To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY LANDsIr-JDEL, a citizen of thc United States, residing at the city of Poplar Blufi, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Tnbulating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to the tabulating mechanism of recording machines, and its object is to provide tabulating devices in connection with the laterally movable paper carriage of a recording machine, said devices comprising a rod or shaft upon which are mounted a number of revoluble and lot orally movable tabulating stops, in combination with an'abutmcnt adapted to be engage-d bv said stops to limit lateral movement of the paper.
An obiect ot the invention is to provide a tabulating mechanism comprising a support preferably in the form of a rod or shaft, a series of laterally movable stops revolubly supported upon said rod or shaft, and means holding said stops in various selected adiustments, in combination with an abutment adapted to engage with said stops to limit movement of the paper carriage transve"sely o the machine.

Another object is to equip the paper carriage of a recording machine, and the de- I vices for holding and controlling the paper carriage, with a clutch device settable to hold the carriagein any adiustment in which it may be placed independently of the devices for holding and controlling the paper carriage, and manipulative means for setting said clutch device incidentally to re lease of the holding and controlling devices With the foregoing and other objects to be attained, al l. of which will be apparent from the following detailed description, I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a comb ned side elevation and sectional view of a Dalton adding and recording machine illustrating my invention in combination with the laterally movable paper carriage of said. machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the paper carriage retained in one adjustment by one of the tabulating stops, the paper table being mo ed forward to permit access to the tabulat ng stops, so that said stops mav be adiusted in ditl'erent operative positions. In the embodiment illustrated the paper carriage includes the side lates 1 permanently connected by a number of suitable connecting rods, and by a bracket-shaped supporting member 2. The supporting member 2 is at the rear of the carriage and extends above and below the carriage supporting rail The anti-friction devices 4 are mounted between the bracket 2 and the supporting: rail 3. The platen A and the paper feed rolls 5 are supported in the carria e in front of the carriage rail.
paper table 5 is pivoted to the side plates 1 of the carriage as indicated at 7, and the paper passing from the paper table 6 is guided to the platen and the feed rolls 5 by a suitable guide plate 8. A rod 9 is supported by the rear extremities of the side plates 1, and is provided with a flat or plain surface 10 upon its upper side. The paper guides which cooperate with the paper table are mounted upon the rod 9, and are laterally mo able thereon to various adjustments intermediate of the sides of the carriage, so that said guides can be adjusted to accommodate sheets of paper of various widths. Each paper guide includes a bracket 11 comprising two arms rcvolubly supported upon the rod 9. Each of the arms is provided with openings of a size capable of receiving the rod 9, and a slot 12 wide enough to permit passage of the narrower part of the rod 9. Thus, after the brackets have been passed on to the rod 9 said brackets cannot be removed except by turning them beyond the position indicated in Fig. so that the line of shorte t diameter of said rod 9 is perpendicular to the walls of the slot 12, will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. Each bracket supports a pressure spring 13, (Fig. l) arranged to engage with the Hat surface 10 of the rod 9, and thereby yield ingly hold the respective brackets and paper guides in proper adjustment. Said rod or shaft 16 threaded, preferably through its length. and supports a series of polygonal nuts or tabulator stops 11. Since the tabulator stops 1? are screwed upon the rod or shaft 10 it is obvious that they may be placed or set'in any desired adj ustment with respect to each other and with respect to the paper carriage or the column spaces upon the paper being fed into the machine. Each tabulating stop nut provided with a hub 18 extending toward the left With respect to the operator facing the machine, and each hub is provided with a flange 19 the outer side of which is beveled, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. The paper table 6 is arranged to engage with the front edges of the tabulator stop nut-r17, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, and thereby prevent accidental turning of said stop nuts, so that said. nuts will be firmly retained in any adjustment in which they may be placed. When it is desired to vary the adjustment of the tabulator stops it is only necessary to raise the paper guides to release the paper table, and swing the paper table forwardly away from the stops as illustrated in Fig. 2, permitting convenient access to all of the tabulator stops. After the tabulator stops have been adjusted the paper table is returned to its position against the front edges of said stops, and the paper guides are again engaged upon the paper table. Thus, the paper table is supported by the tabulator stops, and also constitutes a lock to prevent accidental movement of said stops while the machine is in use.
An abutment member 520 is pivotally mounted upon a support 21 attached to the framing of the machine, preferably approximately midway of the sides of the machine, and is provided with an upwardly extending projection 2;! a daptt-d to engage with the stop nuts 17 to top movement of the paper carriage in tabulating operation. The rear end of the abutment member 20 is provided with a projection 23, and a spring 2i encirclcs said projection and presses upon the rear end of the abutment member 20, thereby actuating the projection toward the rod or shaft lt' and into the path of move incnt of the tabulating stop nuts 17.
