SPIRIT-LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
Application filed May 14, 1912. Serial No. 697,235.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. FEDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spirit-Levels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plumb rules used for brick layers and other artisans and the object of the invention is to provide a sectional device of this character whereby the parts may be disconnected from one another so as to be conveniently carried from one point to another in the kit sack or other tool holder.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plumb rule. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the meeting ends of two sections.
In the specific embodiment of the invention, as illustrated herein, the rule comprises preferably three sections 1, 2 and 3, the first and last comprising the end sections and the intermediate one the middle section. The end sections 1 and 3 are both constructed with longitudinally extending tapered projections 4 having longitudinal grooves 5 formed between their sides and having the bottom wall thereof tapered in parallelism to the taper of the projection. The intermediate section is provided with inwardly tapered recesses 6 having ribs 7 in their center which taper in accordance with the taper of the recesses and which are adapted to receive and snugly fit the projections 4. Each section is provided with a level glass 8, 9 and 10, as shown, the intermediate section 2 having a glass arranged in line with the longitudinal plane of the rule for level work and the glasses 8 and 10 arranged transversely of the rule for plumb work.
In order to hold the sections together, the section 2 is provided with spring fingers 11 which are provided with pins 12 on their outer ends adapted to engage in apertures 13 formed in the outer sections. In order to guide the pins which are provided, as is shown, with beveled ends into the aperture 13, inclined guide ways 14 are provided which assure proper engagement of the pins with the apertures. The apertures and the spring fingers are arranged to one side of the transverse center of the rule so that the ends can not be interchanged upon the center piece. This insures accuracy in the alinement of parts and prevents any inaccurate work which otherwise might occur were the fasteners arranged in the center and the end members permitted to be interchangeably connected to the center member.
IVhat is claimed is A plumb rule comprising a plurality of elongated rectangular sections, one of said sections having an inwardly extending tapered socket in one of its ends, centrally arranged ribs projecting inwardly from the opposite walls of the sockets, the other of said sections having a longitudinally extending tapered projection adapted to fit within the socket of the first section and being provided with grooves for the reception of the said ribs, one of the said sections being pro vided in one of its longitudinal faces with a recess adjacent to one end thereof, the said recess being arranged in laterally spaced relation to the longitudinal center line of the said face and parallel thereto, the said section being provided further with a longitudinal groove communicating with the said recess and leading outwardly therefrom through the adjacent end of the section, and
a spring finger carried by the other section for sliding engagement within the said groove when the sections are in alinement and for locking engagement within the recess.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
