Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Car-Door Fastener, of which the following is a specication.
lThis invention relates to car door fasteners and relates particularly to door fasteners for stock cars.
As is generally well-known by persons familiar with the art, the doors of stock cars are not confined in guide grooves at their lower edges, in the manner common in box car construction, but are free to swing outwardly away from the sides of the car. This is for the reason that such guide grooves might become clogged with the feed and litter from the car and might obstruct or entirely prevent operation of the door particularly to close the same. In like manner the doors of stock cars are not usually provided with door stops, but are secured in position both against the side of the car and against sliding movement to open said door, by means of suitable fastening means which usually comprise hasps hinged to the sides of the car at both sides of the door opening and lfastening members coperating with said hasps secured directly to the door, one for each of said hasps.
One ob] ect of the invention is to provide a hasp which is reversible, that is which may be hinged to the side of the car at either side of the door opening and to provide means in connection therewith whereby said hasps, when swung back against the side of the car, will be secured in such position, thus preventing them from projecting outwardly away from the car so as to strike and be struck by passing objects.
A further object ofv the invention is to provide a locking pin and housing therefor of the type in which said locking pin can be inserted into its bearings in said housing and removed therefrom only through an opening in the rear side of said housing when said housing is detached from the car, said pin and housing being so constructed that when inserted into operative position in said housing, said pin will alwaysvbe maintained in alinement with said bearings in said housing so that it will always fall by gravity into locking position. To effect the foregoing objects, my improved fastener comprises the various features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring now to the drawings, A designates, as a whole, a fragmentary part of the body portion of a stock car which is 'of the usual type the sides of which consist of spaced boards or slats o; A designates the upright side frame member of the dooropening, which extends outwardly from the slats or boards a, the ends of which are secured to the inner sides thereof; and B des` ignates the car door, which is slidably connected `to the body of the car at the upperside of the door-opening by any usual or approved means, not shown, and which is adapted to overlie the outer side of the dooropening frame A.
vThe hasp designated as a whole, C, is of the type comprising a base plate l formedV on which are bearing bosses 2, and a pivoted leaf or strap 3 provided with pintles l fitted to the bearings in said bearing bosses 2. As shown, the base leaf l of the hasp is secured to the side of the door-opening frame member A by means of bolts 5 inserted through the ends and the rear edge thereof substan-v tially at its longitudinal center and to provide for engaging the pivoted hasp memberl 3 with the hasp lug on the door,vsaid pivoted hasp member is bent, substantially at right angles, so that the outer section Z thereof willV extend substantially parallel with the outer side of the door B. shown, the pintles 4 are formed integral Y with the hasp members 3 and to provide for assembling the parts of said hasp, the 'base' the bolt 6 which extends through overlapping lugs 8, formed thereon. Formed at the rear sides or" the adjacent ends of the bearing bosses 2 are recesses or notches 9, the front sides of which are inclined, as shown at 10, forming cam surfaces on the lower bearing bosses along which the pivoted hasp member or leal 3 will ride when it is turned pivotally, the relation being such that when said hasp leaf 3 is turned into locking position, the cam surface 10 on the lower bearing boss will operate to raise said hasp member to bring the slot in the end thereoill into register with the hasp lug on the locking member, presently to be described. The relation is such also that when said hasp member 3 is turned pivotally to open position it will ride downward along said cam surface 10 to the bottom of the recess or notch 9 and will be retained in such position by said cam surface until suilicient torce is applied thereto tending to turn the same pivotally into locking position to cause it to ride upsaid cam surface.
With the described construction, it is obvious that the base hasp member 1 is symmetrical on both sides of its transverse center line and is thereby rendered reversible so that it may be applied to either side of the door. As shown, the heads of the securing bolts 5 project outwardly7 into the path of the pinties l when said pintles fall, due to the movement o the hasp member 3 downwardly along the cam surtace 10 and, in order that said pintles may not strike against said bolts which would prevent the desired operation of the cam surface 10 the ends ot' said pintles are cut away, as shown at 11, see particularly Fig. 6, so that the ends oi said pintles will clear the heads of said bolts.
rl`he locking member, designated, as a whole, D, is secured to the outer side of the door B and consists of a base plate 12 adapted to be bolted or otherwise secured to said door, formed on the outer side ot' which is a housing 13 the upper and lower ends of which are closed by walls 14; and 15 which are respectively provided with bearing openings 16 and 17 for the locking pin 18. Formed on said base plate 12 below the lower wall 15 or' said housing 13 is the hasp lug 19 which is adapted to extend through the slot in the end of the pivoted hasp member 3 when said hasp member is turned into locking position and which is provided with a bearing 2O for the locking pin 18 which is in alinement with thebearings 16 andv 17.
Endwise movement of the locking pin 1S is limited by means of a llange or collar 21 thereon, which is adapted to strike the hasp lug 19 when said pin is at the lower end of its movement, that is 1n locking position, and a shoulder 22 formed on the inner side of the housing 13 adjacent to its upper end. the relation being such that said stop flange or collar 21 will strike the stop shoulder 22 before said locking pin passes out of engage ment with its bearing 17 in the lower wall 15 of said housing. Also, to permit the stop flange or collar 21 on said locking pin to pass the lower wall 15 orn said housing, the bearing 17 therein is enlarged at its iront side so as to permit the passage therethrough of said stop llange or collar. Said locking pin is adapted to be operated by means of a hook 23 on its upper end which projects rontward beyond the front side ot the housing 13 in position to be conveniently engaged by a linger for raising said locking pin. fis shown, the front side ot the upper bearing 16 for the locking pin 18 is formed by the inner side or edge ot' the stop shoulder 22, which is located some distance below the upper end wall 141- olf the housing 13 so that said bearing 16 will form a hole or opening in the upper end of said housing which opens through both the top wall and the front side of said housing, the object ot which ll will now describe. The locking pin 18 is adapted to be inserted into its bearings and removed therefrom through an opening 24 formed in the base plate 12, which extends from the lower end wall 15 ot the housing 13 to within a short distance of the upper end ot said housing, the relation being such as to permit the upper end 23 of said locking pin to be inserted through the bearings 15 in the upper end wall of said housing when said pin is turned one-half around, that is so that said hook 23 will extend rearwardly over the upper end of the housing 13, as shown in Fig. 4c of the drawings. Also, when turned one-halt' around in the manner described, the stop flange 21 thereon will `rbe disposed on the side of the pin away trom the stop shoulder 22, which will permit said locking pin to be raised until the stop ilange 21 thereon strikes the upper end wall 14 of the housing 13, in which position the lower end of said locking pin will be above the lower end wall 15 of said housing, which will permit the lower end olf said locking pin to be moved into alinement with its bearings 17 and 20 in the lewer housing wall 15 and in the hasp lug 19, respectively. Also, the locking pin bearings 16 and 17 are of such size and shape that said locking pin 18 may be turned axially therein to cause the hook end 23 thereof to project frontward in position for operation. With the described construction it is obvious that said locking pin 18 having been inserted into its bearings in the housing 13 and said housing secured to the car door, said pin cannot be again removed without lirst disconnecting the housing from the car door. As shown, the base plate 12 of said locking member D is adaptlat the rear side of the housingvl, said contracted portion 27 Vbeing suiiiciently wide to receive the body of the bolt 26 but narrower than the diameterofthe head ofthe bolt so that the bolt head will extend across said opening 27 and will bear upon the inner side of said base plate at both sides of said opening.
'I claim 1. A carV door fastener comprising a hinged hasp comprising a base member and a pivoted member, said base member being provided with a notch adapted for engagement by the pivoted hasp member when turned Vinto fully open position and to maintain said pivoted hasp member in such position, and with a cam surface which connects the bottom of said notch with the operative seat of said pivoted hasp member on said base member and a locking member comprising a base plate, a locking pin, spaced projections on said base plate provided with bearings for said locking pin, said base plate being provided with an opening to permit said locking pin to be inserted into andwithdrawn from its bearings', and coperating stops on said locking pin and the upper bearing projection, the relation being such that said stops will prevent withdrawal of said locking pin from its bearing in the lower bearing projection when said locking pin is in operative position and will permit such withdrawal when said pin is turned axially, and a hasp lug on the base plate of said locking member provided with an opening to receive the lower end of the locking pin, substantially as described.
