To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK O. PARsoivsf a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The subject of the present invention is a case hardening or annealing furnace of the underfired type which has been designed to permit of an eflicient and convenient operation. Extremely good results are also obtained by reason of the. perfect sealing or closure of the combustion'or heating chamber.
It has heretofore been impossible to design an annealing furnace in which the holders for the material were entirely removable from the furnace by reason of the lack of any suitable means for sealing the space between such holders and the sides of the furnace when the holders were in position.
In the present invention I have provided a removabletruck or work holder which may be sealed against the sides of the furnace when the holders were in position.
In the present invention I have provided a removable truck or work holder which may be sealed against the sides of the furnace when in position, thus preventing the escape of any of the hot gases or the inlet of any excess air from the outside.
To the accomplishment of these and related ends said invention then consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mech- -anism embodying the invention, such dismay be placed in the furnace walls 7 as in Fig. 1, or in the main floor 8 of the trucks as shown in 3. If placed in the position shown in' Fig. 1 the burners will be suitably connected by means of pipes-9 and 10 with an air and gas supply. If mounted on the truck the connections will be similar, consisting of pipes 11 and 12, but it will be necessary to provide a flexible connection between the main supply pipe and a pipe which is mounted in the rear of thefurnace wall. This connection must therefore be broken upon each removal of the truck from the furnace.
The truck is provided with a main floor 8 composedof suitable refractory material such as'fire-brick, and above the main floor there willbe mounted a second or supplementary floor 15, thus forming a combustion chamber between the main and secondary floors. "The burners 6 in the walls of the furnace will be disposed at such a level that they will discharge directly into the space between the two floors. The floors are so spaced that a combustion chamber is formed between them. The'mateiial which is being treated will, of course, be carried-upon the second floor and thus it will be'heated from all sides. The furnace chamber thus formed will'be heated on all sides by the burning gas, particularly on the sides and floor and the materials will be heated by heat radiated from these parts.
In this way all directheating of the materlal is eliminated,,that is, the gas flame is heating eificiency'of the furnace.
Upon the sides of the truck and at the 1 same level upon the-;-sides of the furnace there are mountedinclined or beveled plates 16 and-17 which are adapted to be contacted throughout their length by pivotally mounted bars 18, such bars being supported upon the furnace chamber.
