In a winding machine, the combination with a. shaft, of means carried by said shaft for receiving the material to be wound a motor for rotating said shaft and receiving means, an auxiliary shaft, a reel mounted on said auxiliary shaft and carrying the material to be wound on saidreceiving means, retarding mechanism associated with said auxiliary shaft to maintain the material taut while being wound, meansfor control, ling said motor, and a device operated by irregularities in the material to be wound to efiect a stopping of the motor.
2. The combination with winding mechanism, of an electric motor for driving the same, brake apparatus comprising a magnet,
an auxiliary switch in circuit with said mag- .-net, an electro-magnet associated with said auxiliary switch, and a circuit-closer operated by an irregularity in the material to be wound to effect the energization of said last-named electro-magnet and the opening of said auxiliary switch.
3. The combination with winding mecha nism for insulated wire, of a motor for driv-. ing the same, motoncontrolling .means, an
electro-magnet ic switch associated with said motor-controlling means, a plurality of relatively movable conductors normally held apart by the insulated wire but electrically connected by an uninsulated portion there of to efi'ect the operation of said electromagnetic switch and the stopping .of the motor, and a circuit-closer co-acting with said conductors and operated by a portion of enlarged diameter of said insulated .wire to effect'the same operation of the switch and'the stopping of the motor.
