PACKAGE FOR TABLE-CUTLERY.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. VVrLLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement in Packages for Table-Cutlery; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in package for table cutlery, and particle larly for table knives having silver handles. In the usual method of packing these articles they are placed in so called rolls which consist of strips of flannel or other suitable material provided with pockets into which the knives are inserted, the strip being then rolled and tied. To pack knives this way is inconvenient and the package thus provided is also inconvenient for the user.

The object of this invention is to provide a package in the form of a box having a separate compartment for each knife, so that the handles will be held out of contact with each other and the blades extend into a chamber through which air may be circulated so that the blades will not be affected. by moisture; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

In carrying out my invention, I form a rectangular box 2 of suitable size and length and provide it with a cover 3. Within the outer end of the box I locate a positioning frame 4L which is divided by partitions 5 to form a series of compartments 6 corresponding in number to the number of knives to be contained in the package. The walls of this positioning frame are lined with flannel 7 or other suitable material, and it may be mentioned in passing that the width of the openings in the positioning frame correspond to the thickness of the handles 8 to Specification of Letters Patent.

be employed or to the size of the bolsters 9 so that the knives will have a firm bearing in the partitions. The blades 10, project into the box beyond the positioning frame and so that they stand in a comparatively large space, and if desired the inner end of the box may be provided with one or more perforations 11 to insure the admission of sufficient air to keep the blades dry. Within the cover 3 a strip of flannel or other suitable material 12 may be folded providing a cloth with which the knives may be wiped, and when folded and placed in the cover this cloth provides a pad to bear against the outer ends of the handles and so hold the knives in position and prevent shucking.

"With a package of the character shown and described, the knives are readily dropped into the several compartments and by inverting the box they may be dis charged. The bolsters of the knives having bearing against the partitions, keep the blades from striking one another, so that the knives are isolated and the possibility of scratching is avoided. This form of package is much more convenient both in shipping and in providing a convenient receptacle in which the knives may be kept by the user.

I claim:

1. A package for silver knives having plated blades, comprising a box of the length of the knives and made up of separable box sections, partitions in one end of the box of a length substantially equal to the length of the knife handles and thereby providing in the other end of the box a relatively large air chamber substantially equal to the length of the knife blades, a lining of relatively soft flannel-like material covering the separating partitions and adjoining walls of the box, the said lined partitions and walls forming elongated cells slightly larger in cross section than the knife handles to thereby support the knives with the handles separated from each other and protected from mechanical injury and with the blades in spaced relation, out of contact with each other in the air chamber, and the box further having an air passage whereby to provide free circulation of air about the separately supported knife blades for evaporating and carrying ofl' adhering or contained moisture on or about the knife blades.

2. A package for silver knives having plated bladescomprising a box body open at one end and a removable cover at said open end, partitions in the open end of the box body extending down into the body of the box a distance substantially equal to the length of the knife handles and thereby providing in the closed end of the box a relatively large air chamber of a length substantially equal to the length of the knife blades, a lining of relatively soft flannel-like material covering the inner walls of the open end of the body and the separating partitions, the said lined walls and partitions forming elongated cells slightly larger in cross section than the knife handles to thereby support the knives with the handles separated from each other and protected from mechanical injury and the blades in spaced relation and out ofcontact with each other in the air chamber, and said box body having air passages in the bottom portion thereof opening into the air chamber whereby to provide free circulation of air about the separately supported knife blades forv evaporating and carrying off adhering or contained moisture on or about, the knife blades.

3. A knife package comprising a box, of

the length of the knives to be contained therein and made in separable sections, partitions in one end of the box of a length corresponding to that of the knife handles and thereby providing a common air chamber in the other end of the box, a lining of soft flannel-like material covering the partitions and the adjoining walls of the box, the said lined partitions and walls forming elongated cells corresponding in cross sectional area to the cross sectional dimensions of the knife handles and opening into the common air chamber aforesaid, and knives in the box having their handles engaged in the elongated lined cells and their blades extending into the common air chamber, whereby the handles are separated and protected from mechanical injury and the blades are snpported out of contact in space free for the evaporation and dissipation of moisture.
