' a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvements in Eyeleting- Machines; and l do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent inW Figure 1 a front view of an eyeleting machine constructed in accordance with my invention, showing, for the purpose of clearer illustration, the plunger roller and train of parts to the clutch in their shutting down position. rThis invention relates to an improvement in eyeleting machines, and while adapted for various purposes, is particularly designed for setting eyelets in corsets. As usually constructed corsets are provided at the back of each half with a row of eyelets, and it is desirable that the eyelets on one side of the back should correspond exactly in line with the eyelets on the back of the other half.
The object of this invention is to provide a machine by which the two halves of a corset are simultaneously fed and eyelets inserted in both sections at the same time. rlhe invention also includes means for automatically spacing the eyelets and automatically stopping the machine when the corset has passed through it; and the invention consists in a machine having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
1n describing my invention the construction will be best understood in connection with the various steps of the operation, the machine comprising a base 2 adapted to be supported on a suitable bench. Rising from the bed is a frame 4 with a forwardly pro forward end of the table.

This table is adapted to support the two halves of a corset with their rear edges arranged parallel and the lower edges of the corset are brought against a stop 9 adjustably mounted on the Above the table is a guide 10 having flanges 11 and 12 projecting down on opposite sides of the table and forming a narrow space between the guide and the table between which the corset is fed, the adjacent edges of the corset resting against a vertical guide 13. When the corset is in place its forward end projects beneath feed- rolls 14 and 15 which when the machine is at rest, are slightly lifted above the top of the table so as to permit the corset to be passed beneath them, and so that the upper edges of the corset or the ends of the corset where the first eyelets are to be located, will stand beneath punches 16 and 17 which are mounted in the lower ends of a slide 18 which is raised and lowered by a rock lever 19 the hub 2O of which is idly mounted on a shaft 21 supported by the frame and projecting rearwardly from the hub is a camlever 22 carrying a roller 23 actuated by a cam 24 on the driving shaft 25. Beneath the punches are lower sets 26 and 27 which are supported in a bracket 28 fixed to the lower end of a vertically movable slide 29 moving parallel with the slide 18 and actuated by a lever 30 having a hub 31 on the shaft 21 and a cam-arm 32 extending rearward and provided with a roller 33 actuated by a cam 34 also on the shaft 25 and tim-ed so that the lower sets rise at the proper time after the punch starts to descend. Eyelets are fed to the lower set from a hopper 37 of any approved form. lNhen the corset is in position for the first eyelets, a treadle is operated to move the lever 38 drawing down on a clutch pin 39 of a clutch in the form of a pulley 40 driven by a belt 41 from the source of power. rllhe withdrawal of the pin imparts motion to the shaft 25. rThe movement of the lever 38 moves a link 42`connected to a lever 43 on the rock shaft 44 on which is mounted a lift-lever 45 extending luider the head 46 of the stud 47 which carries the shaft 48 on which the rollers 14 and 15 are mounted, permitting springs 49 47 to depress the feed rollers 14 and 15 pressing the corset downward upon idle rollers 50 and 51 suitably supported with their peripheries in a plane at. the top of the table and so that the sections of the corset fed between them will be moved thereby. The step by step movement is imparted to the feed-rollers by -a pawl 52 engaging with a ratchet 53 fixed to the shaft 48, this pawl being carried by an arm 54 having a pin 55 engaged by a head 56 on a slide 57 mounted in the outer face of the varm 5 carrying a bearing-block 58 engaged by a long lever 59 pivoted at 60 and carrying at its rear end a roller 61 en: .gaging witha ianged cam 62 fastened to the pulley 40 on the shaft 25. The lever 59 is formed with a slot through which the pivot 60 extends, vand the pivot 60 enters a block 111 which is adjustable by a screw 112 fixed in aguide 113, so that by adjusting the pivot block the length of the throw of the lever 59 may be adjusted so as to regulate the movement of `the feed-rolls and space the eyelets.
The halves of the corset are placed in p0- lsition beneath the punches for the location of the firsteyelets, at which time the slides 18 and 29 come into operation so that the .punches V16a-nd 17 iirst pass through the sections of the corset to punch holes therein, and while the punches extend through the corset and into the eyelets delivered to the lower sets; the lower sets then rise forcing the eyelets up through the sections of the corsets against the upsetting shoulders 68-63 thereon to set the eyelets. It may here -be mentioned that the chutes 35 and 86 are provided with cut-offs 64-64 formed at the outer end of cut- ofil levers 65, 65,
pivoted at 66 one of which carries a roller 67 which is lifted as the corset passes beneath it so fas to open the chutes. When thecorset passes beyond the roller, the roller drops allowing the cut-offs to stop the feedi-ng of eyelets throughV the chutes. The eyelets 'are allowed to be fed `by the movement of two pairs of feed-fingers 68-68 and 69;(59. These feed-iingers are mounted on the end offa bracket 114 carrying a roller 115 inthe path of a cam 116 having a camgroove 117 'which oscillates the roller 115 0n its pivot 118 so as to give a slight movementito the=ends of the fingers which project into the vchutes and this movement is sufficient to allowjan eyelet to pass between eachmo'vement.` The cam 116 is mounted on the lower end of the slide 18 and consequently moves with that slide and `permits the feeding of one eyelet in each chute for each downward movement.
