To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SIMEON S. JAoKsoN, a subject of Great Britain, residing at Headville, Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Weft- Parters for Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
@ne portion of the invention provides for locating the fixed and movable weftparting members at the inner side of the temple bar, between the latter and the adjacent end of the cap for the temple roll, so as to enable the weft-end to be parted at a point very close to the selvage of the fabric being woven. The fixed parter-member is clamped between the inner side of the bar and a vertical plate formed upon the inner end of the said cap, which may conveniently be efi'ected by meansof a transverse bolt serving to fasten the cap to the bar.
A feature of the invention consists in the employment of the said plate and the adjacent portion of the temple-bar or shank as guides for the lever constituting a carrier for the movable parting blade or blades.
Another feature of the invention consists in supporting the said lever by means of a rounded projection thereon working in an open concave seat or halfbearing. The lever rocks or swings upon the said seat, an ordinary pivot being dispensed with. The lever and the weft-parting means carried thereby are returned to their normal position by a spring that acts with a tendency to hold the lever to the said seat, and that also holds the lever from movement lengthwise. A. removable fixed stop upon the bar or shank acts to prevent the lever from leaving the seat. The removal of this fixed stop permits the lever to be readily removed and replaced.
In conformity with another feature of the invention, the movable parting member is constructed so that in the parting movement thereof it parts or cuts the weft-end contained within the notch or open eye which is provided for the reception of the weft-end to be parted, and in the return movement it closes the said eve against the entry of the running weft. This result is secured bv means of a gate with which the said parting member is provided.

having reference to the drawings, a temple-stand is represented at 1, the temple bar at Q, and 3 is the expanding spiral spring which encircles the rounded part of the said temple-bar. The said spring is confined as usual between the guide 4 at the front end of the temple-stand and the shoulder 5 of the temple-bar. It acts in well-known manner to hold the temple-bar and the temple-headv in their normal rearward position, and to return them to such position after they have been moved for ward through the contact of the advancing lay with the temple heel 7 projecting downward from the bar or shank 2. of which it is a part. The cap for the said roll is marked 10. It is r a separate piece. It is formed at its outer end. 2'. 6.. that adjacent the bar or shank 2, with a downwardlv extend ng plate 101, which is prolong d forward as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The cap is secured to the bar or shank 2 bv means of a screw 11 extending transversely through a hole in the bar or shank and screwing into a threaded hole that is tapped in the late 101. The souared enlarged head of the said screw is located at the outer side of the bar or shank. The roll 8 is mounted upon the stem of a long screw-pin 12, which occupies holes in the down-turned inner end of the cap, in the plate 10, and in the bar or shank. This screw-pin prevents the cap, and the fixed parting member presentlv to he described, from swinging around the pin 11.
At 13 is the notch. slit. or onen eve that its formed in the rear end of bar or shank 2, in line horizontally with the narrow horizontal opening between the rear edges of the cap and pod or trough, to permit the weft-end that is to be parted to pass for ward into position to be engaged by the movable parting member or members.
The fixed parting member 11 comprises a plate that intervenes between the plate 101 of the cap and the inner side of the bar or shank 2. The screw 11 and screw-'pin12 pass through holes in the said member, and it is held in place by being clamped tightly between said plate 101 and the bar or shank. The acting portion of member let projects rearward above the notch, slit or open eye 13, as shown best in Fig. 5.
At 15, 15, are two movable parting members, one thereof at either side of fixed member 14. The carrier-lever 16 for the said members 15, 15, is fitted between the bar or shank 2 and the forward portion of plate 101. The lever is confined in position between the inner surfaces of the bar or shank and the plate, which constitute lateral guides therefor. The parting members 15, 15, are attached to the upper arm of the carrierlever and extend rearward and downward therefrom. They are formed at their free extremities with upwardly and rearwardly facing'hooks 151, to coact with the under edge of the fixed member 14 in parting the weft-end. To insure proper cutting or parting of the weft-end as the hooks pass the acting edge of member 141 in the working stroke of the members 15, 15, the latter are formed of elastic material, and are bent or set so as to bear with moderate pressure against the opposite surfaces of fixed member 14, so that in their movements they slide upon such surfaces. Toaccommodate the carrier-lever 16 and the members 15, 15, the adjacent sides of plate 101 and arm or shank 2 are cut away at front and rear of the screw 11, as shown in Fig. 2, to provide spaces in which such parts are received and in which they work.
As in my prior Letters Patent No. 981,859, dated Jan. 17, 1911, the movable parting members are shown herein arranged to be moved by the advancing stroke of the lay into position to receive the weft-end between their acting portions and that of the fixed member 14, and to be moved by a spring as the lay makes its rearward stroke, to part the weft-end through coacti'on with the said fixed member.
For the actuation of the lever 16 by the lav, the said lever is furnished with a heel 17. The lay in advancing encounters the said heel 17, and thereby rocks the said lever to depress the books 151 of the parting members 15, 15, below the acting edge of fixed member 14. before the lay engages the temple-heel 7 to drive the temple forward.
In the present instance the spring 18 by which the working movement of the parting members is produced is formed at 181 into a coil which fits upon a supporting stud 19 that projects from the outer side of the bar or shank 2. An upwardly-projecting arm 182 of the said spring rests aganist one side of the projecting head of the screw 11, the said head constituting an abutment from which the springreacts, To prevent the said arm 182 from slipping off the said head, the latter is circumferentially grooved at 111, Figs. 2 and 1, to receive the arm. The other arm of the spring extends forwardly and downwardly and is formed into a coil which is fitted upon a round stud 20 projecting outward from the lever 16. The spring acts to hold the stud 20 normally against the forward side of heel 7 of the temple, with parting- members 15, 15, in an elevated position as in Figs. 1, 3, 5.
For the pivotal mounting of the lever, it is formed with a rounded projection 161, Fig. 5, and an open concave'seat or halfbearing 21 is provided in a lateral projection formed on the'inner side of the bar or shank 2. The said projection fits said seat, and works therein as the lever is rocked. The seat being an open seat, the lever may be applied thereto by simply introducing the lever edgewise between plate 101 and bar or shank 2, and causing the projection to enter the seat. After the lever has been seated, the coil of the forwardly extending arm of the spring 18 is to be engaged with stud 20. The action of the spring will tend to cause projection 161 to remain in the seat. prevent the lever from being thrownout of the seat, the fixed stop 22 is provided. Such stop is constituted by the inwardly-projecting head of a screw set in the bar or shank 2 Its position is at the front of:the forward edge of the lever, so that when the lever and parting members 15, 15, are thrown bv the spring 18 into their normal position shown in the drawings the said edge will make contact with the said stop, which may be lifted out of place. quently be returned to place readily, and after the screw-stop 22 has been restored to its place the parts will be in condition for further use.

In the normal position of the partingdevice with the hooks 151 elevated above the two coils thereof acts as a radius-arm in notch or open eye 13, the said hooks are shielded between the outer end of the cap 10 and the rear end of arm or shank 2, and by the rear end of the parting member 1 in such manner that the running filling cannot catch and loop upon the hooks.
In the advance of the lay the contact of some portion of the latter with the heel 17 rocks the lever 16 so as to carrv the movable parting-members or blades 1o, 15, downward until the hooks of such members or blades pass below the notch or open eye 13. During the intermediate portion of the dcscent or rise of the movable parting-members or blades the weft-end which requires to be parted or cut enters the said notch or open eye. As the lay recedes, relieving the heel of the lever 16 oi" pressure, the spring 18 operates the lever to swing it in the re verse direction, raising the movable partingmembers or blades, so that their hooks carry the weft-end against the under edge oi the fixed parting member 14 and part the weftend.
To prevent the running weft from being thrown into the notch or open eye 13 as the lay beats up and passes the front center, at which time the hooks are depressed, so as to be caught and parted by the hooks in their upward movement, I provide one or each of the movable parting-members or blades 15, 15, with a horn 152 opposing the hook 151, there being an opening 153, Fig. 5, between the points of the hook and horn to admit a weft-end into position above the hooks at the proper time. The movement of the movable parting-members or blades produced by the lay in beating-up carries the horn down across the notch or open eye 13 to act as a gate bridging the same. In such pos'tion 01" the gate it prevents the running filling from entering into the notch or open eye so as to be caught by the hooks as the latter rise during the receding movement of the lay. The horn or gate has an inclined or beveled inner edge. In the descent of the parting-members or blades 15, 15, such edge acts upon a filling-end that has entered he notch or open eye to draw such illingend forward within the notch or open eye into the path which subsequently is taken by the hook-shaped parting or cutting portions of the movable blades in their rising movement.
I claim as my invention 1. In weft-parter for looms, in combination, a loom-temple, a partingmember thereon, a lever pivoted upon said temple, having one or more cooperating parting members attached to its upper arm, extending rearward and downward therefrom, and furnished with rearwardly and upwardly facing hooks, said lever provided with adepending heel to receive the stroke of the advancing lay of a loom and also having a lateral stop-projection to engage with the temple,.said stroke operating the lever to open the parting-members to receive the said thread, and a spring operating to return the said stop-projection against the temple and move the hooks upward to part the thread against the opposing parting member.
2. A weft-parter for looms provided with cooperating parting-members, one of which in the parting movement parts the thread against the other and in the reverse movement closes the entrance between such parting-members, and operating means.
3. In a weit-par er for looms, in combination, a loom-temple, coopera ing partingmembers, one thereof: having a thread-enhook which in the parting movement parts the thread against the ot er member, and also having a gate opposite said hook, which in the reverse movement closes the entrance between the members, said hooked member adapted to be engaged by the ad vancing lay o1": loom to occasion said reverse movement, and a spring acting in the retreat of the lay to occasion the parting movement.

