Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrr'r M. SoHUTz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicate Printing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in printing machines and has particular reference to improvements in machines for duplicating circular letters and similar printed articles.
The object of my invention is to provide a duplicating machine of such construction that it shall be free from parts or devices which are difficult of accurate adjustment, and by means of which substantially perfect results may be attained even when the device is operated by one who is unskilled in such matters.
A further object of my invention is to provide a duplicating machine wherein and whereby the intensity or depth of color of the printing may be quickly and easily regu lated to suit the circumstances.
My invention consists in a duplicating machine having a pressure roll capable of being rolled back and forth over the printing surface, and provided with a type form support which is capable ofbeing easily and quickly adjusted from and toward the path of the roll for varying the intensity of the impression.
My invention further consists in a machine of the kind described provided with an adjustable type-form support carried upon inclined surfaces and adjustable from and toward the path of the roller by transverse movement thereto.
My invention also consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts and in the distinctive features of construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by re'ference to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a printing machine embodying my invention in one form; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the machine, the roller and certain parts being removed for ilustrative purposes; Fig. 31s a.

My printing machine, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a tubular frame A,
supporting upon its upper end a rectangu lar bed plate B. This bed plate is supported at a convenient height so that when the operator sits before the machine the plate B shall be at such height that the sheets of paper may be readily manipulated for printing. The printing operation is performed by means of a heavy roller C, which rolls back and forth upon the upper part of the machine in guides or ways D, provided thereon. This pressure roller is operated to roll back and forth by means of vertically movable pedals E which are pivoted upon a longitudinal brace rod F arranged at the forward part of the lower portion of the frame, and the rear ends of these levers are connected together by means of a cable G which is wound around the rear end o of the pressure roller C. This end of the pressure roller is provided with a groove 0 to receive the cable, and the cable is given one or more complete turns upon the roller. The movement of the levers up and down serve to transmit a rolling motion to the pressure roller and cause it to roll back and forth upon the machine. The bed plate B comprises a rectangular frame having side members 6 end members 6 and transverse brace members 6 parallel with the end members 5 and arranged intermediate thereof. These transverse brace members 79 are arranged below the, upper surface of the bed plate a sufficient distance to provide space between the lower surface of the roller C and these bars for the type form support H,- and the type-form K. The support H is a rectangular plate arranged in a horizontal position and supported by said bars 72 It is slightly narrower than the space between the side bars inclined in the same direction and are arranged parallel with each other, and the supporting plate H is provided with notches [L1 having surfaces k adapted to contact with the inclined surfaces 6 of said projections and thereby support the plate H in horizontal position. As thus arranged the plate H is supported at four points, one adjacent to each corner thereof, and the plate is thereby held in parallel relation to the tracks D upon which the roller C moves back and forth. The plate H is adapted to support the type form K which is composed of a rectangular chase is adapted to receive and hold the printing type Z62. The plate H, together with the form K, is capable of being adjusted vertically or from and toward the path of the roller C by being shifted transversely of the machine on the inclined surfaces 6 and I provide means whereby this plate may be readily and delicately adjusted transversely of the machine and thus raised and lowered the desired amount to accurately adjust the amount of pressure which shall be transmitted to the type form by the roll C. Upon the forward side of the machine I provide an adjusting screw h which is threaded through a suitable opening in the front side bar 6 and is arranged centrally of the machine. It is at such a height that when it is inserted in position its inner end contacts with the adjacent or forward edge h of the plate H. For the purpose of holding this plate in contact with the point of the screw, I provide compression springs k Which I insert between the rear edge of the plate and the rear longitudinal bar 6 In the form shown in the drawings, these springs 72, are cylindrical in form and the rear edge of the plate is provided with openings to receive these springs whereby the springs are held in position. I provide two of these springs, one adjacent to each end of the plate, and consequently as the screw h is arranged to contact with the middle portion of the plate, the plate is maintained in parallel relation to the frame of the machine when it is adjusted transversely of the machine by means of the screw 72, and against the resistance of the springs M. For the purpose of preventing any possible movement of the plate out of its true alinement, I provide a vertical V-groove h in the forward edge of the plate adapted to receive the inner end of the adjusting screw 72. This groove not only prevents the plate from being misadjusted, but also permits the rise and fall of the plate in relation to the point of the screw. I make the angle or inclination of the inclined surfaces 6 relatively slight for the purpose of increasing the delicacy of adjustment of the plate H. Once the plate H, with the type form, has been adjusted vertically to produce the desired amount of pressure, and which in turn determines the impression, the type form may be secured in its position between the longitudinal bars 6 by means of clamping screws 6 which I provide in the front bar 5 and adapted to project into contact with the forward edge of the chase and force the chase against the rear bar 6 To stop the roller C at the ends of its movement on the bed plate B, I provide a pair of curved stops 0 arranged at each end of the bed plate pivoted to the side bars of the bed plate B upon pivots 0* and projecting above the bed plate into the path of the roll. At each end of the machine I arrange a horizontal shaft m upon which I mount the several inking ribbons m These shafts are rotatably mounted in the bars 5 and are each provided with a ratchet wheel at mounted on the forward end thereof, and the forward levers c are each provided with a dog 0 adapted to contact with the adjacent ratchet wheel m and rotate its shaft m Only one of the dogs is arranged to be in operative relation at a time so that the ribbons can be moved in one direction, and when they reach the limit of movement in this direction the two dogs are reversed and the ribbon is moved back. The upper curved ends 0 of the levers c are held against the movement of the roller C by means of tension springs c which serve to hold the lower ends 0 of the levers 0 depressed, and I arrange limit stops 0 upon the forward bar 6 so that the levers 0 are normally held in definite relation to the roller C, and each time that the roller reaches the end of its movement in either direction, it operates the levers 0 and the ribbons are moved forward one notch for each complete movement back and forth of the roller C, through the medium of the dog 0 which is in operative position. The ribbons m are carried on spools m which are maintained in proper position upon the shafts m by means of a pin m arranged at one end of the shaft and an adjustable nut m arranged at the other end of the shaft. This construction permits the clamping of the spools m between the pin and the nut, and the spools are thereby made to rotate with the shafts and properly operate the ribbons. The ribbons are arranged to be drawn over the upper surface of the form and thereby impart their ink to the paper through the medium of the pressure applied thereto by means of the printing or pressure roll G.
It will be understood that the inclined surfaces 6 of the projections b and k of the supporting plate H are accurately machined, so that when the plate H is placed in position its upper surface will be parallel with the plane developed bythe undersurface of the roll as it moves back and forth, and further the adjustment of this plate transversely of the machine always maintains this perfect parallel relation to the pressure roll so that once the machine has been constructed the pressure of the roll will be evenly distributed over the en tire surface of the plate and it only remains to adjust the plate vertically by the delicate adjustment provided to produce the desired intensity or depth of impression upon the paper.
As many modifications of my invention will be readily suggested to one skilled in the art, I do not limit or confine my invention to the specific structures herein shown and described.
I claim 1. In a duplicating machine of the kind described, a pressure roll movable back and forth on the machine, a type form supporting plate arranged beneath the path of the roll and adjustable vertically from and toward the roll, said plate being supported upon two parallel inclined surfaces, one adjacent to the forward edge, and one adjacent to the rear edge, two spaced springs at one edge of the plate, holding it at one limit of its movement and a centrally arranged adjusting screw carried by the machine adapted to contact with the middle portion of the opposite edge of the plate for the purpose of adjusting the plate transversely of the machine upon said inclined surfaces and against said springs for the purpose of raising and lowering the plate relatively to the vpath of the pressure roll.