To `prevent the corset from being forced forwarduntil'after the eyelet setting operation takes place, ngers -70 carried by the slide 18-'are'adapted to engage at the completion -o-f the downward lmovement ofthe slide with nuts 71 'fixed to Vthe lower vend of a spring-actuated stop-pin 72 the head 7 3 of which is normally moved in the path of a reciprocating rod 74 connected with a ratchet arm 54 which ratchet arm is moved in one direction by a spring 75 and so that the pawl cannot move back to take a new grip on the ratchet 53, until the head 78 of the stop-pin 72 is moved down by the completion of the movement of the slide 18 the head 56 being an open head and consequently capable of moving away from the ratchet arm which is held in engagement with it. by the said spring 75 unless prevented by the stop pin 72. The halves of the corset are then fed step by step according to the distance between the eyelets, and as the corset passes onward it is caught by delivery rolls 76 and 76 co-acting with idler rolls 78-78 beneath them. The delivery rolls 76--76 are mounted upon an axle 79 in a sliding bearing 77 carrying a headed stud 80 which is adapted to be lifted by a lever 81 on a rock shaft 82 against the tension of springs 83. This rock shaft 82 carries an upwardly extending arm 84 carrying a pin 85 in the slotted end 86 of a slide 87 which is moved by a bell-crank lever 88 the other arm 89 of which is moved by a link 90 extending to a foot treadle, not shown. On the axle 79 of the delivery rolls is a ratchet 91 engaged by a pawl 92, like the pawl 52, mounted on a ratchet arm 93 moved by a closed head 94 on the slide 57 so that the feed-rolls and delivery-'rolls are moved simultaneously. Both movements of the delivery rolls are positively controlled by the slide 57 but the delivery rolls will continue to operate after the feed rolls have been separated regardless of whether the feed rolls are moved or not.
After the halves of the corset have passed the punching mechanism and the eyelets have been set, a plunger roller 95 at the end of a vertically 'movable plunger 96 drops down under the action of a spring 97 and this downward movement of the plunger rocks a forked arm 98 on a rock shaft 99 carrying along arm 100 which actuates a latch 101 permitting the nose 102 to drop into engagement with a constantly rocking arm 103 which is moved by a cam 104 on the shaft 25 causing the arm 103 to move the latch 101 and the Vslide 105 on which it is pivcted, which slide moves a clutch latch 107 to which it is connected by a link 106, said latch being provided with a latch finger 108 projecting over a vshoulder 109 of the spring clutch pin 39 so as to withdraw the linger 108 from the shoulder 109 allowing the clutch pin 39 under the action of its spring 110 to move upward and stop the driving of the machine. It is to be noted that the cam 104 has but one operating point so that'the machine lwill always stop in one position.
I claim 1. An eyeleting machine comprising a table arranged to support a piece of work, automatic feed rolls constructed and arranged to impart step by step movement to said work, a punch, a complementary set ar ranged forward of the feed rolls and constructed and arranged to be brought into operation while the feed rolls are at rest, and a pair of delivery rolls timed to move with the feed rolls.
2. An eyeleting machine comprising a table arranged to support two pieces of work the edges of which are parallel, automatic feed rolls constructed and arranged to impart step by step movement to said pieces, a pair of punches, and complementary sets arranged forward of the feed rolls and constructed and arranged to be brought into operation while the feed rolls are at rest, and a pair of delivery rolls timed to move with the feed rolls.
3. In an eyeleting machine, the combination with a table, of a pair of feed rolls adapted to automatically move two pieces of work forward over the table, two sets of eyeletsetting mechanism simultaneously operating for setting an eyelet in each piece, chutes for delivering eyelets to the eyeletsetting mechanisms, cut-offs in said chutes, and a lever connected with said cut-offs and normally held in its open position by the pieces passing through the machine whereby when the pieces have passed the end of said lever the lever will drop to move said cutoEs to block said chutes.
4. In an eyeleting machine, the combination with a table, of a pair of feed rolls, means for imparting intermittent movement to said feed rolls, a pair of eyelet-setting mechanisms in advance of the feed rolls, and means for operating said eyelet-setting mechanisms, chutes constructed and arranged to deliver eyelets beneath said setting mechanism, and a pair of fingers extending into each of said chutes and operated by the means for operating the punches whereby said fingers retire sufficiently to allow one eyelet to be fed between each setting operation.
5. In an eyeleting machine, the combination with a table adapted to support two pieces of work in parallel position, means for advancing said pieces step by step, eyelet-setting mechanisms adapted to set eyelets in said pieces, delivery rolls for moving said pieces, a vertically arranged plunger bearing upon the pieces being fed and constructed and arranged to drop down after the work has passed thereunder, a latch released by said plunger, and a clutch mechanism moved by said latch whereby the operation of the machine is arrested.
6. In an eyeleting machine, the combination with a table, a pair of feed rolls adapt ed to move two pieces of work in parallel motion over said table, delivery rolls for advancing the said pieces, eyelet-setting mechanism between the feed and delivery rolls and adapted to simultaneously set an eyelet in each piece, a slide constructed and arranged to operate said feed and delivery rolls, and means for cutting out the movement of the feed rolls without stopping the movement of the delivery rolls.
7. In an eyeleting machine, the combination with a table, of a pair of feed rolls adapted to advance two pieces of work in parallel motion over said table, eyelet-setting mechanisms in advance of the feed rolls and adapted to simultaneously set an eyelet in each piece, means for imparting step by step movement to the feed rolls, and a stop operated by the downward movement of the setting mechanisms and constructed and arranged to arrest the movement of the feed rolls until the punching operation is completed.
