Description

E. A. SPEEGLE.
CURRENT MOTOR.
APPLIOATION FILED SEPT. 2, 1913.

CURRENTJVIOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar, $9, 31915.,
hpplicatiou filed September 2, 1913. Serial No. 787,695.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that l, EMANUEL A. Srnnercs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sawtelle, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful improvements in Current-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to current motors, and the principal object is to provide a current motor with feathering blades.
It is also an object to provide a current motor with blade frames which form sufiicient engagement with the supporting means to turn the latter.
It is a further object to provide it cur rent motor with an articulated blade, one of which-members is fined and secured to a. triangular-ly formed frame acting as the teeth on an endless belt or chain.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming herewith the application for Letters-Patent: Figure 1 is a longi' tudinal vertical section through a float showing the invention applied thereto. Fig.
2 is a transverse section on the line 2:2 of
Fig. 1, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the blade supporting means with a blade secured thereto.
More specifically in the drawings, 5 designates a float or scow, preferably of the divided form shown, or having a well formed therein transversely of whose longitudinal walls are journaled a pair of shafts l' and8 which are spaced the desired distance to ac commodate the movable blade carrying member and preferably with the journals 9 thereof placed in the side walls of the well 6 above the water line 10.-
Mounted upon the shafts are the frames .11 and 12 which are preferably formed of metallic disks which are keyed to the shafts and provide support for a plurality of radiair compressor 32.
' wheels and the links 15 will be in the grooves in the ends of the arms 14C.
Secured to the outer edge of the board 21 forming the blade 'or the edge adjacent the face 1% of the blade support is hinged a second board to form a blade 23, two hinges 25 connecting the two, and to limit the movement of this blade straps 2 6 are secured to a spacing bar 27 connecting the oppositely disposed ends of the face 19 so that when the blades are immersed in the water, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the blades 23 will assume a vertical position in the water while the blade portion 21 will be inclined slightly from the vertical so that a dish or cup eifect is presented to the current flowing as indicated by the arrows 28.
The shaft 7 is shown as disposed in the forward end of the float or that end disposed in the direction as opposed to the flow of the current in which the float is anchored, is preferably provided with a pinion 29 which is keyed to the shaft 7 and adapted to carry a chain 30 which leads'up to the platform or deck upon which is mounted the This air compressor is provided with a shaft 33 carrying a pinion 34 over which the chain 30 is carried and movement of the shaft 7 is effected by the current acting upon the blades which will revolve the shaft 33 and air is stored up and carried to any suitable tank for storage to perform useful. work. I
Any other mechanism may be connected directly to the shafts so that the energy ordinarily wasted by the movement of currents of water will be conserved and turned to beneficial results;
"What I claim is:
1. in current motor, comprising a float having a longitudinally disposed well therein, transversely, mounted shafts in said well, grooved radial arms disposed on said shafts, a belt engaging said arms adapted to be supported thereon in movable engagement, a plurality of blade carrying members carried on said belt adapted to engage said f arms and extend therebetween, blades ri 'dl carried thereby arranged at an mchna'tron to the belt on the inner side thereof, and blades 'hinged to the first-named 5 blades on the opposite-side of the belt in relation to said first-named blades, said hinged blades having limited movement in relation to the belt. I 2. A current motor, comprising a floating f0 member, revoluble means to support an endless belt thereon, triangular arms supported on said belt adapted to engage and revolve said supporting means, blade members secured to said triangular arms, hinged ble'les secured to said first mentioned blades, and 15 means to limit the movement of said hinged blades, whereby a rev oluble structure is provided to receive the impact of the current flowing by said floating member InWitness that I claim the foregoing I 5 have hereunto subscribed my name this 20th
