AIR-HEATER. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Application filed June 28, 1913. Serial No. 776,254.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK KUHN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to air heaters, being more particularly designed for use in connection with electrical heating units. In the construction of such heaters it is desirable to confine the heaters within relatively small space dimensions; also to protect the units from injury and to provide sufficient heating surface to quickly heat the air. Heretofore constructions have been made in which heating units are arranged within an outer casing having ingress openings for the air at the bottom thereof, and a grated top which protects the units but permits the escape of the heated air. It has been found, however, that frequently some article, such as a cloth, is laid upon the grated surface, and by its interference with the circulation of the air, has caused the rise of temperature to a dangerous point.
It is the primary object of the present invention to avoid this danger by providing a construction of grated top for the heater casing, which will permit the free escape of the air even where the larger part of the grated surface is covered.
To this end the invention comprises the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a cross section through a portion of the heater casing, showing the grated top of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of portions of the grating detached.
A is a casing preferably formed of sheet metal, within which electric heaters (not shown) are arranged.
B is a grated top for the casing A engaging the same by a bead or flange C. The openings in this grating are sufiicient when unobstructed for the escape of heated air, but if any considerable portions of these openings were to be closed, there would be an objectionable, if not dangerous, rise in temperature. To avoid such a result, a second grated top D is arranged above the grating B and is spaced therefrom, preferably by providing upwardly-extending lugs or pins E on the member B, which engage sockets F on the member D. The member D is provided withopenings equal in area to those in the member B, and consequently the heated air will normally pass in an upward direction through both of the gratings. The member D is, however, of greater extent than the member B, so as to provide lateral air passages, which will remain unobstructed-even where the apertures in the grating are covered. Preferably the member D is provided with flanges G, which curve downward, leaving spaces H between their lower edges and the sides of the casing A sutlicient for the escape of the heated air. Thus, even where a cloth is laid over the top of the grating D and hangs down over the side of the casing, it will be held by the flange G sufliciently spaced from the side to prevent obstruction of the exit passages H for the heated air.
The parts may be mechahically secured to each other by any suitable means, such as bolts I passing through alined apertures J and K in the two gratings and extending to the base of the casing (not shown).
What I claim as my invention is: I 1. The combination with a casing for con taining an air heater, of a grated top for said casing having upwardly-extending lugs or pins, a super-grating supported upon said upwardly-projecting lugs or pins and provided with sockets for engaging the same, said super-grating having downturned marginal flanges spaced from the edges of said top, and tie-bolts for securing the super-grating in place, said bolts passing through apertures in the grated top. 2. The combination with a casing for containing an air heater, of a grated top member, and a super-grating member, one of said members being provided with lugs or pins and the other member with sockets for securing said pins, whereby the super- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature grating is supported at a distance above the in presence of two Witnesses.
