' DQMENICO T. CASALE, 03E WILLIAMSPDRT, YENNSYLVANIA.
N T-Loon.
To all whom it may concern. a
Be it known that I, DoMENIco T. GAsALn, a subject ofthe jKi'ng of Italy, residing at Willizimsport, in the county of Lyco n'ing and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N ut-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. i
This invention relates to certain improvements in nut locks and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character wherein are employed superimposed reversely threaded nuts; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means coacting with the superimposed nuts whereby the same are effectively maintained against relative movement.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved nut lock whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler. less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of. a bolt having applied thereto a nut lock constructed in accordance with .an embodiment of myinvention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating in detail certain features of the invention; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through one of the nuts herein embodied; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view, detached, of the locking key herein employed. I
As disclosed in the accompanying draw ings, B denotes a bolt of conventional form having its free extremity provided with the reversely threaded portions 1 and 2 with which are adapted to coact the burs ornuts 3 and 4, respectively, for a purpose and in a manner which is believed to be self-evident.
Each of the side faces of the nut or bur 3 is provided, at substantially its center with a socket 5, the side walls whereof being concaved, as indicated'at 6, and in communlca- ,Specification of Letters Patent.
posed transversely of and entirely across the 1 side face.
Patented Mar. 2, 11915.
Application filed November 18,1914. Serial No. 872,785.
When in operative position, the slots or completely fill the socket 5 and thus effectively anchor an extremity of the key 10 to the nut or bur 3. The key 10 has slidably mounted thereon a second clench or head 12 adapted to be inserted within an alined socket 8 in the nut or bur 4 and adapted to be suitably expanded in order to eifectively tie or connect the burs or nuts 3 and 4, in a manner which is believed to be self-evident, and whereby said nuts or burs are eflectively locked against relative movement.
In practice, the nut or bur 4 is adapted to be suitably adjusted in order to assure the requisite alinement of the sockets 5 and 8 and when suchadjustment results in a separation of the nuts or burs 3 and 4, a washer 14 is adapted to be positioned within such space in order that the requisite co-action may be had between the nuts or burs 3 and 4, it being readily observed that the initial purpose of the nut or bur 4 is to hold the nut or bur 3 againstretrograde or outward movement relative to the bolt B. It will alsobe readily apparent that by having the head or clench 12 slidably mounted upon the key 10, the requisite application of the key may be effected with convenience and facility, irrespective of any possible separation of the nuts or burs 3 and 4.
From the foregoing description, it is adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With Which it may be assembled, and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
In combination With a bolt provided With reversely directed threads, a nut engageable With each threaded portion of the bolt, said nuts having sockets in their side faces adapted to aline, a key, and expansible heads carried by said key adapted to be inserted Within the alined sockets of the nuts, the side Walls of said nuts being concaved, said nuts being also provided in their side faces with open-ended slots in communication With the sockets and adapted to aline and through Which the key is adapted to extend.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the )resence of two Witnesses. D MENICO T. CASALE. Witnesses:
