T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR MOAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Williamson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Stirrups; and I do hereby declare the following to be and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to stirrups of the type used on saddles and has special reference to a safety stirrup arranged to free the riders foot if he is thrown.

The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified stirrup of this kind wherein both the top and side of the stirrup will open out in the event of the rider being thrown so that the horse will be prevented from dragging the rider along the ground.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple stirrup of this character which may be readily manufactured at a low cost, the stirrup consisting of but two parts and those of simple nature.

With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a face View of the stirrup constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the stirrup showing the same in opened position. Fi 4 is a detailed sectional view through the latch members of the stirrup.

In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided an L-shaped main member indicated at 10. This member 10 comprises the inside and bottom of the stirrup and there is hinged to the extremity of the bottom an outside member 11 provided with a boss 12. To the upper end of the member 10 is pivotally connected a top piece 14 having a notch 15 in the underface of its free end portion and a resultant end lug 16 and within the notch and behind the lug is received the upper end of the member 11 which is beveled to fit the notch as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing. To hold the parts in this position, a book 17 is mounted upon the member 11 and takes over the member 14 thus holding the same securely in position. In order to assist the hook in retaining the member 14 looked a spring 18 is provided which is connected at one end to the member 11 and at the other end to the member 17. This member 17 is pivoted to the boss 12 as at 19 and has a forwardly extending arm 20 provided with a toe engaging piece 21. On the member 14 there is provided the usual loop 22 to receive the stirrup leather 23.

In operation as long as the riders foot is in its normal position in the stirrup the latter remains locked. -If the rider be thrown, however, his toe will contact with the toe piece 21 and thus move the hook 17 to released position. This will at once permit the falling away of the top and outside so that the device is caused to assume a position best shown in Fig. 3 thereby effectually freeing the riders foot. There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and of the character specified.

It will be obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and con struction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the inven tion to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as come properly within the scope claimed.
