Description
niet %itta @sind affine MTHIAS JOSEPH HINDEN, 0F DETROIYllII-GHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO ADOLPH FREUND, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 112,808, dated March 21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FQR CUTTING THE ENDS OF CIGARS.
The Schedule referred to h1 these Letters Patent'and making part of the same.
.To whom it may conce/rn:
Beit known that l, MATELAS JOSEPH HINDEN, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Device for Cutting the Ends of Cigars; and I do declarethat the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference. being had to the accom-v pan ying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specih'cation, in which-'- Figure l is a perspective, and
Figure 2 an end elevation of my device.
Like letters indicate like parts in leach figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improved machine for cutting ott' the butt ends of cigars in their manufacture at uniform and desired lengths.
The invention consists in the arrangement of a graduated bed-plate and guide, which latter is adjustable, and hy means of which the desired length of the cigar is uniformly obtained, with a suitable knife and spring, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing- A represents a bed provided with a groove, a, to receive the cigar to be operated upon, for the purpose of preventing it from being broken, and its shape deranged while being cut.
The face of the bed, at one or both sides of this groove or channel, is graduated, as at b, and au adjustable guide, B, made adjustable by the slot c and vsetscrew d enables the operator to secure any desired length and perfect uniformity therein of his cigars.
To the end of this bed A is secured the plate O, provided with a curved and circular slot, c, the bottom of which lshould conform to the shape of the groove or channel in the bed, and bein line therewith. This plate is provided wit-l1 the vertical slotf.
D is a vertical arm, provided at top with a handle,
g, and this arm is secured to the plate C by means of the -screw It, in such a manner as to have a free reciprocating movement.
Near the top of the plate is a loop, t', which, passing around'the arm, assists in securing it to the plate.
N ear the bottom of this arm there is cut through it the horizontal slot k.
E is a knife or cutter, pivoted to the front of the plate at l. This knife or cutter has an outwardlycurved edge, m, and the rear side of the cutter is made concave, in order that, in its use and wear against the face ofthe plate, it will in a measure keep itself sharp, and require less attention than knives of other construction. i
A pin, n, secured to the front end of the knife or cutter engages with the slot in the lower end of the arm.
' F isa helical spring secured to the plate and engaging with the arm, to keep the same raised, as shown in tig. 2, except when the handle is pressed down with the hand. l
In ng. 1 the'knife is shown in operation.
The operation of this labor-saving device is so simple, and can be so readily understood, that a further description thereof is deemed unnecessary in this specification.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secur by Letters Patent, is-
The device herein described, wherein the bed A, adjustable guide B, plate C, arm D, knife E, and spring F are constructed substantially as specified, and arranged to operate as and for the purposes set forth.
y MATHIAS JOSEPH HINDEN.
