To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, DANIEL HILLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at iVellston, St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coaling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus particularly designed for delivering coal to the tenders of traveling trains, the invention comprehending specifically a structure by which the coal is automatically delivered to the tender in the travel of the latter beneath the bins.
This invention is an improvement on the coaling devices described and claimed in LettersPatent of the United States No. 1,097,434, granted to me May 19, 1914, the object of the present invention being to provide an improved means for automatically controlling the coal car lever and prevent coal from being casually delivered to said car.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particu larly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the improved coal delivering apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the dumping sections locked in position to form a bottom for the bin. Fig. 3 is a similar view with one of the locking slides in released position and the dumping sections in discharge position.

Referring particularly to the accompany ing drawings, the improved delivery apparatus comprises a series of bins 1 including side and end walls 2 and 3, the bins being supported on a platform 4 arranged above the track 5 on a suitable framework 6.
The bins are arranged in longitudinal alinement and are each wholly independent, being preferably provided in series as shown, in order that a number of trains may receive coal therefrom without the necessity of recharging the bin. The bottom of each bin is made up of a plurality, preferably two, dumping sections 7, each having a length approximately one-half the length of the bin and a width corresponding to the distance between the side walls of the bin. Each dumping section is pivotally mounted between side walls of the bin on a shaft 8, said shaft being secured to the section adja cent one end thereof, as shown. The shafts are preferably arranged adjacent similar ends of the dumping sections, that is the shaft of one dumping section will be secured thereto adjacent the end wall 3 of the bin while the shaft of the remaining dumping section will be secured thereto adjacent the center of the bin. By this construction the dumping sections tilt in the same direction in operation and therefore avoid the possibility of binding under the load. The shorter end of each dumping section is provided with a weight 9 serving to counterbalance the longer end of the section, so that when free to operate, the sections resume a horizontal or bottom forming position. The ends of the shafts 8 project beyond the side wall 2 of the bin, and are provided with looking members 10 rigidly secured to the shaft. Said members are of rectangular form having their major length corresponding and in alinement with the dumping section, and are arranged on theshaft so that they are in spaced relation from the side wall of the bin.
To the side wall of the bin in alinement with the locking members are fixed trackways 11 which trackways include guiding sections 12 secured to the sides 2 by reduced web portions, the guiding sections corresponding in width and height to the similar dimensions of the locking members. A slide is arranged for cooperation with the trackways including a body 13 formed with a longitudinally extending channel 14: of a size to receive and cooperate with the trackways 11, the entrance to said channel through the inner side of the slide snugly fitting the web of the trackway to prevent separation of the slide and trackway. The slide is also preferably provided with antifriction rollers 15 which bear upon appropriate portions of the track in the movement of the slide, whereby to insure easy movement and avoid undue friction. As the slide and channel are of a size and shape to co operate with the trackways, it will obviously so cooperate with the locking members 10 when the latter are alined with the trackway. The slide is of a length exceeding the distance between the proximate ends of the trackways 11, so that the slide is always in cooperation with one or the other trackway. Depending from the slide at each end is a standard 16, which is preferably braced from the body by a brace 17.

This cam rail is secured on the posts or other suitable supports 23 at a suitable point at one side of the railway track; The cam rail comprises the oppositely inclined upwardly converging end portions 24L and the horizontally arranged elevated, intermediate portion 25. A brace rod 26 is also employed which is arranged a suitable distance below the elevated portion 25 and ends of which are connected to the inclined cam portions 24. Immediately after a load has been dumped into the coal car the forward movement of the train brings the tappet roller 21 into engagement with one of thecam ends 24 of the cam rail thus causing the free end of the lever to be automatically raised and thereby lowering the lug 19 to prevent the operation of other dumping sections, the length of the elevated portion 25 of the cam rail being such as to hold the lever 18 in elevated position until after the coal car'has passed from under the elevated bin.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim 1. In combination with'coal delivery apparatus comprising a bin above the railway track, a dumping member forming the bottom of the bin and having a locking element, a guide track and aslide mounted for moveguide track and to normally dumping member in closed carried means to engage an shde, car-carried means to project and withdraw said slide-engaging means and fixed means, at one side of the railway track to automatically withdraw said slide-engaging means as the car passes.
