VULCANIZER-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb, ltfi, 1915,
Application filed July 21', 1914. Serial No. 852,298.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER AnAMsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vulcanizer-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in vulcanizing presses of the type disclosed in Letters Patent No. 988,295, granted to me April 4, 1911, and more particularly to the construction of the base of the cylinder thereof, whereby there will be provided two bearings or stutting boxes for the ram thereof, and whereby access may be had to the fastening bolts of said stufling boxes and the other parts without requiring the workman to enter the cylinder.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a vertical central sectional View of my improved vulcanizer, the upper portion of the cylinder and its cover being omitted.
In the said drawing the reference numoral 1 denotes the mold receiving cylinder of this type of vulcanizer, suitably closed at its open upper end by any desired form of top, which top acts also as an abutment for the ram 2, as in my Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to. The construction and operation of this ram 2 and its cylinder 3 being the same as in said Letters Patent, further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
The base of the cylinder body comprises an outwardly flaring wall t terminating in an annular flange 5 to the exterior of which the lower edge of the cylinder 1 is riveted, while at its lower contracted end said wall 4 is formed into the horizontal flange 6 apertured to receive the ram cylinder 3, as shown, the upper end of the latter being flanged at 7 to rest on said flange 6, and being provided with a packing gland 8, all as in my Letters Patent hereinbetore referred to. Formed integral with said base and disposed just below the flange 5 is a horizontal partition 9 having a central aperture therein of a diameter sutficient to permit the free passage therethrough ot' the flange 7 of the ram cylinder. To said partition is removably bolted a ring 10 of an interior diameter to fit the ram 2, and to the underside of said ring is removably bolted a packing gland 11. said base is provided 011 opposite sides with the large apertures 12, whereby ready access may be had to the nuts of the bolts fastening the packing glands 8 and 11, as well as those of the ring 10, whereby the packing of the stufling boxes may be replenished at any time, or the ram 2 and its cylinder 3 withdrawn, the latter being accomplished by removing the nuts fastening the ring 10 in position, so that it may be removed first.
It will be observed that the partition 9,
its ring 10 and the stutling box thereof act as a perfect closure for the bottom of the cylinder 1, while the same, together with the lower stufiing box, provide a two-point bearing for the ram 2, thus minimizing the danger of any binding action during its operation. At the same time the parts are accessible readily through the apertures 12 for repair or separation, and without the necessity for entering the cylinder 8.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a vulcanizer press of the character described, a base for the same comprising a main wall to which the lower end of the vulcanizer cylinder is fixed, and which forms at its lower end a support for a ram cylinder, a centrally apertured horizontal partition integral with said wall, and a removable ring disposed in and partly filling the aperture in said partition and forming one element of a stuiling box for the ram.
2. In a vulcanizer press of the character described, a base for the same comprising a main wall to which the lower end of the vulcanizer cylinder is fixed, and which forms at its lower end a support for a ram cylinder, a centrally apertured horizontal partition integral with said wall, and a re movable ring disposed in and partly filling the aperture in said partition and "forming one element of a stuffing box for the ram, said main wall being apertured to permit access to the interior of said base between said partition and the supporting point of the ram cylinder.
3. In a vulcanizer press of the character described, a base for the same comprising an upper vertical annular flange, a lower horizontal flange, an intermediate outwardly flaring wall connecting said flanges, a centrally apertured horizontal partition,
The flaring wall 1 of and a removable ring disposed in and partly filling the aperture in said partition and forming one element of a stufling box for a ram.
i. In a vulcanizer press of the character described, a base for the same comprising an upper vertical annular flange, a lower horizontal flange, an intermediate out- Wardly flaring wall connecting said flanges, a centrally apertured horizontal partition, and a removable ring disposed in and partly filling the aperture in said partition and forming one element of a stuffing box for a ram, said outwardly flaring wall being apertured to permit access to the interior of said base between said partition and the supporting point of the ram cylinder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