2. A car door fastener comprising a hinged hasp comprising a base member and a pivoted member, said base member being provided with a notch adapted for engagement by the pivoted hasp member when in fully open position and to maintain said pivoted member in such position and a cam surface connecting the bottom of said notch with the operative seat'of said pivoted hasp member on said base member, and a locking member comprising'a base plate, a hollow housing on the front side of said base plate, a locking pin, said base plate provided with an opening which communicates with the hollow interior of said housing and said housing being provided in its ends with bearings for said locking pin, said locking pin being adapted to be inserted into and withdrawn from its bearings through the opening in said base plate, and coperating stops on said locking pin and housing, the relation being such that said stops will prelvent withdrawal of said locking pin from its bearing in the lower end of the housing when said locking pin is in operative position and will permit such withdrawal when said pin is turned axially, but'will prevent disengagement of said locking pin from its upper bearing except through the opening in the base plate of said locking member, and a hasp lug on said locking member provided with an opening to receive the lower end of the locking pin, substantially as described.

A car door fastener comprising a reversible hinged hasp comprising a base member and a pivoted member, bearing lugs on said base member provided with notches at the rear sides of their adjacent ends the lower of which is adapted for engagement by the pivoted `hasp member when turned into fullyv open position and to maintain said pivoted hasp member Vin such position, and with cam surfaces which connectthe bottoms of said notches with theY operative seats of said pivoted hasp member on the adjacent ends of said bearing lugs, and a locking member comprising a base plate, a hollow housing on the front side of said base plate, a locking pin, said base 'plate being provided with an opening which communicates with the hollow interior of said housing and said housing being provided in its ends with bearings for said locking pin, said locking pin being adapted to be inserted into its bearings through the opening in ,said base plate,`and coperating stops on said locking pin and housing,the relation being such that said stops will prevent withdrawal of said locking pin from its bearings in the lower end of the housing when said locking pin is in operative position and will permit such withdrawal when said pin is turned axially but will prevent disengagement of said locking pin from its upper bearing except through the opening in the base plate of said locking member, and a hasp lug on said locking member provided with an opening to receive the lower end of the locking pin, substantially as described.

A hinged hasp for a car door fastener comprising a base member and a pivoted member, said base member being provided with a notch adapted for engagement by the pivoted hasp member when in fully open position and to maintain said pivoted hasp member in such position, and with a camv surface which connects the bottom of said notch with the operative seat of said piv-A oted hasp member on said base member, substantially as described.
5. A hinged hasp for a car door fastener comprising a reversible base member and a pivoted member, and bearing lugs on said base member provided with notches at the rear sides of their adjacent ends, the lower of which is adapted for engagement by the iso sib
pivoted hasp member when in fully open position and to maintain said pivoted hasp member in such position and with cam surfaces which connect the bottoms of said notches with the operative seats of said pivoted hasp member on the adjacent ends of said bearing lugs, substantially as described.
6. A locking member` for a car door astener comprising a base plate, a locking pin, spaced projections on said base plate provided with bearings for said locking pin, said base plate being provided with an opening through which said locking pin is adapted to be inserted into and removed from its bearings, cooperating stops on said locking pin and base plate, the relation being such that said stops will prevent withdrawal of said locking pin from its bearing in the lower bearing projection when said locking pin is in operative position and will permit such withdrawal when said pin is turned axially but will prevent disengagement of said locking pin from its upper bearing except through the opening in the base plate, and a hasp lug` on said base plate provided with an opening to receive the lower end of the locking pin, substantially as described.
7. A locking member for a car door fastener comprising' a base plate, a hollow housing on the front side thereof, a locking pin, said housing being provided in its ends was@ with bearings for said locking pin and said base plate being provided with an opening moved from its bearings, a hasp lug on said base plate provided with an opening adapted to receive the lower end of said locking pin, a stop flange on one side of said locking pin Contact of which with said hasp lug defines the locking position of said locking pin and a stop shoulder on said housing which cooperates with the flange on said locking pin to prevent withdrawal of said locking pin from its bearing in the lower end of said housing when in opera tive position and will permit disengagement of said locking pin with its bearing in the lower end of said housing when said lock ing pin is turned axially but will prevent withdrawal of said locking pin from its bearing in the upper end of said housing by contact with a rigid part of said housing, substantially as described.