In combination, a templebar or shank, a temple-roll, removable cap th refor, a weft-parting member between the outer end of said cap and the inner sideof said bar or shank, means securing the cap to the bar or shank with the said member between them and clamping such member fixedly in place, and a cooperating movable parting member.

In combination, a temple-bar or shank, a temple-roll, a removable cap therefor having a vertical plate at its outer end, a wettparting member having its shank-portion between said plate and the inner side of the bar or shank, a transverse screw securing said plate, member, and bar or shank together, and a cooperating movable parting member.
8. In combination, a temple-bar or shank,
and also acts a temple-roll, a. removable cap therefor having a vertical plate at its outer end, a weftparting-member having its shank between said plate and the inner side of the bar or shank, a transverse screw securing said plate, member, and bar or shank together, a pin on which said temple-roll is mounted, occupying holes in the plate, the said weftparting member, and the said bar or shank,
and a cooperating movable parting member.
9. In combination, a loom-temple provided with an open concave seat or halfbearing, a lever-member provided with weftparting means and with a rounded pivotal portion which occupies said open seat or half-bearing, and a spring operating said lever-member and also holding its rounded pivotal portion in such open seat or halfbearing.
10. In combination, a loom-temple provided with an open concave seat or halfbearing, a lever-member provided with weft-parting means and with a rounded pivotal portion which occupies said open seat or half-bearing, and a spring operating said lever-member, holding its rounded pivotal portion in such open seat or half-bearing, and restraining the lever member from longitudinal movement.

In combination, a loom-temple provided with an open concave seat or halfbearing, a lever-member provided with weftparting means and with a rounded pivotal portion which occupies said open seat, a spring operating such lever-member and also holding its rounded pivotal portion in such open seat, and a removable stop determining the extent of the movement of the lever-member and preventing it from leaving the open seat.

In combination, a loom temple having a bar or shank, a temple-roll, and a templeroll cap provided with a plate at the outer end thereof, said temple also provided with an open seat or half-bearing, a lever-member furnished with weft-parting means and with a rounded pivotal portion which occupies said open seat or half-bearing, said lever-member working between the said plate and the bar or shank of the temple,
and a spring operating the lever-member V portion' in pies said open seat or half-bearing, with said lever-member confined between and guided by the said plate and the said bar or shank 14. In combination, a temple-bar or shank, a removable temple-roll cap provided with a vertical plate at the outer end thereof, one of said parts furnished with an open seat or half-bearing, a weftparting member between said plate and the bar or shank, means securing the cap to the bar or shank with the said member clamped between them, and a lever-member provided with weft-parting means and with a pivotal portion that occupies said open seat or halfbearing, with said lever-member guided laterally by the plate and bar or shank. In combination, a temple-bar or shank,a removable temple-roll cap provided with a vertical plate at the outer end thereof, one ofsaid parts furnished with an open seat or half-bearing, a weft-parting member between said plate and the bar or shank, means securing the cap to the bar or shank with the said member clamped between them, a lever-member, operated in one direction by the lay, provided with ,we'ft parting means and with a pivotal portion that occupies said open seat or half-bearing, with said lever-member guided laterally by the plate and bar or shank, and a spring holding the pivotal portion of the lever-member in the open seat or half bearing and operating said lever-member in the other direction. 7