An arm 25 :is pivoted upon the rod or shaft 16 near one side of the paper carriage (Figs. 2 and 3:), and a cooperating arm :26 (Fig. l) is pivoted upon said rod or shaft near the opprsite side of said paper carriage. The arm :55 is extended to provide a hand lever 27, whereby said arm may be manipulated. The arms 25 and 26 are connected by a rod 28 which extends across the paper carriage above and in front of an ob lique portion 29 on the abutment 13v depressing the lever 27 the riid :28 is forced downwardly and rear'vardly against the edge 29 of the abutment member 20, and thereby depresses the front end of said abutment member in opposition to the tension of the spring 24. Thus. the abutment member 20 may be manipulated out of engagement with the tabulating tops 17, and the carriage may then be moved laterally a slight distance, and the lever 27 may then be released. As
30 soon as the lever 2 is released the spring 24 sets to move the abutment member 20 and the projection 22 in osition to engage the next one of the tabuating stops. v
From the foregoing it will be understood that by depressing the lever 27 to release the tabulating abutment in the manner shown in Fig. 3, the operator is enabled to move the paper carriage easily and without re-. straint. The paper carriage may be actuated by any suitable or well known motor device (not shown) so that, immediately upon release of the lever 27 the paper carriage will be moved laterally until stopped by engagement of the next tabulating stop 17 with the tabulating abutment 22.
On some occasions it is desirable to stop and hold the paper carriage independently of the tabulating stops. My present invention includes means settable at the will of the operator to hold the paper carriage independently of the tabulating stops and independently of any escapement mechanism which may be utilized. It will be understood, therefore, that my present invention is adapted for use in connection with paper carriages controlled by escapcment mechanisms, or in connection with paper carriages which are not provided with escapement or motor devices. I have not illustrated the escapement devicesfor the reason that they do not affect or modify the operation of my present invention. In the embodiment illustrated the devices for holding the/paper carriage. independently of the tabulating stops or any escapement mechanism are settable by the tabulating release lever 27.
The tabulating release lever 27 is rovided with an arcuate slot 30 which receives a pin 31 on one of the side members 1. The pin 31 constitutes an abutment to limit movement of the lever 27, so that said lever 27 cannot rise above the position shown in Fig. 2. ,The tabulating abutment 22 is released by depression of the lever 27 substan tially one half the length of the slot 30. Further depression of the lever 27 seats the rod 28 within a seat 32 formed in the abut ment member 20 adjacent to the abutment projection 22. When the rod 28 is seated within the seat 32 the abutment member will be latched down by said rod 28, and said rod 28 will be retained in such position,, so that the spring 24 cannot return the abutment member into engagement with the tabulating stops. Thus, the abutment 22 may be latched permanently out of engagement with the tabulating stops and, when the parts are so adjusted, the lever 27 sets the clutch to hold the paper carriage independ ently of the tabulating stops and independently of any escapement mechanism.
A link 33 is movable vertically through a guide formed in the bracket member 2, and
' on its upper side is provided with a pro jection 34 extending into a slot 35 in the lever 27. Operation of the lever 27 to re-' lease the tabulatin abutment moves the link 33 vertically, an when the lever 27 is latched in its lowest adjustment-that is, when the rod 28 is seated within the seat 32--the link 33 sets the clutch to hold the paper carriage. The bracket member 2 which constitutes a part of the paper car riage supports a bifurcated member 36 the two arms of which extend between the upper and lower parts of the carriage supporting rail 3, as'illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. The upper arm of the bifurcated member is provided with a projection 37, and the lower arm is provided with a projection 38. The projections 37 and 38 are normal] out of contact with the adjacent surface of the carriage supporting rail 3, so that the carriage may move without restraint by the clutch. The bracket member 2 also supports a bar 39, provided with longitudinal slots 40 through which the supporting screw studs 41 pass.
The inner end of the bar 39 is formed with a pointed projection 42 extending between lateral projections 43 on the ends of the arms of the bifurcated member 36, the end of the bar 39 adjacent to the projection 42 is wedgeshaped, so that when the bar 39 is actuated inwardlv the wedge-shaped portion thereof enters the notches 45 formed in the projections 43 on the ends of the arms of the bifurcated member 36 and press said arms apart. Thus, the clutch members 37 and 38 may be engaged against the upper and lower parts of the carriage supporting rail 3, thereby frictionally holding the carriage independently of the tabulating stops and independently of any escapment mechanism. The outer end of the bar 39 extends alongside of the link 33 and is provided with a stud 46 upon which a roller 47 is mounted.
