Be it known that I, CLAUD HENRY, a citi- Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Telegraph Apparatus, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in telegraph apparatus and has particular application to a telegraph receiving instrument.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a telegraph receiving instrument which will be in the nature of a combined sounder and tape marking device and whereby the tape will be marked in accordance with the operation of the sounder thereby producing a permanent record of the messages received.
It is also my pur ose to provide a receiving instrument of t e class described which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability and which may be installed and maintained at a minimum expense.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a top plan view of a telegraph instrument constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the control device for the motor.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a base board constructed of any suitable material and of any desired outline. Suitably secured to the base board 1 adjacent to one end thereof is an appropriate form of telegraph sounder 2 connected in the line in the usual manner. Upstanding from the base 1 adjacent to one side of the sounder is a post 3 slidably receiving a sleeve 4 depending from the under surface of a table 5. Interposed between the upper end of the post 3 and the bottom of the table 5 is a coiled expansion spring 6 forming a resilient support for the table. and has pivotally connected thereto an arm 8 carrying at its outer end a yoke 9 disposed above the table 5. YA leaf spring 8 hasone end fastened to the standard 7 and the opposite end bearing upon the under edge of the arm 8, such spring holding the arm 8 normally elevated. v Pivotally connected to the limbs of the yoke 9 and disposed between the same is a self-feeding or fountain pen 10 having'the pointed end thereof disposed in proximity to the upper surface of the table. Projecting upwardly from the upper extremity of the pen is a shank 11, while formed integral with the adjacent end of the armature of the sounder and ofiset upwardly therefrom is an arm 12 formed with an aperture 13, receiving the upper end of the shank 11. Encircling the shank 11 is a coiled expansion spring 14 having thelower end thereof abuttingtheshoulder formed at the juncture of the shank with the pen and surface of the arm 12.
Projecting upwardly from the base 1 upon 1 one side of the table 5 and spaced apart in parallelism are standards 15, 15 carrying adjustable tension rollers 16, 16, while uprising from the base 1 in advance of the standards 15, 15 are bearings 17, 17 in which is rotatably mounted a drum 18 carrying a tape 25. At the opposite side of the table 5 is arranged a spring motor 19 connected with a winding drum 2O alining with the tape carrying drum 18, such motor being pro vided with a suitable form of governor 21.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of my invention will be readily apparent. In practice, the tape t is passed through the tension rollers 16 over the table 5 between the upper surface of the latter and the pen 10 and secured to the winding drum 20. The spring motor is now set in operation so that the tape is drawn across the table. In the downward movement of the sounding hame mer to produce the dots anddashes the arm 12 actuates the pen 10 downwardly so that the point thereof engages the traveling tape t whereby the dots and dashes are marked upon the tape in accordance with the operacontrol of an electrically operated releasing device 22 connected in the sounder circuit and normally holdingthe motor against operation, such releasing device being actuated to release the motor when the circuit through the sounder is closed.
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish' it tobe understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described'and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a telegraph receiver, the combination with a sounder, of a vertical standard disposed adjacent to one end of the armature of said sounder, an arm pivoted to said tion with a sounder, of a vertical standard disposed adjacent to one end of the armature of a said sounder, an. arm pivoted to; said 2 standard adjacent to the upper end thereof, a yoke on the outer end of said arm, a marking device pivotal-1y connected to the'limbs of said yoke and disposed between the same, the end of the armature of said sounder adjacent to said marking device being offset and formed with an aperture, a shank on:the upper end of said marking device project ing through said aperture, a spring: sur-' rounding said shank and forming a yield-Q ableconnection between the armature and marking device whereby the marking device will be operated in the operation. of the sounder, and means for feeding tape across the path of said marking device.
