To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. MARSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines, commonly known as ribbon blocking machines, for winding ribbon and other narrow fabrics and the like on blocks or cores, and it consists in certain improvements whereby such a machine is adapted to be operated either by hand or by power and whereby the replacement of the filled blocks by fresh or empty ones can be expeditiously and conveniently effected, the gripping means for the blocks or cores being constructed in a novel manner calculated to effectively grip and hold the same during the winding or blocking operation and to permit various sizes of blocks or cores to be accommodated.
I have fully illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein,

The frame of the machine is constructed as follows: a a designates two substantially similar uprights having each the substantially circular open portion a crossed by the horizontal part a which is provided with a vertical upwardly open guideway a and also having each the upwardly open reall/I.

portions by the horizontal rods 0 c suitably secured in the uprights a a and passed freely through the upright b, which may have set-screws d for adjustably securing it on said rods so as to vary the distance between upright b and the pair of uprights a a. Feet a on the uprights a a and the bracket 6, secured on the right-hand ends of the rod, may serve as means where by to secure the frame to a table or the like.
In bearing blocks f f, preferably formed of aluminum, is journaled the drive spindle 9, said blocks being arranged in the recesses a of the uprights a a and being held therein by the cap-plates h. Said shaft, carries the driven wheel 2' having a broad periphery, as shown in Fig. 1, the same being arranged between the uprights a 'a. Said shaft also carries the live head or chuck, which is constructed as follows: 9' is a disk having a hub is whereby it is pinned to the spindle g and having a diametrical plate on secured on its left-hand face by the screws n, the same being penetrated by the spindle and provided with slots 0 which bifurcate its ends and register with, though formed narrower than, other slots 79 formed diametrically in the disk. In the slots 79 are arranged to slide the blocks Q to which, by screws 9, are removably attached the ears or lugs 1" of the clips 8 formed arc-shaped so as toeifectually grip the periphery of the block or core to be rotated; in order to accommodate the machine to various diameters of blocks or cores to be rotated in the blocking operation it is only necessary to remove the clips 8 and substitute another pair having arc-shaped portions of different radius. they having grooves 25 to receive the opposite On the studs u pro- 2. Fitted over the left-hand face of the disk and suitably secured thereto is a casing 3 having slots 4 through which the handles of the aforesaid levers project.
In the recess 5 of the upright 21 is arranged a sleeve 5 having an enlarged rectangular portion 5 fitted to said recess and being held therein by the cap plate 6. Into the cap plate is tapped a screw 7 having a handle 8 and penetrating the sleeve so as to impinge against the dead spindle 9 extending through said sleeve. On the left-hand end of the spindle 9 is rotatably arranged the sleeve portion 10 of the dead head or face plate 10 having a leather, rubber or similar acting face portion 10, said sleeve portion 10 being provided with a screw 11 which enters the circumferential groove 12 formed in the dead spindle. The said spindle may carry a handle 13 at its right hand end.
In View of the foregoing it will be apparent that in replacing filled blocks for fresh ones the operator releases the screw 7, shifts the dead spindle to the right and then, by manipulating the handles 20, releases the filled block; upon a fresh one being placed in clamped relation to the clips 8, the dead spindle is returned to its original position and there again secured by the screw 7 Also, that in order to accommodate blocks varying in length the upright Z) is adjusted on the rods 0 0.
In the guideways 0. are arranged to slide vertically the bearing blocks 14:, preferably formed of aluminum. These are held normally depressed by the springs 15, each connecting one of the blocks with the corresponding upright 64 at a point below the block. In the said blocks is journaled, parallel with the spindle g, the drive shaft 16 which projects somewhat to the left. Said shaft carries, between the uprights a a, the drive wheel 17 formed with a broad periphery adapted to impinge against the periphery of the driven wheel '2. Said shaft is provided on its left hand end with a wheel 18 whereby to rotate it either by hand or through the medium of a belt or other power transmitting medium. As the machine is thus designed to be either hand or power driven means is provided whereby the drive wheel may be maintained in constant con tact with the driven wheel, when the machine is hand driven, or moved into and out of contact therewith, when the machine is power driven, at the will of the operator. Thus: secured in place by one of the two bolts 19 which cooperate with the rods 0 0 to maintain the two uprights a a in fixed relation to each other is a bracket 20 substantially U-shaped in plan and having its two extremities bearing fiatwise against the outer sides of the uprights and penetrated by said bolt, its crosswise portion resting against the fronts of the uprights. On said bolt is fulcrumed the lever 21 whose rear T-shaped end carries two posts 22 which bear against the under sides of the bearing blocks 14, its forward end being penetrated by the screw 23 having a nut 24: resting on said lever and provided with an eye 25 which may be connected with a foot treadle 26, by a cord, wire or other flexible connection 27. The screw 23 penetrates a fixed lug 28 projecting from the bracket 20. Thus, when the machine is driven by hand (the immediate stopping of the machine being then directly within the control of the operator), by turning the nut 2a in the direction to depress the forward end of lever 21 the drive wheel may be elevated so as to bring it into constant contact with the driven wheel; when the machine is power driven the starting and stopping are accomplishedthe nut 24: being screwed back so that the springs 15 act to hold the drive wheel depressed more or less out of contact with the driven wheelby operating the foot treadle 26.
It will be observed that the parts involved in the control of the transmission of the power from the drive wheel to the driven wheel are so constructed that they may be applied to the'opposite side of the machine, so that the latter may be operated from either side thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a frame including a pair of uprights, a rotary driven structure journaled in said uprights, means, including a rotary driving structure, for imparting rotary motion to the driven structure, said means being movable in said uprights toward and from the driven structure and being thereby adapted to establish and disestablish driving contact between said structures, a lever device for moving said means toward the driven structure, and means to move the lever device including a screw penetrating said lever device and a fixed part of the frame and having a nut and a head adapted to bear against opposite faces of the lever device and said fixed part of the frame, substantially as described.