The roller 47 is adjacent to the inner edge of the link 33. A cam 48 is formed on the link 33 above the roller 47. The cam 48 is provided with a broad shoulder 49 at its lower end and with a surface 50 which slopes gradually upwardly and inwardly of the cam with respect to the link 33. When the lever 27 is depressed only for the purpose of releasing the tabulatin abutment, that is to V the position shown in ig. 3, the shoulder 49 enga ing the roller 47 actuates the bar 39 inwardly, thereby spreading the arms of the bifurcated member 36 and engaging the clutch portions 3738 with slight pressure against the upper and lower parts of the carriage supporting rail 3. This slight frictional engagement permits movement of the paper 'arriage by its actuating devices, (not shown), but prevents sudden and forceable movement of the paper carriage. When the lever 27 is released the link 33 is raised thereby, thus releasing the bar 39 and permitting retraction of the spring-arms of the member 36, thereby actuating the bar 39 outwardly. When the lever 27 is depressed its full movement, that when the rod 28 is seated in the seat 32, the bar 39 is held between the projections 43, thereby firmly gripping the clutch members 37 and. 38 with the upper and lower parts of the carriage supporting rail 3. Thus, the carriage will be retained in its desired adjustment independently of the tabulating stops, and independently of any escapement mechanism. b'o, also, the clutch for holding the carriage is set and is retained in its gripping adjustment by the lever which releases the tabulating abut ment, and as an incident to the operation of said lever 27 to release the tabulating abutment. And, conversely, the lever which sets the clutch to hold the carriage also releases the tabulating abutment as an incident to the setting of the clutch.
\Vhile I have illustrated my invention combined with an adding and listing machine it is apparent that its use is not restricted to any specific type of machine. Ob viously, the invention is capable of extensive use in connection with various types of recording machines, and 'nirticularly in such machines when it is necessary or desirable to tabulate or record accurately in conformity with prearranged columns formed on the paper. 'lhus, the machine an be arranged for column space work, and to record accurately in conformity with vertical space lines in any position on the paper, whether said space lines occur intermediate of the normal letter space positions or otherwise. The tabulating stops can be adjusted with precise accuracy and the cooperative relation ship of the carriage and recording mechanism with respect to the rulings upon the paper can be varied as desired, and within any limits whether extended or minute.
I do not restrict my invention to use in any specific embodiment. Neither do 1 restrict myself to the precise form and ar rangcment illustrated and described, for it is obvious that there may be various modifications within equivalent limits without departure from the spirit and scope of the in vention.
\Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a recording machine. the combination with a laterallv movable paper carriage, a support mounted in said carriage, a series of revoluble stops mounted on said support, means for moving said stops late ally when said stops are rotated on said support, a plate arranged to engage with and hold all of said stops in their 'various adjustments on said support, a releasable member for holding said plate in engagement with said stops and a spring actuating said member.
2. In a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, a support mounted in said carriage, a series of revoluble stops adjustable to different lateral positions while in engagement with said support, means for moving said stops laterally when said stops are rotated on said support, a plate arranged to engage with all of said stops in all of their various adjustments, a releasable member holding said plate in engagement with said stops, a spring actuating said member, and an abutment arranged to engage with said stops to limit movement of said carriage.
3. In a recording machine, the combination of a laterally movable paper carriage, a threaded rod mounted in said carriage, a series of stops screwed on said rod and adjustable in various positions thereon, a plate supported independently of said rod for holding said stops in whatever adjustment they may be placed, a releasable member holding said plate in engagement with said stops. means for holding said member out of engagement with said plate, and an abutment arranged to engage with said stops respectively to hold said carriage.
4. In a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, a threaded rod mounted in said carriage and a series of laterally movable stops on said rod, of a device supported independently of said rod and engaging said stops eil'ectivclv to hold said stops in their various :uljustincnts, a releasable member holding said device in engagement with said stops, a spring actuating'said member into engagement with said device, and an abutment for engaging said stops to hold said carriage.
7. In a recording machine. the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, of a rod mounted in said carriagie, a series of revoluble stops mounted on said rod and adjustablc to various selected positions thereon. an element supported independently of said rod for holding said stops in their different adjustn'ients, and an abutment arranged to engage with said stops respectiut-lv. of a device mounted in said carriage for releasing said abutment from said stops.
6. in a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage. a rod mounted in said carriage. a series of revolublc stops mounted on said rod, and a device supported independently of said rod for preventing said stops from revolving. of an abutment arranged to engage with said stops. res ieetively, and a latch device for holding said abutment out of engagement with said stops.
