Description

WIND SHIELD.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY 29, 1913.

.an extent as to endanger THOMAS R. MINTUBN, JR., OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA.
WIND-SHIELD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. MINTURN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wind-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to the class of vehicle protectors generally known as windshields and which are primarily designed for automobiles andv kindred machines.
The invention provides a protector em bodying a fixed section and movable sectransparent section 1 lies against the front -.side of the fixed section tions, the latter being preferably pivoted and arranged when in operative position to form an extension of the fixed section.
It frequently happens that operators of automobiles are annoyed by insects and other objects floating in the air, such objects besides causing annoyance frequently resulting in impairing the eyesight to such occupants of the machine.
The invention provides a protector embodying a screen section and a transparent section, the latter being brought into operative position when it is desired to prevent the air or dampness from striking the face and the screen section being brought into operative position when it is required to obtain plenty of air but prevent insects or other objects floating in the air from striking the face and impairing the vision by lodging in the eyes.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a front view of a wind shield or protector having the screen section in operative position; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 0 Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view indicating both the screen and transparent sectlons occupying a position so as to be out of the way; and Fig. 4 is a detail view showmg more clearly the means for holding the sections in operative position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following descriptlon, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
The numeral 3 designates the fixed section Specification of Letters Patent.

of the protector or wind shield and 1 and 2 represent the movable or pivoted sections. The section 2 is the screen section, whereas the section 1 is the transparent section and comprises a plate of glass or other like material such as commonly employed in the construction of protectors for automobiles. The sections 1 and 2 have such relative arrangement that one only may occupy an operative position, whereas the other section lies against the fixed section so as to be out of the way. When the section 2 is uppermost or in operative position, the
3 and when the transparent section 1 is uppermost or in 0perative position, the screen section 2 lies against the rear side of the fixedsection.
The sections 1 and 2 are pivotally connected to the top of the fixed section 3, thereby admitting of both of such sections folding against opposite sides of the section 3, as indicated in Fig. 7 whereby the several sections may be entirely out of the way. The side bars of the frame forming a part of the fixed section 3 are enlarged at their upper ends and the sections 1 and 2 are pivotally connected to extensions thereof. Each of the sections 1 and 2 is provided at its sides with latch bolts 4, which are adapted to enter openings formed in the enlargements of the side bars of the section 3 so as to hold the sections 1 and 2 in the required position against possible movement. This construction admits of either one of the sections being turned into operative position or folded against opposite sides of the section 3 so as to be out of the way.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device. which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood'that the device shown is merely illustrative, and
made when deguideways to receive interchangeable sections, which are adapted to be slipped into the guideways from above. One of the sections is shown in position and is indicated at 1 and is provided with a screen for the purpose stated. When the screen section is to be replaced by a glass section the former is slipped from the extensions of the frame and the transparent section is placed in position.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
A device of the class described, a fixed section, a plurality of movable sections, and means for positively securing the movable sections in the desired position, said means including upstanding portions formed on the upper portion of the fixed section and having its upper and lowerlongitudinal edges formed with notches, and a sliding r locking bolt carried by each movable section and adapted to engage the notch in the upper longitudinal edge when one of such movable sections is in active position, and said bolts adapted to engage the notches in the lower longitudinal edge when said movable sections are in inactive position and for locking the sections against movement.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
