T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Vieron CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chatcolet, in the county of Kootenai and State of ldaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a speciiioation.
My invention relates to devices for setting saws and provides a device 0f this character which is particularly adapted for use on saws of the heavy cross out type.
Furthermore, it provides a device which is simple in construction, eflicient in operation and easy to manipulate.
A further feature of this saw set is the simple and effective means of varying the set of the saw.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, and annexed hereto: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a saw set constructed according to my invention, showing a saw in section, being set between the jaws, the jaws being in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the setting mechanism, showing the jaws in the released position. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the jaws in the position which they assume when the grips are squeezed together. Fig. 4 is a view of the adjustable means for varying the angular set of the saw in the device.
Throughout the separate views the same part is designated by the same reference character.
In former saw sets the adjusting means for varying the set of the saw were placed in such position that they were often interfered with in the operation of the device and in moving the set from tooth to tooth of the saw, thereby requiring careful manipulation on the part of the operator. However, with the means of adjustment provided herein,
there is no danger of the set being changed while the device is being operated.
The saw set illustrated and described herein, and constructed according to my invention, consists of the upper and lower handle levers l and 2, respectively, pivoted to the U-shaped jaw carrying members 3, as shown at 4 and 5. The said U-shaped member 3 has one bifuroated leg adapted to receive the said handle levers. A spring 6 is disposed between the levers 1 and 2 and bears against the adjacent sides so as to normally hold the levers in the opened position, said springs being retained in place by coiling it around the pin 7 mounted in the U-shaped member 3. The lower handle lever 2 is suitably recessed at 8 to receive the projection 9 of the setting member 10. The setting member 10 is provided with lug 11 reduced in size at its outward end 12. rlhe ends 11 12 pass into and through the opening 13 provided in the member 3.
Disposed between the shoulder 12 formed 0n the member 3 and the shoulder 11 formed on the member 11 is a spring 13. 13 holds the member 10 in the position shown in Fig. 2 until suiiicient pressure has been exerted on the handles 1 and 2 whereupon spring 13 will be compressed between shoulders 12 and 11.
The upper handle lever 1 has its working end 14 bent over at an angle to the handle portion so as to pinch the saw between itself and the inner face of the member 3 when the handles are squeezed together. A stop lug 15 is provided on the working end 14 of the lever and an abutment surface 16 is provided on the lever 2 so as to prevent the said handle portions from becoming separated too far.
rlihe outer leg of the U-shaped member 3 is extended upwardly at 17 and cored as shown at 18. This portion carries a threaded member 19 loosely journaled in 17 at 20 and 21, the threaded member carrying the adjusting member 22 having a threaded aperture therein and having a tail guide piece 23 adapted to run in a groove 24 formed in the rear wall of the upwardly eX- tending portion 17 of the member 3. rlhe adjusting member is adapted to move longitudinally of the threaded member by rotating the latter. A pin 25 is fastened in member 17 and projects into the annular groove 26 provided in member 19, said pin preventliOng endwise movement of the threaded mem- The operation of the saw set is as follows: The saw is placed in the opening of the U-shaped member 3, as shown in Fig. 1 so that the saw lies adjacent the near face of the outer leg of the U-shaped member 3 and adjacent the outer face of the working member 14. In order to set the teeth after the saw is thus positioned in the device, the adjusting member 22 is adjusted to bear against the surface of the saw at a suitable height to give the angularity desired to the teeth. The handle levers l and 2 are then clamped together and the saw is firmly pinched between the outer leg of the U- shaped member 3 and the working end 14 of the lever 1, while the further upward movement of the lever 2 throws the setting member 10 outward against the teeth of the saw and into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. This bends the teeth of the saw to the required angle. Upon releasing the handles 1 and 2 the spring 6 throws them back into their normal position and readjusts the various parts of the device in their respective positions for a repetition of the setting operation. rlhe spring 13 will return the setting member 10 back into the position shown in Fig. 2. It will be understood that various modiications in the form of device shown and described herein may be made without departing from the scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is 1. In a saw set, the combination with a U-shaped member comprising a bifurcated and a non-bifurcated leg, of two levers pivoted to one of the legs thereof, one of said levers comprising means for clamping the saw and theother comprising means for operating the setting means, means for setting the saw and adapted to be operated by the last mentioned lever, an extension carried by the non-bifurcated leg of said U- shaped member, and adjustable mea-ns for `adjusting the angle of the saw as positioned in the said saw set whereby the set of the teeth of the saw may be regulated, said adjusting meansbeing carried by the said extension, substantially as described.
2. In a saw set, the combination with a U-shaped member having one leg bifurcated and the other a non-bifurcated leg having AG'opies of this patent may ble obtained for a recess adapted to receive the saw teeth adjacent the bend, a lever pivoted to said bifurcated leg and having a jaw on one end thereof adapted to clamp the saw against the other leg of said bifurcated member, a second lever pivoted to said bifurcated leg and having a recess in the end adjacent the nonbifurcated leg, a setting member disposed within said recess and adapted to be moved against the tooth of the saw when said levers are squeezed together, and means ior adjusting the angle of the saw as positioned in the device.
3. In a saw set, the combination with a U-shaped member having one leg bifurcated and the other a non-bifurcated leg having an aperture therethrough adjacent the bended portion, a lever pivoted to said bifurcated leg and having a jaw on one end thereof adapted to clamp the saw against the other leg of said bifurcated member, a second lever pivoted to said bifurcated leg and having a recess in the end adjacent the nonbifurcated leg, a setting member having a reduced portion on the surface thereof, said setting member being adaptedto lie in the said recess and be moved toward said nonbifurcated leg to a position wherein said reduced portion enters said aperture when said levers are squeezed together, means for adjusting the angularity or' the saw as positioned in the device, and a spring disposed between said levers and serving to keep them normally separated.
