A The sliding block is given its longitudinal movement by a sprocket chain ,2T running over sprocket wheels QS-and 29 inthe forwardand-rear portions, respectively, ofthe body. The large hand wheel 30 within convenient reach Aof the operator, whenv he `stands in the forward portion of the machine, is rigidly connected with the sprocket wheel 28and provides convenient means for causing the sliding block to move longitudinally and thereby to produce an outward or inwardmovemnt of `the scraping bars, as may be desired.
The forward ends of the scraping bars are supported by transyersely movable bars 31 'and -32 which are carried` in 'a guideway 52, 'preferably-. of channel form mounted upon the forward endof the.body. The movable bars 31 and 32 are provided with pulleys 37 -at their outer ends over each of which a cable 34 is placed and which passes' around another pulley l38 attached to' the scraper. 'ffhis cable is attached at its end to the 'transverse bar'at 39. A hand wheel 35 mounted upon -the forward portion of" the macnine provides a means forwinding up'the cable and raising the scraper bar.
i The rear portions ofthe scraper bars are raised oy a cable 40, which rriay be' wound around a 'drum'41 by the hand wheel 42.
The` cable 4Q passes around the pulley 43` mounted upon the rear portion of the body and aroundl a pulley A44 attached to the transverse link 85, which is pivotally attahed at its ends to the Scrapers.
IThe vScrapers are propelled forwardly by Ineansof the chains-46 and 48, which are at` tached at 4 7 and 49, respectively, to the body ih janie members 50 and 51. The chains 46 and 48 are attached at opposite sides of the body and are arranged sotl1at they cross bars 31 and 32 slide.
The inner ends of the transverse bars 31 and 32 are held downwardly in close relation to the guide channel 52 by the roller' 60, which is mounted in the short inverted channel bar 59. This short channel bar is secured to the lower channel bar 52. The upward tendency of the inner ends of the 'supporting bars Stand 32 is caused by the weight of the Scrapers which are suspended to them at their outer ends by the cables 33 and 34.
' These rack bars mesh with a single pinion and can be released therefrom by the foot of the scrapers.
Upon the iiinei faces of the webs of the I-beams, of which the bars 31 and are composed, are secured rack bars 61 and (32.
63 which is secured to a vertical shaft 64 at the .upper end vof which is secured the hand wheel 65. rlhe hand wheel is placed within convenient reach of the operator and by means thereof he can move the bars 31 and 32 outwardly or inwardly, as occasion demands. When the machine is being trans-y ported from place to place without being operated, it is desirable to -move the scrapers into close relation to the body of the machine. The hand wheel 65 permits this to be done and also permits .the said Scrapers to be properly supported at various positions according to the width bf the road that is being leveled. In order to retain the said bars in their adjusted positions, a locking device comprising a notched wheel ('G is provided. This wheel isy secured to the upright shaft 64. The end of the lever G7 is adapted to drop into any one of said notches lever G9 which is connected to the outer end ofsaid lever 67 bya rod 68. The inner portion of the lever 67 is made longer and heavier than the outer end in order that gravity may cause it to drop into position in one of'thenotches when the foot is raised from the lever 69.
The links 19 and 2O are bent downwardly and inwardly at their ends, as shown at 7l) in Fig. 6, to engage the lower rear portions The extreme lower and inner end of each link is provided with an eye through which a bolt or pin 22 is inserted. Said pin passes through an'aperture in the lug 72 above the eye 'and through a corresponding aperture in the anglebar 71 below said bye. The angle bar 71 is at tached to a chan'nel bar A.73 secured tothe back face 'of the curved scraper 71. Both the vchannel bars 73 and 71 extend throughout the greater portion of thc length of the scraper. The scraper 74 may be made of sheet metal in sections aiidsecured Vto the 4channel bar 73 in any suitable manner, preferably by countersunk-screws. y
The'inner portion of each of the links 19 and 20 may be made of a lighterbar of metal, preferably an angle bar, as shown at 75. The outer portion may be forged from a bar of steel into the curved form shown.,
The innermost ends ofthe angle bar portion 75 are provided with eyes 76, 77, which pivotally engage the pin 23 which is rigidlyh secured to the sliding block 2:1. l
The sliding block 24 is attached to the sprocket chain -27 by' means of the recessed washers or blocks 78 and 79 which are iiisei-ted in the aperture of one of the links of the chain. A nut S0 threadijdon the lower end of the pin 23 permits said washers to be wedged into place in said link. The said nut also causes the shouldered portion 23 to be draw-n tightly against theu'pper surface of the sliding block, thereby causing the pin 23 to be rigidly secured in the said block.
The downwardly projecting portions 21' and 24 of the sliding block are fitted to the longitudinal angle bars 25 and 26 upon which said block slides and by which it-.is guided. The clips 81 and S2- are extended Ybelow the lower surface of the said angle bars and prevent the sliding block becoming displaced therefrom.
The hand wheels 35 may beprovided with a locking device corresponding in all respects with the lockingdisk GG and the lever G7 engaging thesame. The hand wheel 42 is provided with a similarglocking device S4 and the hand wheel 30 is provided with a locking device 83. d 4
The rear wheels 8G and 87 are placed rela-A tively close together, while the forward wheels 8S aud S9 are Aplaced relatively far` apart. `-l/Vith this arrangement it will be Anoted that the rear wheels ha 'e a narrowY wheel base corresponding to the close 'rela-y tion of the Scrapers at their rear ends. The widely separated wheels :it the forward end correspond to' the widely separated foi-ward ends of Athe Scrapers, thereby el'liciently supporting them. 1
`In the operation and use of my improved road scraper, the operator takes his position at the forward end `of the machine within easy reach ,of the hand wheels 30, l2, 35 and 65. By means vof the hand wheel 230 `he is enabled to cause the sliding block 24 to move backwardly and forwardly and the Scrapers 15 and 16 to move inwardly or outwardly. In roads of great width the scrapers may be moved to a widely diverging position, as indicated indotted lines in Fig. 1.
When it is ,desined to scrape a narrower road they may be moved inwardly to the position shown in solid'lines, or to'any intermediate position. During the manipulation of the scrapers, as above described, they may be elevated or lowered by the hanii wheels and 3 5, At the same time the' supporting bars 31 and 32 may be moved inwardly or outwardly 'in order that the pendant position of the cables 33 vand tmay'not be too angular4 and 'thereby interfere with the proper operation of the scrapers' v .The curved form of the links/2O permits, the driving force ,to be transmitted to the scrapers in their various positions withoutundue twisting or warpings thereof. The lowermost end of the link's ,may be rounded,
l as shown in dotted lines at .90, and said curved end may bear upon the angle bar 71 to relieve the pressure upon the pin 22. The horizontalportio'ns 'l5 of the links will move freely At the extreme forward' end of the frame tongue or other'c'onnecting means 92 for the attachment of the traction engine or other propelling appliance. While I have described more or less precisely they details of construction, I do not wish to be understoodY as limiting myselfv thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit of-my invention.

means for elevating the forward portions `of said scrapers, said means being movable transversely of said body to accommodate the transverse movements of said forward portions of said scrapers.

In a device of the class described, a body, a pair of wheels relatively wide apart at the forwardportion, of said body, aseoond pair of Wheels relatively close together at the' rearward portion of said body, scrapers located on each side of said body outsideA of said wheels,.said scrapers extending from adjacent the front of said body to a point a considerable distance rearwardly o said longitudinally of said body to swing said scrapers about their pivotal connections to and from said body while said pivotal point remains substantially fixed relatively to said body. f-

In a device of ,the class described, .a body, a scraper carried by said body, means movable longitudinally of said body to positively-adjust the inclination of said scraper with respect to said body, and means movable outwardly of said body in a plane transversely of the longitudinal axis thereof to raise and lower said scraper and support the forward end thereof.
In a device of the class described, a wheeled body, scrapers angularly disposed on oppositesidesof said body and converging rearwardly, means for pivotally connecting` the rear portions of said scrapers, a longitudinally 7sliding' 1 member on said body, links connecting said member with the forward ortions of said scrapers, means for elevatlng the forward portions of said scrapers, said means being movable transversely of.said body-to accommodate the transverse movements of said forward portions ofsaid scrapers, and manually actuportions of said scrapers.
