ICE-CREAM LADLE.
Specification et Letters Patent.
Patented Mal-.23, 1915.
Application tiled February 3, 190B. Serial No. 414,016.
To all whom it may concern.' .e
Be it known t at I, RAYMoN B. GIL- CHRIST, a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Cream Ladles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to improvements in ladles or dippers of the type designed more especially for serving ice-cream or like purposes. y
In the use of ice-cream ladles it is desirable that the scraper for separating the icecream from the bowl, be susceptible of easy and'convenient manipulation. It is also desirable that the structure be constituted of readily separable parts, so that those parts,
which in use, are brought into contact with l ice-cream, may be readily disconnected, so they can be cleaned or washed. In practice it has been found that unless the. removable part o r parts maybe quickly and easily disconnected from one another, the attendant is likely to avoid cleaning them as frequently as necessary to keep ythem in sanitary condition.
rlhe invention designs to provide a device embodying parts which may be readily disconnected and cleaned so they will be kept in sanitary condition.
. A further object of the invention is to provide an improved device in which the scraper actuatingmechanism is actuated in one direction by a spring, and in which the spring is concealed or protected from contact with the ice cream, and also to provide a mechanism of this character in which the spring can be easily replaced in event of its becoming broken or inoperative.
The invention further designs to improve the construction and operation of devices of this character.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claim at the conclusion hereof.
'is rigidly secured to a of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is an enlarged section through the lever-pivot.
Devices of the class to which the resent invention relates, usually comprise a liandle, a bowl, a scraper for separating the icecream from the bowl and mechanism for relatively shifting the cutter and bowl to cause the ice-cream to be removed f romthe bowl. The device is provided with a handle 'or frame 10 which comprises a grip 9 and a stem 12 to which the. grip is secured in any suitable manner, as by a screw l1. To the enlarged outer end 12 of the'stem, a bowl 13 is rigidly secured. The top' of the bowl is open so that the ice-cream may be discharged therefrom and the lstem extends transversely from the axis of the bowl for convenience. in manipulating the ladle into and out of discharging position. A bowed scraper 14 is mounted so that it will sweep across the inner face of the bowl and substantially from edge to edge thereof to sepa rate or loosen the icecream from the bowl. At /its outer end, the scraper is provided with a stud or pintle 15 adapted to beheld in a bearing 16 formed in and near the edge of the bowl and the other end of the scraper shaft or spindle 17 which is disposed to overlie the stem 12 to provide a compact arrangement of parts. The inner end of the scraper shaft 17 is adapted to be seated and journaled in a closed bearing 18 formed in an upwardly projecting lug 19,' formed on the stein 12. The other or outer end of. the shaft 17 is slightly enlarged as at 17 and is adapted to pass into and be held in a open bearing recess 20 formed in the bowl and the enlarged end 12 of the stem 12. Scraper lil is resilient to cause it to effectively scrape the bowl and to yieldingly hold shaft 17 against 1ongitudinal movement in bearing 19. As a result of this construction, the scraper and its shaft are yieldingly held in the bearings so that either the pintle 15 or the inner end of shaft 17 may be shifted longitudinally to disconnect them from their respective bearings, thus roviding a shaft and scraper which may e readily removed. The mtle 15 is dis \osed so that it is alined wit the axis of t .e operating-shaft Ato avoid unnecesary friction on the shaft. e
Shaft 17 is preferably extended some distance from the bowl and to a point adjacent y the grip 9 so that the operating-mechanlsm will not be disposed in close proximity to the bowl where it is likely to come in contact with the ice-cream, or material for which the spoon is used. When this extended shaft is used, it is desirable to provide means adjacent the inner portion of the bowl or that portion to which the stem is secured, for holding the shaft against displacement and which means may be conveniently operated to release the shaft. thus serving as a latch or lock for holding the shaft in operative relation with respect to the handle. For this purpose, a latch or clip 22, formed of a strip of metal, is bent to encircle the shaft 17 and is provided at its lower end with a hook 23 adapted to engage a portion df the stem 12, the hook being sufficiently resilient to permit it to be swung into position illustrated in Fig. 4, or disconnected from the stem When it is desired to remove the shaft. Clip 22 is extended around shaft 17 and in an annular groove 2t formed in the enlarged portion 17 of the shaft, so that the upper or outer surface of thev clip will be substantially flush with the shaft to avoid projections likely to collect ice-cream or which would be otherwise objectionable near the bowl.
