JOHN H. ASHTON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE WATER-HEATER.
A,pplieatien filed September 23, 1pm. serial Np. 863 074.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, JO N H. AsI-rroN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Providence in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
lvly invention relates to an improved heating appliance or apparatus for use in shower bathing, and it consists in the con struction and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter set forth claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a side elevation, in partial section, showing my improved shower bathing appliance eompletefFig. 2 is a corresponding top plan view; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional View taken through the lowerportion of the steam inlet connection.
A, in the drawings indicates a shower bath device embodying my improvements. The lower cap B consists of the disk-like hori zontal head provided withan integral projecting bracket a? having a vertically disposed fiange a adapted to be secured by bolts mi to a support or partition, as p; the
said head is fnrther provided with suitably located small hubs orbosses 7, 0 and 0, tapped to respectively receive the inlet branch pipe 7 of the cold water main 1; the inlet branch 0 leading from the live steam main 2, and the outlet branch '6 leading to the waste or exhaustmain35 which conducts the condensed steam from the heating coil D. The water heating tank a consists of a hollow cylindrical metalcasing having its lower end provided with an outer flange aregistering with said head B, the tank being removably secured to the head by means of bolts m and forming a water tight joint. The upper end of the tank has an open cylindrical recess of considerable depth formed therein; the bottom of the recess being closed. A steam heating coilD is located and secured in thetank a ,1 the inlet member 0 of the coil is shown as extending upwardly from the boss 0 and between the adjacent wall of said recess 7) and the inner periphery of the convolutions of the coils of the heater;

It may be added that a battery of individual heaters or units A embodying my improvements may be located at suitable intervals from one another and connected to mains common to all. As thus arranged any or all of the heaters are capable of being utilized at the same time as desired. By closing the steam valve 11 and opening the cold water valve 1) a person may receive a cold shower bath. By opening both the said valves, '0 0 a hot or warm shower is secured. By closing valveo and opening valve o the water in the tank will be gradually converted into low pressure steam or vapor, to produce a vapor bath, and after a warm shower the valve l) may be closed and the water inlet open there by gradually cooling the temperature of the shower until the temperature of the water issuing from the head E is the same as that of the inflow from the pipe f.
In my improved shower bathing appliance the construction is simple, easily operated, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and not liable to become accidentally'inoperative. It possesses the added advantages of heating the water more quickly owing partly to the inclosed displacement member Z2 fixed interiorly of the tank chamber. Ihe device A differs from other shower heaters of this general type in that the latter includes the use in each of a ther mostat, a diaphragm valve, a thermometer, and also requires the services of a skilled attendant.
I claim as my invention 1. A water-heating apparatus comprising a flat, disk-like bottom head, said head having means integral therewith for securing the apparatus to aside wall, a steam heating pipe coil secured to and extending upwardly from said head, said coil adapted to connect respectively with a steam supply and exhaust, means for automatically preventing back-flow of vapor or water of condensation into the coil, an inverted hollow cylindrical casing or water tank, said tank fixed water-tight to the upper side of said head Gcpies of this patent may be obtained for and completely enveloping the heating-coil,
means connected with said head for supply ing water under pressure into the tank to be heated therein by the coil, and means for discharging water from the tank, constructed and arranged whereby the tank is adapted for removal bodily from the bottom head, while all the pipe-joints are intact, thereby rendering the heating-coil easily accessible.
2. In a water heating apparatus of the general character described, the combination of a relatively stationary base head, a steam heating coil secured to said head, a chambered tank or casing enveloping said coil removably secured to the base, the upper portion of said casing being provided interiorly with a fixed longitudinally extending dis-- placement member arranged to reduce the area of the water space at that point to facilitate heating, and having coils of the heater circularly disposed in the space lying between the wall of the said displacement member and the inner surface of the wall of the casing.
3. In a heating device for individual or unitary shower bathing apparatus, a bottom or base flange, said flange having an extension or bracket integral therewith adapted to be secured to a wall or support, a tank for holding water removably secured to said base flange, a steam heating coil having its ends secured in said flange and extending upward in the tank, controlled means for admitting steam under pressure to the heating coil, an automatically operable check valve connected with the exhaust end of the coil to prevent a back flow of condensed steam, vapor, (520., under pressure from entering the coil, and controlled means for admitting water under pressure into the tank and around the heating coil from a source of'supply, the said tank being adapted for removal bodily from the said base flange, the latter at the same time having the coil and its connections normally connected therewith.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. ASHTON.
