RATCHET SCREW-CUTTER.
riaavee.
Application le July 12, 19.12.
To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW P. JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ord, in the county of Valley, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Ratchet Screw-(hitters, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of .the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. g
This invention has special reference to screw cutting devices and more particularly to a screw cutting stock for operating the thread cutting dies for forming screw threads on screws, bolts and the like.
The invention further consists in the provision of a novel form of ratchet mechanism for imparting rotation to the threading dies and novel means by which .the direction of rotation imparted to the die may be reversed. u
With the above and other ob]ects in view, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more. fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved screw cutting device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line l-l of Fig. 1.
As illustrated, my improved ratchet or screw cutting device embodies a handle 10, preferably of cylindrical form, the same being formed at one end with a head 11 provided with a central circular opening 12 to form a ring or collet for receiving a thread cutting die 13. This die 13 is provided with a central tapered and threaded cutting bore 14 of the usual type but is also provided with a plurality of radial or peripheral notches 15 and teeth or projections 16. r1`he die is retained in position by a permanently attached cover plate 17 having a s iniilar opening corresponding with the opening. 12 but of less diameter to provide a projecting flange portion 19 for retaining the die between the plate 17 and a detachable cover plate 18 secured to the opposite side of the head by means of screws or the like 20. The head 11 is provided at its opposite edges with recesses 21 which communicate Specification ofIzetters Patent.

Serial No. 708,991.
with the opening in the head at their forward ends while their rear ends extend into an enlarged cylindrical portion 22 provided with a central transverse opening at the ends of the recesses as shown at 23 to receive a coiled spring 24 therein. A pair of pawls 25 are mounted on pins 26 extending through the inner portion of the head of the stock and also forming attaching means for the permanent cover plate 17 and it will be observed that the free ends of the pawls are tapered to operate with the openings communicating with the notches of the die and are held in engagement therewith by means of the spring. In order to hold one of the pawls in engagement and with the die and the other pawl disengaged and thus permit reversed operation of the device, a sleeve or ferrule 27 is also mounted on the enlarged cylindrical portion of the handle and said sleeve is limited in its rotation on said portion by an outstanding pin 28 carried by the cylindrical portion and engaging a slot 29 in the sleeve disposed radially with respect thereto. 1t will also be observed that the ends of the pawls engaged by the ferrule are beveled as disclosed in the drawings and adjacent to the transversely apertured cylindrical portion of the handle, the inner face of the sleeve is provided with a pair of oppositely beveled recesses 30 and 21 respectively, tlie same being spaced apart and tapered in opposite directions to the surrounding inner face of the sleeve for engaging the inner ends of the pawls and serving to move the same into and out of engagement with the notches of the die, according to the direction of rotation desired to be imparted thereto. Thus, when the handle is turned in one direction, the tapered end of one side will engage in the notches of the die and cause rotation of the latter member therewith for threading a bolt or the like but permit movement of the handle in the opposite direction, when the pawl will ride overI the teeth to cause rotation of the die so that reciprocation of the handle will permit the device to be used in many places where a rotatable tool could not be used.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very etlicient and simple form of stock and ratchet mechanism for thread cutting devices, especi al attention being called to the reversing a die held in said opening, a toothed die mechanism for the ratchet device which permits the convenient use of the device for operating the die in opposite directions.
What is claimed is:
The combination of a handle having an enlarged head at one end provided with a cylindrical opening of uniform diameter and extending entirely therethrough, said head further having pawl receiving slots intermediate its faces, a septum separating said slots and having its forward face widened and concaved to form a part of the cylindrical opening whereby the walls of said opening, including the widened forward face of the septum, will form a bearing for mounted in said opening to [it closely therein, cover plates attached to the head to hold said die in position and a pair of oppositely disposed pawls pivoted intermediate their ends to the plates, and having the tail portions thereof extending alongside the septum and separated thereby, and means engaging with the tail ends of the pawls for causing the latter to selectively engage the die.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
