HOUSEHOLD CAN-SEALER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
Application filed. July 20, 1914. Serial No. 852,130.
7 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPri Barman, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Household Can-Sealers, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved household can sealer, and consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and specifically designated in the appended claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved household can sealer, which will be simple and inexpensive. and capable of quickly and uniformly applying sealing wax to the cans or other receptacles in sealing the same.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved household can sealer, and Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: 3 indicates a suitable base, from which arises opposite vertical bars 4 and 5 of the frame. The horizontal bar 6 connects the upper end of the said vertical bar" 4 to the opposite vertical bar 5.
7 indicates a revoluble can holder which is provided in its upper surface with a recess 8 for receiving the lower end of the can or jar 9 to be sealed, for the purpose of holding the can or jar in proper position during the sealing process. The vertical flange 10 forms the outer wall of said recess. A hand lever 11 has one of its ends pivoted at 12 to the vertical extension 13 of the same vertical frame bar 5. A plunger 14 has its upper end pivoted at 15 to the said hand lever 11 and extends downwardly through a suitable guide opening 16 in the said horizontal bar 6. Fixed upon the lower end of said plunger 14 is a sealing disk 17, which is adapted to perform the two-fold function ofsecurely pressing the can or jar cap 18 in position upon the upper end of the can or iar 9, and of acting as a mold for the sealing wax during the operation of pouring said wax. A weighted pawl 19 has its upper end loosely pivoted at 20 to the said hand lever, and the lower end of said pawl is-provided with a hook 21 which engages beneath a projection 22 on the said vertical frame bar 4 to securely lock said hand lever in its depressed position.
23 indicates a suitable weight formed upon 01' secured to the said pawl 19, for the purpose of urging said hook 21 into contact with said projection 22. Said weight 23 also forms a trigger or finger hold whereby the said pawl may be retracted. The free end of said hand lever 11 is preferably provided with a downwardly curved handle portion 24, located conveniently adjacent to the said trigger 23 of the said pawl. Secured to one side of the said vertical frame bar 5 at a point above the plane in which the said disk 17 is located is a semi-circular I ladle holding frame 25.
26 indicates a suitable ladle, which is provided with the usual spout 27 and opposite trunnions 28. The said trunnions 28 engage suitable bearings 29 formed in the said ladle holding frame, to permit said ladle to be tipped in pouring the heated wax therefrom. A suitable handle 30 is applied to one of said trunnions.
31 indicates a common gas burner for heating the said ladle while it is supported by the said ladle-holding frame 25. gas being supplied to the said burner through a suitable hose 32.
33 indicates a coil spring placed upon said plunger 14 so that the lower end of said spring will rest upon the said horizontal frame bar 6. The upper end of said spring bears against a transverse pin 34 passed through an aperture in the said plunger.
35 indicates a common swivel bearing, by means of which the said disk 17 may rotate upon the lower end of said plunger.
36 indicates a common pin proiecting upwardly from the said base 3 and engaging a suitable axial bearing formed in the bottom of the said can holder 7, whereby said can holder may be rotated upon said pin 36.
The operation is as follows: A suitable quantity of sealing wax is placed within said ladle 25 and heated by the gas burner 31, or if no gas is at hand the said ladle may be removed from the said ladle holding frame 25 and heated by any other means. Then the can or jar 9 is placed upon the can holder 7 and the cap 18 is placed over the can mouth. and then the disk 17 is brought down forcibly upon the said cap by depressing the free end of said hand lever 11 to the position in which it is shown, thereby compressing the said spring 83. This operation will firmly hold the said cap 18 in position 7 upon the can or jar 9 while the melted wax is being poured from the said ladle 26, which operation is of course performed by properly tilting said ladle by means of its handle 30. During the pouring of the melted wax the can 9 should be slowly rotated in order that the melted wax will be properly distributed upon the cap 18 and the top of the can or jar the said disk 17 and can holder 7 swiveling upon their bearings during such operation. Aftersealing a can same may be released by retracting the said pawl 19 when the said spring 33 will force upwardly the hand lever 11, the plunger 14 and the disk 17.
I claim:
1. The improved household can sealer, comprising a base, vertical frame bars mounted on said base, a can holder rotatably mounted upon said base, a handle lever pivoted at one end to one of said frame bars, a plunger having its upper end pivotally connected to said hand lever, a suitable guide for said plunger, a spring for elevating said plunger, a sealing disk rotatably connected to the lower end of said plunger, and a pawl pivotally connected to said hand lever and provided with a hook for automatically engaging a projection on one of said frame bars when said lever is depressed.
2. In a household can-sealing machine, Z the combination with the machine-frame of a support for the cans while being sealed, and a ladle-holding frame pro ect1ng horizontally from the said machine-frame at a 7 ADoL PH BEPLER. Witnesses:
