To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ FEER, a citizen of the Swiss Confederation, residing at Streitgasse No. 7, Basel, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Generators, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has reference to acetylene lamps and more particularly to those which are used by workmen on the bench or otherwise.
The objects of my present invention are to improve and simplify the construction of the lamp in such a manner that the lamp may be easily charged with carbid, that the supply of water to the carbid may be controlled according to requirements and the generated gas is purified before it is conveyed to the burner.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the particular construction of parts as hereinafter explained, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and covered in the annexed claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 shows one form of construction of the improved acetylene lamp in sectional elevation. Fig. 2 shows another form of the improved lamp in a sectional elevation.
The lamp shown in Fig. 1 consists of two principal portions that is to say the water vessel 1 and the receptacle 2 for the reception of the carbid. The receptacle 2 fits loosely in the vessel 1 and forms the lid thereof which may be easily removed. The receptacle 2 has a cone projecting into the vessel 1 said portion has at its lower end a conical spout 3 which is closed by a stopper 4 of porous material for instance of cork. The upper part of receptacle 2 is closed by a lid 5 on which a burner 6 is fixed. In the receptacle 2 there are two portions 7 formed by perforated metal plates between which a pad made of a loose kind of felt or other suitable fibrous or other suitable material is arranged. The plates 7 may have any number of perforations. 'The arrangement of the holes in the plates is such "that the gas has to pass a long way through the pad.
The water enters through the stopper 4 and comes in contact with the carbid by the receptacle 2. As the gas is generated in the lower part of the receptacle 2 it passes through the perforations of the plates 7 and through the filtering pad to the burner 6.
The filtering pad arrests any moisture or small particles in the gas and thus dries and purifies the same and improves the light.-
To regulate the production of gas the stopper at is pushed more or less into the spout 3, the cork being compressed more or less offers correspondingly more or less resistance to the flow of water through its pores.
The stopper 4: may be made of several parts or it may be provided with slots or bores, in such a manner that the access of water is free up to the orifice of the spout 3 that part of the stopper 4 projecting into the spout resisting only the flow of water.
The lamp shown in Fig. 2 differs from that shown in Big. 1 in this respect that means are provided to adjust the level of the water in the vessel 15. The latter is pro vided with a partition 8 having at its center a tube 9 projecting downward and ending near the bottom 11 0f the vessel 15. Near the uppermost part of the partition 8 a pipe leads into the vessel 15 which is connected to an air pump 10. Bv means of said pump 10 air may be pressed below the partition 8 and the water is forced through the who 9 into the chamber 13. The water pressure resting on the stopper 4 may be altered acco ding to requirement.

An acetvlenelamn comprising in combination a water vessel. a partition in said water vessel. a tube fixed on said partition ending near the bottom of said water vessel, an air pump fixed to said water vessel. a pipe connecting sa d air pump with the chamber below said partition. a receptacle for the carbid looselv mounted on the water vessel having a conical portion projecting into the water vessel. a conical spout on said receptacle, an adiustable cork sto per in said spout. perfo ated plates in said receptacle, a pad of fibrous material between said plates. a burner fixed on said receptacle substantiallv as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. An acetylene lamp comprising in combination a water receptacle. a superimposed water receptacle positioned thereon. a pipe secured to the base of. said superimposed water receptacle extending into said water receptacle, means for forcing ater from said Water receptacle into said superimposed receptacle, an inverted cone shaped carbid container having an opening in the base thereof and extending into said superimposed receptacle, an adjustable stop for said opening, a pair of plates secured in spaced relation in the top of said carbid container, a cleansing material positioned intermediate said plates, said plates having means formed therein to tortuously flow the gases through said cleaning material, a burner secured to said carbid container, said burner spaced FRITZ FEER.
