OLIVER KOONCE, F CASTOR, LOUISIANA.- v
IN TERMITTNT-GRI'P DVICE FOR WIRE-STRETCHERS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1915.
Application led October 24, 1912. Serial No. 727,593,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER KooNoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castor, in the parish of Bienville and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Intermittent-Grip Devices for Wire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wire stretchers and has special reference to a wire stretcher designed to stretch all of the fence `at the same time'.
The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide a novel form of pawl and ratchet mechanism for useV in connection with such a stretcher.
With the aboveand other objects in view,
panying drawings wherein there is shown a perspective view showing the improved stretcher in use.
In carrying out the objectsof the invention there is provided a U-shaped frame 10,
and at the ends of the arms of this framev are provided bearings for the journals 11 of a drum 12 which has mounted at each end a ratchet wheel 13. Also carried on the journals 11 and having its arms embraced by the arms of the frame 10 is a second or operating frame 14 also U-shaped and provided with an operating lever or handle 15. Pivotally mounted adjacent the bight of the frame 10 is a U-shaped member 16 having the ends of the legs pointed as at 17 to form pawls for engaging the ratchet 'wheels 13. A similar pawl member 18 is mounted in the frame 14 and each of these members is held in operative position relative to the ratchets by means of a certain spring. Each of these springs comprises a flat portion 19 which is gained into a bight of the respective U-shaped member, and an off-set angularly disposed portion 20 which lies loosely in a recess formed in the side of the bight of the respective pawl member.
Extending through each of the frames 10 and 14. is a releasing device comprising a single length of rod having ournal portions 21 at each end and a centrally disposed por.
tion 22 oH-set from the journal portions. F rom one of the journal portions 21 of each releasing member extends a handle. Projecting from the drum 12 is a pin 28 whereto is secured one end of a flexible strand 24 which carries at its other end a hook 25 arranged to engage clamping tongs. 26 which in turn hold a post 27 which has the fence 28 The member 10 lis prosecured thereto. vided with an eye 29 from whence extends' a flexible strand 30 arranged to be secured to a second post 31 fixed in the ground.
In the operation of the device it is simply necessary to oscillate the handle l5 after the parts have been adjusted as shown in the figure, and the strand 24: will be wound up on the drum 12 thus tightening the fence. After the fence has been properly tightened and secured in position, the pawls may be released by moving the handles sol as to throw said pawls out of engagement with the ratchets thus enabling the device to be removed from the fence.
Thererhas thus been provided a simple and eilicient device Vof the character described, and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A device of the class described comprising a fra-me, a drum carried thereby, ratchets formed upon said drum, a pawl engaging said ratchets and comprising substantially U-shaped body portions, said pawl also comf prising a pair of substantially parallel arms being spaced from the inner face of said frame, a lifter engaging the under faces of said substantially parallel arms and comprising an off-set crank portion having short i bearing portions adjacent each end of said crank portion, a handle extending laterally from one of said short journal portions and projecting from said frame for facilitating the moving of said arms out of engagement with said ratchets'formed upon said drum,`
and means for normally urging said pawl in engagement with said ratchet.
In testimony whereof I- hereunto aiiiX `my signature in presence of two witnesses.
