l iMPRovsMEN'r IN BUReLAR-ALARMS.
The Schedulerefen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making par; of the same.
We, JOHN T. MYGATT and J omsl DOWNING, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain Ixnprovements'in Signal Apparatus forthe Detectiondof Burglars, of which the following is a specication.
Our inventionl relates to the combination andarrangement of gas-pipes and valves, connected with doors or Windows of buildings or safes in suchla manner that by opening said doors orwindows the usual night-light shall be extinguished and a colored light exhibited, whereby Watchmen or others understanding the arrangement may detect the 'designs of burglar-s. v
Figure 1 is a view of a safe or door partly open, showing the connections with the door and gas-pipes, embodying the' general principles of our invention'.
Figure 2 is a plan ofthe same.
A is a box representing a saie or room. v
B is the door, provided with projections Gon the inside ofthe door, with holes forthe connecting-hooks D, which hooks are attached tothe arms .E of the --valves in the gas-pipes. These pipes may be placedV under the floor, as represented in'the'acconipanying drawing, or in the window-casings or other localities, as the'case may require.
F is the ordinary service-pipe, towhich lthe nightburner is attached; and
G, the pipe for the colored or signal-light, which may be placed in any conspicuous position beyond the control of the burglar.
H is the main pipe connectingwith the servicev` pipes F and G, between the valves I and J.
If desired, the colored light may be dispensed with and the apparatus so arranged that the extinguish-r ment of the nightlightonly shallindicate thejdis tnrbance of the premises. Y y
On retiring at night the connecting-'hooks are attached to thedoor or window by entering' their points;-
iuto the holesV in the projecting piece `O,- when' the door is closed, which opensfthe valve I and partiallyv opens J, which allows `a lsuiicient quantity of gas to pass into the burnerfor a slight ignition. ,Boi-.h .bii'rn ers are then lighted, the signal-light having-ai coloredf shade and the night-light burning in thefordinaryv manner.
When'the door or window is opened it closes the valve I and extinguishes the night-light, and at the same time fully opens the valve J, which exhibits the colored orsignal-light, thereby indicating the presence of the burglar.' v Y I When the apparatus is designed to connect with the door or entrance of the building, an ,adjustablev connecting-projection O, substantially as and'for the n purpose hereinbefore set forth.
' JOHN T. MYGATT.
JOHN DOWNING.
