Description

A. MOL. NIGOLSON.
AUDION. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 6, 1914.
ALEXANDER MuIlEAlll` NICOLSON, 0F TRRYTOWN, N YORK, ASSIGNOR TO WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
AUDION.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MOLEAN NrcoLsoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Tarrytown, in the county of 'Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Audions, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to thermionic repeaters such as audions and of the highcurrent output type, and its object is to increase the eciency of such repeaters.
One of the factors determining the eHiciency of audions is the strength of the electric eld between the input electrode and the filament. It has been discovered that by providing an inputelectrode having a large surface, and by placing the filament in close relation to such surface, an extremely strong electric ield is produced, resulting in correspondingly increased eliiciency. By winding the filament about the input electrode,
said input electrode offers the minimum obstruction between the filament and the plate,
and this further increases this type of audion.
The present invention, therefore, contemplates an audion provided withan input electrode having a large surface. Such input electrode, for example, may be in the form of a plate, and the filament may be the efliciency of wound about said plate and maintained out of electrical Contact therewith by a suitable dielectric.
The invention may be more readily under- I stood by reference to the drawing, showing in perspective an audion embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the input electrode is shown as consisting of a plate 1.
The filament 2 is wound about such plate and is maintained in proper position thereon by notches 3 in the edge of the plate, which notches receive the' filament. In this structure the filament lies against both surfaces of the plate 1, and theplate 1 may be covered with a dielectric coating at the points of contact of the filament therewith. The output electrode is shown in two parallel plates 4, t, lying upon opposite sides of the Speclcation of ltetter Patent.

- plate 1 and parallel therewith. The plates 4, 4 are brought in close relation with the plate 1, such position of the parts having been found to be conducive to a high-current output in the audion.
In the structure above described it will be noted that the input electrode andthe output electrode each has a large surface and that said surfaces are in parallel relation to each other. This, it has been discovered, is
conducive to an efficient high-current output. As usual, the lament, the input electrod`e and the output electrode are inclosed in an evacuated bulb 5, the leading-in wires to said elements being sealed in the bulb.
What is claimed is:
l. An audion provided with an input electrode having a large surface, and a filament wound about said input electrode.
2. An audion provided with an input electrode and an output electrode, each having a large surface, said surfaces being parallel to each other, and a filament extending about said input electrode.
3. An audion having its input electrode in theform of a plate and having its filament wound about said input electrode.
4. An audion having an input electrode 1n the form of a plate, a filament wound about said plate, and an output electrode in the form of a pair of plates parallel to said input electrode plate and upon opposite sides' thereof.
5. A thermionic repeater having its mput and output electrodes in the form of parallel plates, and having a heated cathode interposed 'between said plates and in close `proximity to said input plate.
6. A thermionic repeater having its input electrode in the form of a plate, its output electrode in the form of two plates parallel to said input plate yupon opposite sides thereof, and a heated cathode on each side of said input plate and in close proximity thereto.
In witness whereof, Ihereunto subscribe lmy name this 3 day of June, A. D. 1914.
