To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, FREDERICK lfliorraao SIMMS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 6 Charles street, Berkeley Square, London, England, have invented'new and useful lmprovements in Magneto-Electric Machines for Combined Ignition and illumination Purposes, of which the'following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in magneto-electric machines for generating ignition and illuminating current for use, for example, on motor road vehicles. v
hlagneto-electric machines of the type above referred to are known wherein two arniatures are employed which rotate between two pairs of pole-pieces, one oi the said armatures being designed for generat in}; the current for igniting the explosive charge of an internal combustion engine, and the other for generating current designed for supplying the head and other lamps of motor road vehicles.
Now, the object of my present invention is to provide means whereby the leakage of magnetic flux from one pair of polepieces is prevented, so that it does not atfeet the magnetic field of the other pairor" pole-pieces, and also, in some cases, to provide means whereby the distribution of the magnetic flux can be adjusted, so that the total flux generated is properly divided between the two magnetic fields.
As hitherto generally constructed magnets-and pole-pieces of the kind above referred to have comprised three adjacent magnets, the central inagnet being longer than the outside magnets and carrying polepieces for the ignition armature, and. the
equivalent being located preferably irif inediately above the upper endof said lower pole-pieces Which are thereby magnetlcall or le s isolated from the polepieces. final adjustment as regards'the distribution of the magnetic liar: can be made after eachmachine is complete.
In some cases the adjustment may be effeoted by cutting away recesses in the polepieces or shoe adjacent to the lower ends ofthe two outside magnets and also cutting a recess between the upper and lower poleshoes, so as to leave only narrow strips ad- 3aoent to each side of the inner or longer magnet. Or, in. cases 111 which the longer inner magnet is not used and the outer magnets are brought slightly lower'down the adjustment of the distribution of the flux may be effected by saw-cuts providedin the horizontal plane between the two tum nels in which the armatures rotate.
To enable any invention to be fully understood I will describe it by reference to the accompanying drawing; in which Figure 1 is a side view of magneto magnets and pole-pieces constructed according to the invention.