7. In a recording machine. the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, a rod mounted in said carriage, and a series 'of revoluble stops mounted on said rod. of
an element in said carriage holding all of said stops in whatever ad ustment they may gage with said stops,

8. In a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, a rod in said carriage, a series of stops mounted on said rod, and an abutment movable into and out of position to engage with said stops, of a lever mounted in said carriage, a device controlled by said lever for out of position to engage said stops, and means for latching said device in position to hold said abutment out of position to engage said stops.
9. In a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, a rod mounted in said carriage, a series of stops mounted on said rod, a devic in said carriage for holding said stops from movement on said rod, and an abutment movable into and out of osition to engage with said stops, and a spring actuating said abutment into position to engage with said stops, of a lever mounted in said carriage, a device actuated by said lever for moving said abutment out of position to engage with said Stops, and means for latching said device in position to hold said abutment out of position to engage said stops.
10. In a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, a support mounted in said carriage, a series of stops mounted on said support, and an abutment arranged to engage with said stops to hold said carriage, of a plate mounted in said CfiI'I'lilgQ,'{\ device for holding said plate in engagement with said stops to prevent said stops from moving with respect to said support, and a spring for holding said device in engagement with said plate.

In a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, a rod mounted in said carriage, and stops adiustable on said rod, of a plate pivoted in said carriage and arranged to engage with said stops, and a device movable into and out of engagement with said plate to hold said plate in engagement with said stops, or "to release said plate.
12. In a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, and a paperv table mounted in said carriage, of a series of tabulating stops engaged by said table, a member releasably engaging said paper table for holding said table in engagement with said stops to prevent said stops from becoming displaced,
and a spring actuating said member.
13. In a recording machine. the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, a series of tabulating stops mounted in said carriage, and an abutment arranged to engage with said stops to hold said carriage in various positions, "of a plate mow ably mounted in saidcarriage and arranged to engage with said stops to prevent said stops from becoming displaced, and a releasable member actuating said plate into engagement with said stops.
14. In a recording machine, the combina tion with a laterally movable paper carriage, a support in said carriage, a series of stops mounted on and movable laterally with respect to said support, and a device in said carriage engagingwith said stops effectively to preventrsaid stops from becoming displaced, of an abutment supported by the framing of the machine and arranged to engage with said stops, and a latch device supported by said carriage for holding said abutment out of position to engage said stops, substantially as described.
15. In a recording machine, the combination With'a laterally movable paper carriage, and a series of stops mounted in said carriage, of an abutment supported by the framing of the machine and arranged to engage with said stops to hold said carriage in different adjustments, and means mounted in and moving with the carriage for disengaging said abutment from said stops.

In a recording-machine, the combination with a lateral y movable paper carrings and stops mounted in said carriage, of an abutment supported by the framing of the machine, a spring actuating said abutment in position to engage said stops, .a lever supported by the carriage, and means controlledby said lever for moving and holding said abutment out of engagement with said stops.
19. In a recordin machine, the combination with a laterafiy movable paper carriage, a series of tabulatingi stops mounted in said carriage and means in said carriage for holding saidstops from movement, of an abutment supported by the framing of the machine, means for actuating said abutment toward position to engage with said stops, and a beveled flange on each stop arranged to rub against said abutment before engagement of the stop with said abutment in lateral movement of the carriage, to reduce the speed of movement of the carriage.
20. In a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper car'- riage, a rod mounted in said carriage, stops movable laterallv on said rod. and means a I n 1n the carriage for holding said stops from displacement, of an abutment arranged to engage with said stops, respectively, to hold said carriage in various lateral adjustments, and means in connection with said stops for engaging said abutment in lateral movements of the carriage to reduce the speed of movement of the carriage.
21. In a recording machine. the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, a rod mounted in said carriage, stops movable laterally on said rod, and a plate in said carriage movable into and out of engagement with said stops to hold said stops from displacement, of an abutment arranged to engage with said stops, respectively, to hold said carriage in various lateral adjustments, means for disengaging said abutment from said stops to enable said carriage to move laterally, and means in connection with each stop arranged to cooperate with said abutment to reduce the speed of movement of said carriage before any stop becomes engaged with said abutment.
22. In a recording machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, stops supported in said carriage and an abutment arranged to engage with said stops, respectively, to hold said carriage in various lateral adjustments, of means in connection with each stop arranged to cooperate With said abutment to reduce the speed of movement of said carriage.
23. In a recording'machine, the combination with a laterally movable paper carriage, stops for holding the carriage in different lateral positions and an abutment arranged to engage with said stops, respectively, to hold said carriage in said positions, of means in connection with each stop arranged to cooperate with said abutment to reduce the speed of movement of said carriage and a device for holding said abutment out of position to cotiperate with said means and said stops.

28.
