Description

D. E. ROBINSON.
ELECTRIC. SWITCH. APPLIUATIONIILE'D JAJLZl, 1914.
123 51 23, Patented. Feb. 23,1915.
' WMMM V 7 22 5W H W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DELBERT E. RbBINSON, OF ENID, OKLAHOMA.
ELECTRIC SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedFebJ23, 1915.
Application filed January 21, 1914. Serial No. 813,481.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELBERT E. ROBINSON,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Enid, in the county of Gar.-
field and State of Oklahoma, have invented and switch blades having the inner longitudinal edges thereof formed with laterally projecting flanges. fitted into such guides whereby the blades may be moved back and forth within the guides, contacts being disposed at the opposite ends of the guides and in the path of movement of the blades.
It is also my purpose to provide a sliding switch which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efiiciency and durability and one which may be manufactured and installed at a minimum expense. Furthermore, I aim. to provide a switch of the class described wherein the contacts and blades will be inclosed so that the dangers incident to sparking or arcing will be eliminated and wherein the blades may be manipulated with ease and convenience and without uncovering the contacts of the switch.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope'of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan view of an electric circuit controlling switch constructed inaccordance with my present invention, the top of the casing being removed. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the switch. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of one of the blades of the switch. Fig. 4 is-a top plan view of the switch, the top of the easing being in position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a substantially rectangular casing or receptacle preferably composed of insulating material and lined with asbestos 2 and equipped with a cover 3 of glass or other transparent material. One side wall of the casing 1 is formed with a longitu dinal slot 4, while uprising from the bottom wall of the casing and terminating adjacent to the slot 4 is a pivot post 5.
Suitably fastened upon the bottom wall of the casing longitudinally thereof and spaced apart in parallelism are guides 3', 3 having the confronting edges thereof formed with longitudinal slots 4:, 4. The blades-of the switch are designated at 5 and, in the present instance, are three in numher and the outer blades have formed on the lower longitudinal edges thereof out wardly extending flanges 6 fitted into the grooves 1 in the confronting edges of the guides 3. A cross piece 7 of insulating material is arrangedacross the upper edges of the blades and is seated within arecess formed in the upper edge of the central of the outer blades 5', suitable means being employed to effect a connection between the central blade and the cross piece. By means of this cross piece 7 it will be seen that the blades are held spaced apart in parallelism and in proper relative position. Extending upwardly from the bottom of the casing and suitably fastened thereto are contacts 8 disposed at the opposite ends of the guides and in the path of movement of the switch blades 5', while the contact engaging extremities of' the blades are formed to provide tongues 9 adapted to enter the contacts so as to produce a good electrical contact between the parts.
In order that the blades of the switch may be moved back and forth to effect the various circuit connections, I employ a manually operable lever 10 fulcrumed between its ends upon the upper end of the pivot post 5 and having the inner end thereof formed with a slot 11 receiving a roller 12 carried by a pin projecting upwardly from the cross piece 7 and the outer end thereof project- .ing through the slot 4 and equipped with a knob 13 whereby the lever 10 may be swung about the pivot post to slide the blades of the switch.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. It will be seen that when the blades 5 are shifted into engagement with one set of contacts, such blades will disengage the other set of contacts thereby making one circuit and breaking the other.
I claim:
A sliding switch comprising a base, guides upon said base and spaced apart in parallelism and having the confronting edges thereof formed with longitudinal grooves, switch blades having the innerslot formed in one side wall thereof, a lever fulcrumed within' said casing and having the inner end thereof connected with said blades through a pin and, slot connection and the remaining end extending outwardly of the casing by way of the slot therein whereby the blades of the switch may be moved into and out of engagement with the various sets of contacts.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DELBERT E. ROBINSON.
Witnesses:
