a citizen of they United States, residing at `Detroit, in the countyaof Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vehicle-Wheels, of'vvhich the following is a specification.
ll/ly invention relatesto new and useful improvements in vehicle wheels and has for one of its objects to provide an extremely useful and durable wheel for farm wagons, motor trucks and other heavy vehicles which consists of a plurality of wooden segments that are secured in a novel manner to provide a wheel, said segments being cut lengthwise of the grain to prevent shrinkage an cracking.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a wheel of the character described that. consists of a plurality of wooden segments -secured together in a novel man-v ner, each of said segments being grooved upon its outer face so that when the seg- 'inents are httedy together a continuous circumferential groove is lprovidedand forms double tread, portions. Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral l designates a cysegments 5. 'llhese segments 5 are formed of some suitable hard wood cut lengthwise ofY the grain and preferably chemically treated. Each of the segments 5 is provided centrally of its end edges and upon its outer end with a groove 6, which when the segments are fitted together form a continuous circumferential groove and divide the segments into doubleV tread portions Z and 8. lhe outer surfaces of the segments are curved slightly so as to provide a comparatively even tread surface.

The outerA edge of the ring 14 is spaced from the outer tread surface of the wheel the same distance as is the periphery of the plate 2.
The inner ends of the segments 5 are curved and slightly inclined as at 18 to conform to the shape .of the hub 1.
In order to have the outer faces of the segments represent spokesI cut the outer face of cach segment inwardly toward the smaller end from the inner edge of the recess 1l, then chamfer the edges of the cut end portion as at 19 for a distance equal 'to vmore than halt of the cut end portion. rThis arrangement provides a slightly projecting portion 2() which presents the appearance of a spoke.
Mounted upon the outer end of the hub 'l is a circular plate 21 that is apertured centrally to receive the hubl and extends at right angles thereto. The plate rests against theinner unchamfered portions Q2 of the segments as shown in Fig. 2 and is provided adjacent its periphery with counter-bored openings Q8 arranged circumferentially of the plate in slightly spaced relation to each other. At points opposite the openings 23 I provide similar openings 24 in the plate 2. The bolts Q5 similar to the ones 15 are inserted through the openings Q4, the segments A5 have their unheaded and threaded terminals disposed within the openings Q3 and have nuts 26 turned thereon. A suitable huo cap 2T is turned upon the outer end of the hub 18. The bolts 15 and 25 are arranged adjacent the inner and outer ends of the segments and in extending through the segments and being secured provide rigidity and strength 'for the wall so that possibility of accidental derangement or' the segments is eliminated.
Asshown in Figs. and 5 l provide an anti-skid attachment for my improved wheel which consists of an annular ring 28 which is approximately L-shaped in cross section and upon its periphery is provided with a vplurality ol" spaced and preferably pointed projections 29 which are designed to grip the road surface and prevents skidding.
To enable the securing of the attachment,
I provide a plurality of inwardly extending securing plates 30 that are provided with apertured inner ends 31 and are approximately L-shaped to conform to the shape of the ring 28. The plates 30 are secured by `suitable fasteningmeans 32 at spaced points upon the ring 28 and are so arranged that the bolts 15 may he utilized to secure the attachment. The ring 28 is to be secured upon the outer face ot' the Wheel so that the projections 29 extend their full length beyond the tread surface of the wheel as shown in Fig. 2. I provide a plurality of radially supporting arms 32 that are secured at their ends to the ring 28 and an inner ring 33. The inner ring 33 is designed to fit upon the hub cap 27 as shown in Fig. 2 in the drawings.
It will be readily seen that the anti-skidding may be easily and readily secured to the wheel and will positively prevent skidding.
lV ith reference to the foregoing description and accompanying drawings it will be noted that l have provided an extremely useful and durable wheel which will be of great service in connection with heavy farm vehicles and motor trucks Jfor reason of its rigidity, durability, eliicieney and cheapness.
In practice, I have found that the form ofmy invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is'the most etlieient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details rit-construction, proportion and arrangement ot parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any ot the advantages of my invention, as set Jforth.
What is claimed is 1. A wheel comprising a hub, a plurality ol` segments secured upon the hub and having grooves in their outer faces, an annular band mounted within said grooves. said band extending outwardly from said adjacent face of the wheel, a plate carried by the hub and engaging upon the inner faces ot the segments, an annular band mounted upon the outer fares ol the segments and engaging upon its inner edge the normally projecting portion of the first annular band and bolts inserted through the last named annular.l
