To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that LIHIRAM C. Hnrr, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Vegreville, in the Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Appliances; and I d o hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others Vskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
|This invention relates to improvements in draft appliances which are particularly adapted to be associated with harvesting machines, such as for instance, binders, reapers, etc.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a draft appliance for the purpose described by means of which a square corner may be readily turned.
Another object of the inventionis to pro-` vide a draft appliance of the character described of such construction as to permit of the draft element freely moving under the main tongue of the appliance during the turning movement to consequently prevent the draft element from sticking.
A further object of the invention is to provide a main tongue and a novel constructiony vof support therefor whereby the pressure exerted upon the tongue while the machine is traveling over rough ground will be concentrated upon the front end'thereof instead of in the center, as now exists in the tongues of present construction.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a lock of novel construction adapted to be associated with either or both of the double-trees of the draft element when it is desired to change the element from a four-horse evener to a two or three-horse evener.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a draft appliance for the purpose described which is composed of a minimum number of parts, is therefore simple in construction, and is cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various lchanges in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope ofthe claim may be resorted to with out departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the front end sill of any suitable harvesting machine, such as for instance, a grain binder, reaper, or the like. Secured adjacent the ends of the sill are outer attaching eyes 6 and 7 respectively, and also secured centrally to said sill is an intermediate eye 8.
My invention includes a main tongue A` which in this instance has its rear end pivotally connected tothe attaching eye 6.y The free end of the tongue slightly inclines inwardly and has rigid connection with'the forward end ofan inclined brace 9, the rear ranged tofreceive the forward end Vof the`h4`r main tongue A. 4An intermediatebrace 10 has its rear end pivotally connected to the intermediate attaching eye 3, and has its forward end secured within the channel iron brace 9 and also secured to the forward end of the main tongue A by any suitable means. Upper and lower cross braces 11 and 12 respectively are centrally secured to the tongue A and braces 9 and 10. It is to be observed in this connection that the tongue A together with the braces 9 and 10 are capable of'vertical swinging Inovements with respect to the end sill 5.
Formed on the forward end of the tongue A in advance of the braces 9 and 10 is an integral bearing 13. This bearing includes a pair of spaced horizontally disposed ears 14 14 which are formed with alined verticalopenings 15-15 My invention further comprises an extension tongue B which is composed of upper and lower sections 16 and 17 respectively, the lower face of the upper section 16 being disposed in the same plane as the lower face of the bearing 13. These sections are secured together by means of bolts 18 or other suitable fastening means. rThe upper section 16 is formed with a rearwardly extending perforated ear 19, which is disposed between the ears 14 of the beariing 13. The rear end of the lower section 17 extends beyond the rear end of the upper section 16, and is disposed against the lower face of said bearing 15 and is formed with an opening 17u which registers with the openings 15 of said bearing. Formed in the rear end of the underface of the lower section 17 is an angular recess 20.
1n order to support the extension tongue B and consequently the forward end of the main tongue A above the ground, have provided a fork 21, the legs 22-22 thereof terminating in upper boxes 23. Secured to these boxes are lower boxes 24-24, and journaled in Vsaid lower boxes are the respective ends of an axle 25. Centrally formed on said axle is a ground wheel 26 which includes the usual rim 27. This rim, however, is formed with a peripheral flange 28 which is disposed on one side of the rim for preventing slipping of the wheel when turning. The bight of the fork is formed with an upwardly extending angular head 29, and this head is disposed in the recess 2O of the lower section 17 of the extension tongue B. This head terminates in a spindle 30which is loosely mounted within the alined openings of the bearing 13 and extension tongue B so as to permit of horizontal swinging movements of said extension tongue B. A nut 31 is attached to the upper end of the stem 30 to prevent accidental displacement of the various parts.
Centrally formed in the abutting faces of the upper and lower sections 16 and 17 of the extension tongue B are opposed transverse recesses 32-33 respectively which conjointly form an opening for receiving the main4 evener bar 34 of the draft element. The top and bottom walls of the opening thus formed are laterally inclined so as to dispose the main evener bar 34 at an angle. rlhe main evener bar 34 is centrally formed with a vertical opening 35 which registers with an opening 36 formed in the lower section 17, and with a socket 37 formed in the upper section 16. A pivot pin 33 is loosely mounted within the openings 35 and 36 and the socket 37, and this pin is prevented from dropping out by means of a keeper 39 which is pivotally connected, as at 40, to the underface of the lower section 17.
The main evener bar 34 is formed with reduced ends 41-41 which are each formed with a plurality of spaced vertical openings 42. Each end 41 projects through a corresponding opening 43 formed in a spacing block 44, said block extending for some dis tance below the plane of the bar 34 and having a lower transverse opening 45 formed in its lower end. A vertical opening 46 is centrally formed in the block 44 and intersects the openings 43 and 45thereof. A coupling pin 47 projects through the opening 46 of the block 44 and through any one of the openings 42 ofthe bearing 34, depending of course upon the position of said block 44. It will thus be observed that by means of this construction, the blocks 44 may be each shifted longitudinally along the reduced end 41 of the main evener bar. Movably mounted for horizontal swinging movement within the opening 45 of each spacing block 44 is a double-tree 4S, said tree being centrally pivoted to the coupling pin 47. 1t will thus be observed that by means of the spacing block the double-trees 43 are disposed below the evener bar 34.
Associated with each double-tree 43 is a pair of swingle-trees 49-49, and each swingle-tree is connected to the respective end of a double-tree 43 by means of a double clevis 50. This clevis includes oppositelv projecting pairs of ears 51-51 and 5.2 respectively, said ears being connected centrally by means of a transverse web 5f The ears 51 are perforated, and are pivotally connected to the respective end of a doubletree by means of a bolt 54. The ears 52 are also perforated, and are respectively disposed in a plane higher than the ears 51, and
have pivotal connection with a respective swingle-tree 49 by means of a bolt 55.
Each swingle-tree 49 has its ends formed with transverse openings in which an eyebolt 56 is disposed, said bolt having a nut 57 associated with the free end. Loosely connected to the eye 56a of each bolt is a hook 58 which is formed from a single piece of stout wire and bent to form a lap link, the
end portions 59-59 thereof being disposed in overlapping and in spaced relation, one end portion terminating in an attaching eye 60 which is engageable with the eye 56a of the bolt 56.
Centrally secured upon the brace 9 by means of a bolt 61 is a bracket 62 which is formed with a vertical opening 63. A standard 64 has a reduced lower end 65 which is disposed within the opening 63, and a nut 66 is associated with the extreme lower end for securing said standard against accidental movement. The upper end of this standard is provided with any suitable rein-guide, which is designated as a whole by the reference numeral 67.
In the modied form of my invention, as illustrated in Figs. 14 and l5, I have provided a fork 21a and have disposed the same in longitudinal alinement with the machine. This fork has pivotal connection at its lower ends with a bolt 68 which is supported by ears 69-69 formed on an upper boxing 70. A lower boxing 71 is secured to the upper boxing by means of bolts 72, and these boxings, by means of said bolts, are clamped around an angular axle 25a,'said axle being supported by a pair of ground wheels 26a. It will thus be observed that in this modiiied forni, the axle 25a may be tilted laterally without aifecting'the tongue A.
A draft pole 78 is pivotally connected at its rear end by means of a bolt to the front end of the extension tongue B, and this pole is capable of vertical swinging movements Vwith relation to the extension tongue.
When it is desired to use the appliance as a three-horse evener, I employ an S-shaped locking element 74. This element has one bill 74a engageable over the front edge of the stubble end of the main evener bar 34, and has its other bill 7 b engageable under the inner end of the respective doubletree 48. The spacing block 44 is shifted outward along the reduced end 41 of said double-tree 48 and secured in its adjusted position by means of the coupling pin 47. By this arrangement, the single horse which is on the stubble side will be given a leverage equal to the strength of the two horses on the grain side. When, however, it is desired to use the appliance as a four-horse evener, the double-trees are not shifted along the main evener bar.
In operation, let it be presumed that the left hand side of the machine is the grain side and the right hand side is the stubble side. When it is desired to turn a square corner, the extension tongue B will be swung around to the left, and on account of the inclined opening formed by the recesses 32 and 33 of the extension tongue B, the near side of the draft element will be disposed ina plane lower than the ofi' side thereof, so as to readily permit the near side of the element to freely swing under the brace 9. It will also be observed that by means of the spacing block 44, the double-trees 47 will be disposed below the plane of the main evener bar 34, and thereby permit of said doubletrees to freely swing under said main evener bar. It will furthermore be observed that by means of the particular construction of the double clevises 50, the sWingle-trees 49 are disposed in a plane intermediate the double-trees 48 and the main evener bar 44. As a result, the swingle-trees are capable of freely swinging between said double-trees and main evener bar without contacting with either thereof.
What is claimed is:
In a draft appliance, the combination with a front end sill; of a main tongue connected to said sill adjacent one end thereof, a brace connecting the free end of the tongue with the opposite end of the sill, said tongue and brace being arranged for vertical swinging movement, a bearing xed to the tongue and brace and extending vertically up the front ends of said tongue and brace,- an extension tongue secured to'said bearing for horizontal swinging movement, an evener carried by the extension tongue, and a draft pole pivoted to the extension tongue for vertical swinging movement.
