bolted, as indicated in Fig. 3, to floor timbers g of a mill, are preferably ribbed or flanged lengthwise and crosswise on the under side, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to strengthen them and to assist in securely and firmly holding the side members in place, the ribs or flanges being mortised or sunk into the floor timbers. Adjacent to their ends the side members are formed on the upper sides of the plates 6 and the outer sides of the plates f, with boxlike housings or enlargements i, and in these housings or enlargements next to the plates f, midway between their upper and lower edges, are formed longitudinal guide channels or grooves j for the connecting rods 0, which are loosely fitted and confined therein when the parts of the guide are assembled, as shown. The rods 0 are provided at the ends with heads k, which for the purpose of greater strength and security against displacement are preferably formed integrally therewith. The stops or bumpers b and b are formed in opposite sides with open recesses Z, which are arranged in alinement with the channels j in the side members and are enlarged at their outer ends to receive and hold the heads 70 of the connecting rods 0, the enlargements of the recesses forming. shoulders or seats for engagement with the heads of the rods. These shoulders or seats are formed with lugs m, to engage with the outer sides of the heads 70 and prevent accidental displacement of the rods 0 by the hard usage to which the device is subjected in practice. The springs d are inserted and held in sockets a, formed therefor in the housings z of the side members a, above and below and parallel with the channels or grooves j, and at their outer ends they engage with and are held in place by lugs 0, formed onthe inner faces of the steps or bumpers b and Z) above and below the recesses Z therein. For assembling and taking apart the members of the guide, the side members a are formed through the housings i with longitudinal passageways 10, into which the channels j open on their outer sides, and the stops or bumpers b and b are formed, as shown in Fig. 1, with bolt holes 9. The upper parts of the housings z are extended at the outer ends of the side members a, to form guards 1', which project over the stops or bumpers b and b and cover the spaces between them and the side members so as to prevent refuse such as splinters,
pieces of bark and sawdust from falling into these spaces and interfering with the proper action of the stops or bumpers.
To assemble and connect the parts or members of the guide, the springs at having been inserted in the sockets n and the stops or bumpers b and b placed in position against the outer ends of the springs with the recesses Z in alinement with the channels j,.a threaded bolt .9 is inserted through the holes 9, as shown in Fig. l, and the stops or bumpers b and b are drawn together, thereby compressing the springs d by turning up the nut on said bolt. The rods 0 are then inserted through the passageways p in the i side members, and being brought into position with their heads is opposite the enlarged outer ends of the recesses Z, are shifted sidewise into place in the channels j and recesses Z.. The nut on the bolt 8 is now removed, and the bolt is Withdrawn from the stops or bumpers b and 6, thereby releasing them and permitting the springs d, which are under tension, to force them outwardly till the shoulders or seats in the recesses l engage with the heads 7: on the rods o, and the lugs we engage with or project over the outer sides of the heads, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
To take the, guide apart for replacing a broken member or for any other purpose,
the operations above described are performed in the reverse order, the stops or bumpers b and 6 being drawn together with abolt. s to release the connecting rods 0 and permit. their removal sidewise from the channels j and recesses Z.
The members of the guide may be assembled or taken apart, as above explained, either before or after the side members a are bolted in place to the floor timbers of a mill, the bolt 8 being passed between the side plates and adjacent teeth of the nigger baplaft'er the guide has been installed in a m1 a The front stop or bumper b is recessed on the inner side, as shown in Fig. 1, in the usual manner, to clearthe teeth of the nigger bar it.
.Tnthe operation of the device, when the nigger barb is thrown backward or forward against the back stop I) or the front stop 6, the force of its impact against either stop or bumper will be relieved, and shock and injury to the apparatus will be prevented by the compression of the springs d at the opposite end of the guide, both stops or bumpers being shifted in the direction of the movement of the bar.

The yielding stops or bumpers b and b are also formed with holes through which the rods 0 pass. ihe front stop 5 is made in two parts which are guided in and protected by housings 25 formed on the front ends of the side members a from which they project toward each other into the path of the side plates or members of the toothed bar it, as shown in Fig. 5, said parts being separated sufficiently to clear the teeth of said bar. The rear stop 1) consists of a single straight bar, spanning the space between the side members a and is secured on the rods 0 by a. key piece to passing through slots in said rods. The key piece it is tapered or beveled at one or both ends, as shown in Fig. 5, so that by driving or forcing it into place through the slots in the rods 0, in assembling the parts of the guide, all the springs d are compressed, normally holding the stops or bumpers at a distance from the outer ends of the housings i. The key piece it is fastened in place by pins or cotters o. The base plates 6 are preferably extended at their rear ends as shown at w, to guide and support the rear stop I). Sliding spacing bars 00, guided in the side members a parallel with the rods 0 and bearing at their ends against the front and back stops, hold the parts of the front stop 6 in alinement with each other crosswise of the guide and parallel with the rear stop 6 whenthey are struck and shifted by the toothed bar it. In other respects the guide shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 is substantially like that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, in construction and operation.
Various changes in minor details of construction and arrangement of parts other than those illustrated and particularly described may be made without departure from the principle and scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a guide for log turners the combination of parallel side members, stops or bumpers normally spaced from the ends of the side members, rods guided in the side members lengthwise thereof and connecting the stops or bumpers, and springs interposed between the side members and the stops or bumpers.
2. In a guide for log turners the combination of side members each consisting of a horizontal base plate, a vertical guide plate along its inner side, and spring housings, stops or bumpers normally spaced from the outer ends of the spring housings and extending into the space between the side members, springs held in said housings and bearing at their outer ends against the stops or bumpers, and rods guided in said housings parallel with the guide plates and connecting the stops or bumpers at opposite ends thereof.
3. In a guide for log turners the combination of parallel side members provided with spring housings adjacent to the ends, yielding stops or bumpers normally spaced from the outer ends of said housings, springs confined in said housings and bearing at their outer ends against said stops or bumpers, and rods passing through and guided in said housings and connecting the stops or bumpers at opposite ends of the guide.
4. In a guide for log turners the combina tion of parallel side members, yielding stops or bumpers adjacent to the ends of the side members, the front stop or bumper consisting of two parts projecting opposite each other into the space between the side members, springs interposed between the side members and said stops or bumpers, rods guided in the side members lengthwise thereof and connecting the rear stop or bumper with the parts of the front stop or bumper, and spacing bars guided in the side members parallel with said rods and bearing at one end against the rear stop or bumper and at the other end against the parts of the front stop or bumper.
5. In a guide for log turners the combination of parallel side members, front and rear yielding stops or bumpers, the front stop consisting of two opposite parts spaced lat from each other, springs interposed between the side members and the stops or bumpers, rods guided in the side members and passing through said stops or bumpers, said rods having heads at their front ends for engagement with the parts of the front stop or bumper and formed with slots adjacent to their rear ends, a key piece having a tapering or beveled end and passing through the slots in said rods outside of the rear stop or bumper, and spacing bars guided in the side members parallel with said rods and bearing at their ends against the stops or bumpers.
6. In a guide for log turners the combination of parallel side members formed adjacent to their ends with spring housings and at their front ends with stop housings, a rear stop extending across the space between the side members at their rear ends, a front stop consisting of two separated parts guided in said stop housings and projecting therefrom opposite each other into the space between the side members, springs held in the spring housings with their outer ends against said stops, and parallel rods guided in the spring housings, passing through the springs and connecting the rear stop with the parts of the front stop.
