SELF-DUMPING ATTACHMENT FOR SCRAPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
Application filed March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,362.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL SAMUELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at McKenzie, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self- Dumping Attachments for Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in road scrapers and resides in the provision of a novel form of attachment for road scrapers whereby an expeditious dumping of the contents of the scraper may be had.
An important object of my invention is to provide a self-dumping attachment for road scrapers of the scoop type which consists of a pair of. arms pivoted adjacent to the rear of the scraper and adapted to engage the road surface and operate to tilt the scraper so that the dumping thereof will be had.
An important object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the character described which is locked in inoperative position by a novel form of locking means forming a part of my invention.
Another important object of any .invention is to provide a self-dumping attachment for scrapers which when released from locked position will automatically move into operative position in such a way that the arms that are pivoted to the scraper engage the road and operate to dump the scraper upon the forward movement thereof.
A still further important object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment which will operate to dump scrapers and is readily adapted for attachment to scrapers of different characters.
Another important object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the character described which is extremely simple as to construction, reliable and eflicient in operation, capable of being readily assembled and disassembled and .which is cheap to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are ac: complished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
WVith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodimentbf my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my attachment attached to a scraper of the scoop type, Fig. 2 is a top plan view, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal fragmentary sectional view.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a scraper for roads or the like which is in this instance of the scoop type and consists of a bottom wall 2, rear wall 3, and side walls 4. The usual draft rods or bars 4 are connected as at 6 with the side walls 4 of the scraper 1 in the usual manner.
My improved self dumping attachment comprises road engaging bars 7 and 8 that are arranged upon the opposite sides of the scoop 1 adjacent to the side walls 4 thereof. The road engaging arms orbars 7 and 8 have formed integral with their inner ends a horizontal connecting bar 9 that is secured by suitable brackets 10 to the scraper at a point in spaced relation to the rear wall 3 thereof. The forward ends of the arms or bars '7 and 8 are downwardly curved and pointed as at 11 so that their ready engagement with the road is provided.
As a means for preventing the curved pointed end 11 from sinking too far into the road I provide a stop member 12 which is secured intermediate its ends to the inner end of the curved portion 11 as at 13. The stop members 12 in being disposed at right angles at its ends to the bars 7 and 8 limit the movement of the pointed ends 11 of the bars 7 and 8 relative to the road or ground.
Mounted at one end upon a squared portion 14 of the shaft 9 is a preferably rectangular latch plate 15. This latch plate 15 is provided with a longitudinal slot 16 formed therein intermediate its ends. A curved latch bar 17 having a transverse handle portion 18 at its outer end is pivotallysecured at its inner end to a bracket 19 mounted on the outer face of the rear wall 3 of the scraper 1 and extends at right angles to the wall 3 rearwardly therefrom. The latch bar 17 is provided with a lug or projection 20 designed to coijperate with the lower edge of the slot 16 in the plate 15 so that the plate will be held in an approximately vertical latched position. The bar 17 is extended through the slot 16 as clearly shown in Fig. 1 in the drawings. It will be readily seen that when the plate 15 is moved from a vertical position to an outwardly extended position relative to the rear wall 3 of the scraper 1, the road engaging bars or arms will be forced downwardly at their curved pointed ends 11 into engagement with the road.
As a means for automatically forcing the pointed curved ends of the road engaging bars or arms 7 and 8 into operative position upon the releasing of the latch finger bar 17 relative to the latch plate 15, I provide a coil spring 21 that is mounted upon the bar 9 upon opposite sides of the latch plate 15 and operatively connected with the plate 15 and rear wall 3. Thus it will be seen that when the finger bar 17 is released by lifting or kicking upwardly so that the portion 20 is free with relation to the plate 15, outwardly and in so-doing position the portions 11 of the arms 7 and 8 in engagement with the road surface. Upon the forward movement of the scraper, the scraper will ride upon the bars 7 and 8 and tilt so that the dirt and other foreign matter contained within the scraper will be dumped therefrom. The position of the arms 7 and 8, cotiperating parts and scraper 1 is clearly shown in Fig. 2 in the drawings. The bars 12 limit the inward movement of the pointed curved portions 11 and thus insure the perfect operation of the device.
To lock the device in inoperative position such as illustrated in Fig. 1 in the drawings, the arms are moved into horizontal position and the plate 15 forced into cooperation with the latch bar 17 so that the position of the latch bar 17 and plate 15 is that as shown in Fig. 4. I provide a leaf spring 22 that is coiled about the pivot for the latch bar 17 and operatively connected with the bracket 19 and latch bar so as to normally hold the latch bar in down and locked position as shown in Fig. 4; in the drawings. The latch plate 15 and coiiperatmg parts are arranged upon the bar 9 at a point adjacent the left hand side of the scraper 1. The latch plate 15 is provided at its upper end with an enlarged ofl'set portion 23 having square openings through the central portion thereof to fit upon the square portion 14 of the bar 9. To provide for the ready attaching and detaching of the latch plate 15, I provide a Clamping plate 24 secured by bolts 25 or other suitable fastening means upon the outer face of the enlarged offset portion 23. It will be readily seen that the dumping action is automatic, requiring only the releasing of the latching plate 15 and the continued forward movement of the scraper.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
