To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GILMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Car Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trucks for railway cars, particularly trucks of the six whee type used on passenger cars.
The principal objects of the invention are to do away with the use of elliptical springs, ordinarily employed in'ear trucks and with them the side bearing arches, truck bolsters and spring planks, thereby providing a less obstructed space under the truck frame for the brake rigging which may, in consequence, be simplified in itsconstruction and more easily repaired when necessary; to provide oertoinnrra-ngements of the springs whereby the car body will be more efiiciently cushioned on its running gear; to provide a truck which will be simpler in its construction, stronger and more durable than the trucks now in vuse; and furthermore, to
provide -41 construction for a railway car truck whichmvhile (i'uite different in its general organization from the trucks of standard type zmdian improvement thereon in the several respects above noted, accomplishes said improvements by means of certain parts anddev-ices which can be readily substituted forcorrespondingparts and devices in trucks of standard makes so that old equipment may be reconstructed to obtain the benefits of the invention with a minimum expenditure for ilaborond *materialf Regarded more specifically, the invention provides =inia railway car truck a cushioned or elastic center hearing arranged preferably above the truck frame on which the bolster is sustained and which takes the place of the usual structure made up of the side bearing arches, truck bolsters, spring planks and elliptical springs, these being entirelv done away with in the truck of my in ention.

The gradual increase in weight of passenger cars which has been going on forsome time, has reached such a point that the spring arrangements in the trucks ofstanda-rd type ,nre not capable of absorbing the shocks to vJ-hich they are subjected, particularly when the cars carry a heavy load. Theremedy which has been tried is to inerea and sti fi en the springs but with the result that the springs are wltogethertoo stifi when-the cars carry light loads.

A truck frame of common construction may also be employed, a frame of this type being shown in detail in Fig. 6 and consisting of side members or outerwheel pieces Q4. end pieces 35, transoms 36 and inside wheel pieces 37 all suitably joined together to form a rigid structure; Supported upon and rigidly connected with the truck frame is a center bearing support 38 (which may be cast integral with the truck frame if a cast steel frame be employed) formed. with a central opening 39 and di agonal legs 40 extending preferably to the side. members 34 and transoms 36. If the supporting member be made separate from the truck frame. the legs 40 are bolted to theside members 31 and transoms 36, so as to reinforce said truck frame and keep the same from getting out of square.
The center hearing. which carries the entire load of. the car and in my truck takes the place of the side bearing arches, truck bolsters. spring planks and elliptical springs of the standard types of six wheel trucks, consists of an upper telescoping member 41 to which the truck center plate 27 is securcrb(obviou ly these parts might be made integral v a lower telescoping member 42 and a plurality of coiled springs 43 interposed between the upper and lower telescoping members. the lower member being sustained from the supporting member it? by means of hangers ll connected to the supporting member -l0 by pivot pins 45 carried in bearings 46 on the supporting member -10 and similar pivot pins 16 which extend through bearings -17 on the lower telescoping member 42. The king pin 48 extends through the bearing plates 26, .27. and preferably also through the telescoping members 41. 42, as shown in Fig. 10. The load on the center bearing is trans mitted through springs 13 and the supporting member 4-D directly to the truck frame. It is transmitted from the truck frame to the axles of the truck by means of the equalizer bars 31 through springs interposed between the eqnalizer bars and the side men bcrs 34 of the frame. Instead of having one spring between each equalizer bar and the truck frame I preferably employ three springs. The central or master spring 49 is stiffer and heavier than the springs 50. 51 on either side of it, and comes into play only with a heavy load or when a considerable shock has to be resisted. The springs 49 and 50 are preferably the same length. the spring 51 being somewhat longer so that it is put under compression before the others. The springs bear at one end on a seating block 52 carried by the equalizer bar and on the other end against a seating block 53 secured to the under side of the corresponding side frame member 34. \Vith a medium load any normal shock is absorbed by the springs 43 of the center bearing and by spring 51 between the frame and the equalizer. With an overload or an abnormal shock springs 49 are compressed.
The truck is preferably provided with elastic side bearings interposed between the ends of the body bolster and the side members of the truck frame, one of thesebearings being shown in detail in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. 54 designates a bearing member bolted to the end of the body bolster, 55 an upper telescoping member on which the bearing member 54 rests, 56 a lower telescoping member secured to the side member 34 of the truck frame and 57 springs interposed between the telescoping ' iembers 55, 56.
It will be seen that in the truck as above described the spaces below the truck frame and between the wheels are practically free of obstructions. whereas in the standard types of six wheel car trucks these spaces are largely filled by the truck bolsters, spring planks and elliptical springs. all of which parts are eliminated in my truck. As a result the brake rigging may be mate riallv simplified and, moreorer. a workman making repairs underneath the car has a great deal more room to Work in. Furthermore, by providing a center bearing having a plurality of springs, and by employing a plurality of springs between each equalizer bar and the truck frame, the breaking of a single spring does not disable the car. Furthermore, these arrangements permit, in effect, two spring systems, one which opcrates when the car is carrying a light or medium load and when the shocks to be absorbed are not violent, and another which comes into play with an overload or with an abnormal shock.
While I have described my invention in certain preferred embodiments, modified,