From the construction described, it will be obvious that the latch 22 may be readily shifted into and out of position to secure the shaft 17 againstwithdrawal from the frame or handle and provides lockingmeans which may be disposed in close proximity to the bowl to hold the shaft in operative position in the open bearing 20. lVhen it is desired to removethe shaft and sciaper, it is only necessary to manipulate the clip 22 to disconnect hook 23 from the stem. By then pressing pintle 15 inwardly to disengage it from bearing 16, the shaft will be free to be withdrawn from the bearing 18 at its other end. Bv reverse operation the shaft and cutter may be Areplaced yor reconnected to the'stem and be in operative relation with respect to the bowl.
Mechanism is provided for rotating the shaft 17'to operate the scraper with respect to the bowl. this mechanism comprising a finger-lever 25 provided with a finger-piece- 26 at its" free end and provided with an integral stud 27 adapted to be held in a bearing 28 extending through stem 12. The lever is provided with y a segmental rack or teeth 29 for engaging a pinion 30 secured to shaft 17 so that when the finger-lever is shifted laterally, the scraper will be operated through the necessary arc to effectively separate the ice-cream from the bowl. Preferably the lever is arranged soit may be swung laterally by pressure of the thumb, and toward the handle, the lever-pivot being disposed nearest the bowl so that the cooperating teeth for imparting moyement from the lever to shaft 17 will be disposed farthest from the bowl, that being desirable to prevent the coperating teeth from being dipped into the ice-cream when the ladle is being loaded. Furthermore, the fingerlever is disposed between the cutter-shaft and stem 12 so that it can be conveniently manipulated by the thumb when the bowl is inverted. By employing the coperating gear-teeth on the lever and shaft as described, the lever is mounted in the stem and the shaft may be disconnected from the stern and operating-lever without disconnecting the latter from the stern` which renders the disconnecting operation simple and convenient.
yShaft 17 is spring-operated in one direction to restore it to and hold it in normal position. A spring 31 for reversely shifting` the scraper and operating-parts, is disposed where there is no likelihood of it coming in contact with the ice-cream. being disposed between the enlarged hub 25 of the finger-lever and the stem 12, e'ach of said parts being provided with an annular recess 32 and V33 respectively in which the spring is inclosed. One end of the coilspring 31 is held in a notch 34 formed in' the linger-lever and the other end is held in a similar 'notch 35 formed in the stem. This construction provides a simple means for inclosing the spring between the lever and stein and ca'n be conveniently assembled by merely placing the spring in the stem and then turning the lever so as to bring the spring-terminal into the notch 34. A stopllg 36 is formed on the finger-lever, and a apted to engage lug 37 on the stem. This lug limits the movement of the operating-mechanism in the spring pressed direction'and properly positions'the cutter 14 in the bowl. Furthermore, in placing the. lever into connected relation with the stem, lug 36 will ride over the stem and when the lever and stem are held together the la? 36 will slip into engagement with lug 37 o the stem and hold the lever and stem in connected relation so that no auxiliary means is necessary for holding them in such relation. Furthermore, when the shaft/and scraper are removed td be cleaned, the relation of the lever and frame or stem and handle is not disturbed so that when the shaft is replaced the device will be operative. When the shaft has been connected to the handle it will serve to hold f he' invention posseses several important advantages. It provides a scraper which may be conveniently removed or disconnected from the frame for cleaning. The removable scraper-shaft is held against displacement adjacent the bowl by/means which ca'n be easily manipulated, is simple in construction and effectively serves to hold the shaft inoperative position at a point ad# the lever 1n onnected relation to the handle.
'acent the bowl. The o rating-mechanism is of such construction t at it can be easily manipulated and is disposed to avoid contact with the ice-cream. The spring is applied to the lever so that it is not necessary to disconnect the spring in order to remove the scraper and shaft, and furthermoret it is eectivelycovered to avoid contact with the ice-cream. The connection between the s ring lever and lthe frame permits separation of the lever for convenient replacement of the spring when it becomes ino erative or broken, and the stop device for t e lever is offsuch character that it will hold the lever under tension in the normal position of the lever. In the construction set forth, the initial movement of the lever is utilized to wind up .the spring so that when thestop device isy rendered operable to arrest the lever in the spring dpressed direction, the spring will be hel under tension. The
s aft when in o rative position serves to hold the ngerever against displacement a'nd the spring lrvs to hold` they lever against displacem t when .the shaft .is re- -mqved.- iThe construction of the device in ,its entirety issimple, so that it can vbe producedat a low cost and the device is eliicient in o ration.
restricted. to the details set forth since these may .be modified within the scope vof the appended claims without departing from t e spirit and scope of the invention.
