[WITED CARL GORQSA, 0F JAE/ A10 NEW MUFFLER.
Application filed June 16, 151-5.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, CARL Gonosn, citizen of Germany, residing at Jamaica, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Muiiiers, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in inufiiers for automobiles and more particularly to devices or'this class provided With a plurality of gas chambers that permit gas expansion and consequent cooling of the gases Within the muffler and that so automatically suppress the noise of the e haust. regulating; valve in the exhaust -.pipe is provided, however, for use when the engine is running at low speed.
1th the foregoing and other ob ects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement 01" parts to be hereinafter fully described in the followii g specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in Which- Figure 1 is a plan of an automobile errbodying my improved muffler. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the muffler. Fig) 3 is a section through one of the mufiier durns showing the plurality of gas chineers. section taken on line o3. Fin. is a section taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6-G of Fig. 5,
Like reference characters indicate correspending parts throughout the several news.
l is an automobile and a pipe lead g from the engine to the chamber iioin which pipes -land 5 lead, respective v, to the inuiiler sections or drums 6, '7. l thin each drum 6 or 7 a gas chamber 8 encircling the gas inlet pipe is provided and said chamber 8 is also provided with a battle plate 9 that also passes through the gas inlet pipe. The inlet pipe is'provided on one side of the baffle plate with plurality of apertures 10 leading into the chuznher 8 and said chamber at its end near the entrance of said gas inlet is provided with a plurality of apertures 11 lead into another gas chamber 12 disposed "With- Specificetion of Letters Patent.
reed by the oatiie plate provided with a plurality .conununicating with the chamber 12 gas inlet pige, which, beyond the on late is an outlet pipe, is provided with a plurality apertures 14 :onnnunicat rig with the chamber 8.
The pipes t or 5 are projected beyond their respective inuiller drums and there provided with an xhaust 15 which is pro vided with a regulator valve 15 operated by aspiring-pressed foot lever 17.
Ooeration: The exhaust coming from the engine enters one section oi the gas chamher 8 in the ini iler urin-n through the Inedium of the inlet pipe; since this, gas cannot pass beyond the hallie plate in said pipe or chzunher it flows out e tures ll chamber. 8 into ion hack into the section the plate Blaine i res 13, then through the apert the continuation of the gas pipe an u'o'i h the exhaust. The circulation s econ suiiicient to Inuhier for automobiles, an apertured gas-conveying pipe divided into sections con1pris' Pd a outlet pipe, a sect about said formed with aper- "u; with both sections of s chamber disposed chamber and hav- Li coinnion therewith outlet means for said ing an tape: 11 ed Wali c1: .L, 1N3 and r211. e-coini Olrcu.