'I claim:
1. In a railway car truck, the combination with a truck frame and a center bearing plate, of a supporting structure having diagonal legs sustained by said truck frame and means carried thereon providing an elastic support for said center bearing plate.
2. In a railway car truck, the combination with a truck frame and a center bearing plate, of a supporting structure having diagonal legs sustained by said truck frame and means carried thereon providing an elastic swinging support for said center bearing plate.
3. In a railway car truck, the combination with a truck frame and a center bearing plate, of a supporting structure sustained on said truck frame and having a central opening telescoping members in said opening, one of which carries the center bearing plate and the other of which is hung from said supporting structure, and springs interposed between said telescoping members.
4. In a railway car truck, the combination with a truck frame and a center bearing plate, of telescoping members, one of which carries the center bearing plate, hangers providing a sweeping support for the other telescoping member, and springs interposed between said telescoping members.
5. In a railway car truck, the combination with a truck frame, of a center bearing support having diagonal legs with the truck frame, and an elastic center bearing sustained on said support.
6. In a railway car truck. the combination with a truck frame, of a center bearing support having diagonal legs with the truck frame, an r-lastic center bearing, and hang ers for sustaining the same on saidsupport.
7. In a railway car truck, the combination with a truck frame, of a center bearing support having diagonal legs with the truck frame, and an elastic center bearing sustained on said support comprising telescoping members and springs interposed between the same.
8. In a railway car truck, the combination with a truck frame, of a center bearin support rigidly connected with the truck rame, an elastic center bearing comprising telescoping members and sprlngs interposed between the same, and hangers for sustaining said center bearing on said support.
9. In a railway car, the combination with a body bolster, its center plate, the truck frame and truck center plate, of telescoping members, hangers sustaining one of said telescoping members on the'truck frame, the other carrying said truck center plate, and springs interposed between said telescoping members.
10. In a railway car, the combination with a body bolster, its center plate. the truck frame and truck center plate, of telescoping members, hangers sustaining one of said telescoping members on the truck frame, the other carryin' said truck center plate, springs interpose between said telescoping members, and a king pin extending through the center plates and telescoping members.
11. In a railway car, the combination with a truck frame, a body bolster and a center bearing for the same, of an elastic oscillating center bearing support provided with legs extendin diagonally with respect to the truck frame nd rigid therewith.
12. In a railway car, the combination with a truck frame and a body bolster, of a center bearing for the body bolster comprising telescoping members and springs interposed betwen the same, and a center bearing support provided with legs extending diagonally with respect to the truck frame and rigid therewith.
13. In a railway car, the combination with a truck frame and body bolster, of a center bearing for the body bolster comprising telescoping members and springs interposed between the same, a center caring support formed with legs extending diagonally with respect to the truck frame and rigid therewith, and hangers sustaining said .center bearing on said support.
